John Daly denied the use of a cart at this year’s Open Championship; Daly releases statement
John Daly’s request to be allowed to use a cart at next week’s Open Championship was denied over the weekend by the R&A after “careful consideration”.
Daly, who has an ailing right leg, had been granted the request to use a cart earlier this year at the PGA Championship, but will now be forced to walk at Royal Portrush after the R&A released a statement which said in part
“Having considered all of the relevant factors, the Championship Committee has decided to decline his request. The R&A believe that walking the course is an integral part of the Championship and is central to the tradition of links golf which is synonymous with The Open. We must also ensure that, as far as possible, the challenge is the same for all players in the field.”
In response on social media, the 1995 Open Championship winner said
“Quite disappointed they do not see it the same way our PGA of America and PGA Tour sees it. Different continents different laws?? As a proud Open Champion I know what the Open Championship represents and what a special tournament it is. I believe all who have earned the right to compete should be afforded that right to compete and give it their best shot. While I trust the R&A’s decision was made with good intentions, I could not disagree more with their conclusions.”
The 53-year-old also stated how he plans on “giving it a shot” next week despite the possibility that he may “need a total knee replacement” in the future.

Since releasing that statement, Daly has informed his followers on Twitter that he has had surgery in England after suffering a “major infection” in his abdominal area after being bitten by a spider.

Even if his ailment wasn’t self inflicted, which I believe it is, R&A made the right call. If your body no longer allows you to compete fairly, tough luck. Only in golf would something like this even come up for consideration!

Daly is the 1995 Open Champion…not the 1995 Open Championship.

I feel bad for ole JD. My Dr. said I would need to lose 80 lbs before he would consider a knee operation. He seems to think me carrying around a sack of cement 24/7 might be a bit of a strain on the old joints. I’ll lose weight. I thought John was older than that.
