Stricker, Van Pelt win CVS Caremark Charity Classic

Published

Once again, 20 of the game’s best golfers got together to play a tournament different from the usual PGA Tour grind for a good cause.

The 15th annual CVS Caremark Charity Classic wrapped up Tuesday afternoon at the Rhode Island Country Club. The Donald Ross-designed course just outside of Barrington, R.I., once again played host to some of the game’s elite players from the PGA, LPGA and Champions tours.

Each golfer was playing for a charity, to which they donated their event earnings. The event was packed with opportunities for these players to earn money for their charity, from closest to the pins, a skins game worth $50,000 and the tournament purse of $1.55 million.

Monday was filled with player-patron interaction, going as far as the crowd talking Bubba Watson into pulling driver on a 364-yard par 4, where he drove the ball into the water that loomed short of the green. The day wrapped up with the team of Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt holding a one-shot lead at 12-under against Rickie Fowler-Bubba Watson, and Bill Haas-Billy Andrade.

As Day 2 of the tournament began, players were graced with a calm and cloudy day, which for the second day in a row gave them near perfect scoring conditions. Stricker and Van Pelt came out of the gates hot, birdieing their first six holes to extend their lead to four shots. And they continued to roll, finishing up the round going 7-under during the last 12 holes to shoot a second-round 58.

That held off a strong charge by Haas and Andrade, who fired 61. Stricker and Van Pelt’s 58 marked just the second number in the 50’s of the tournament going alongside their Monday 59.

Things got started Monday with a skills competition where each player tried their hand at: a bunker shot, 10-foot putt and driving a ball through a target. Before any of the players got started with the tournament, long drive champion and trick shot artist Jamie Sadlowski displayed an array of unique shots.

Although Stricker and Van Pelt will have their names etched onto the trophy, the real winners of this event are the various charities that will benefit from this special tournament.

Some of the biggest names in golf have taken home the title here, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Ben Crenshaw.

GolfWRX has its usual assortment of general galleries, WITBs and special pull-out albums. As always, we’ll continue to update the links below as more photos come in from TPC San Antonio.
