Berger emerges from playoff with Charles Schwab Challenge victory
For at least four days, until they tee off at the Sea Pines course for the Heritage Championship, the topic of discussion at Zoom water coolers will focus on the 17th green at Colonial. “Bad location,” some will say. “Poor cut of the hole,” others will lament. In the final 45 minutes of Sunday’s play, we saw Xander Schauffele 360-degree a short putt out of the hole in regulation, followed by Collin Morikawa do a hard lip-out in the playoff. No doubt, something was amiss, but in the end, a winner emerged. Daniel Berger was the only challenger to make three at the last, and he carried his good fortune into extra holes. The victory was his third on tour, and first since rehabilitating from wrist injuries,
Berger opened with rounds of 65-67-67, to join what seemed like every name in the game in the chase to track down Xander Schauffele. The X-Man was in the lead until his 71st-hole spin-out, when he suddenly wasn’t. Schauffele tied for third, one back of the playoff, with three others.
Back to Berger. The Florida man made birdie at three of his first eight holes on day four to jump into the mix. He balanced a bogey at nine with a birdie at 14 to persevere. Still, he never looked like the winner, as Collin Morikawa took over the lead.
Morikawa looked to add a second W to his maiden victory at last summer’s Barracuda Championship. The Californian reached 15-deep at the same time Berger reached 14-under. With a splendid opportunity to end things in regulation, Morikawa’s six-foot birdie putt at the last hit a mark and jumped left.
Back to Berger. Faced with a right-to-left tee shot, the left-to-right player kept his drive in the light right rough, then fashioned a 145-yard shot to 10 feet. He could not know it at the time, but three golfers came to the same green, in similar position, and all three watched as putts dove hard left over the final 18 inches. For that reason, Jason Kokrak, Bryson #BigBangTheory DeChambeau, and Justin Rose fell away from the playoff.
Back to Berger. He and Morikawa marched to the 17th hole, and both reached the green in regulation. Like Schauffele, Morikawa’s approach putt got away from him, leaving three feet for par. You know what happened (it’s in the intro) and voilà, Berger Meister, Meister Berger got himself a plaid jacket.
Next week, another winner will add an ugly sport coat to the back of his closet when the tour continues on Hilton Head Island.

I was going to say the same thing…the writer implies both guys hit the green, but neither did. He even goes so far as to say his approach putt got away from him when he actually hit a great chip to get to that spot.

I don’t know what tournament the writer was watching, but Morikawa didn’t have an approach putt on the playoff hole, he missed the green and had a chip.
I don’t know how exactly you can watch the tournament and forget that while writing about it but come on, do better.
