Green Still Leads Deere Classic

Nathan Green leads by one stroke over Tim Clark and two over Jonathon Byrd at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois. Green followed yesterdays 63 with a three under par 68. Not bad for a man who hasn’t played in three weeks and just flew in from Australia on Monday. Clark, suffering from a neck injury for which he took several cortisone shots two weeks ago, didn’t play like he was bothered at all.

On a golf course with cute miniature John Deere equipment tee markers Nathan Green followed up his 63 with a 3 under par 68 to maintain the one shot lead with which he started the day.  He’s at 15 under par ahead of Tim Clark, at 14 under, and Jonathan Byrd at 13 under par.  Green has spent the last three weeks at home in Australia.  "To come here and get over the jet lag and play this well is probably a bit of a surprise," he said.

"I think it gave me a chance to just put golf back into perspective a little bit," he said. "I was taking it a little bit too serious and thought it was all sort of life and death out there. But I tried to come back and tried to get a little bit of the enjoyment back into the game and try to smile a little bit."

Green bogeyed the 11th and 12th holes after four birdies to fall to 14 under and into a tie with Bryd.  He recovered nicely on 13 and 14 with birdie to regain the lead.  On the 17th hole he hit over the green and wound up with another bogey. "In four days of golf, there’s going to be a certain patch where you don’t play well or you’re going to have a couple of bogeys," Green said.

Clark has been suffering from neck pain and had several cortisone shots two weeks ago for the pain.  While still not 100 percent he said "At least now I’m swinging freely, it’s sort of not in the back of my mind whether my neck is going to hurt on every swing."  He is still not certain he’ll go the Carnoustie for the Open Championship even if he qualifies.

Green has never led a tournament after the second and third rounds before so it should be entertaining to see how he handles himself tomorrow during the final round.

Oh, and I sure do like those tee markers.
