In-hand photos and more info on Titleist’s new 2018 “CNCPT 02” irons

Published

on

Back in September, a photo of Titleist’s new CNCPT irons surfaced in our GolfWRX forums. With little information on the new irons, however, much was left up for speculation.

Now, we have a better look and a bit more information on the new Titleist CNCPT irons, thanks to Instagram user brianoleksa. According to his post, the irons are called “Titleist CNCPT 02” irons, and Oleksa gained “5-6 mph” of ball speed during his fitting with the irons compared to his previous Titleist T-MB (2-5 irons) and Titleist MB (6-PW).

A look down at address — Oleksa’s irons are equipped with Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 130X shafts, with a black ferrule by request:

And here’s a better look at the letter that Titleist sent to Oleksa along with the irons:

As always, our GolfWRX members are going in depth about the irons, trying to uncover any information possible about the irons.

Here’s a taste of what they’re saying, but make sure to check out the full thread to see all of the discussion.

  • wesstlee18: CNC-PT is a play on words, a bit more clever than a vowel-less name. CNC meaning milled…
  • MattyO1984: Seems like people are forgetting that these are a concept iron. How many concept cars would you look at it and instantly think, yeah that looks good I must have them? This is an extended test that Titleist can do with the various concepts. They are not going to release them to the mass market (they sold what 1,500 set of the C16). They’ll use them them to see what works, what doesn’t work, what people are ready for, what people aren’t ready for and then I’d be sure that you will start to see the successful elements beginning to be incorporated into future AP lines.
  • John Golia: Two head styles.  AP2 and Ap3 like.  Cast heads. Lofts similar to AP3. More ball speed. Longer distance. 8 piece set $4000.00. More info to come as I get it. (Subject to change)
  • Farrow: That’s not a badge. The back is all one piece of metal. The area that says “CNCPT” is just a blasted finish instead of high polish. I’m guessing they welded a face plate or something to a forged/CNC’d body.
  • BDoubleG: Was talking with a Titleist rep yesterday. I was lamenting that Titleist hadn’t made real driving iron since the 712U. He told me that I should give these a try, as they are being released in early spring – with a price tag of $800 (Canadian) per head.

We’ll update this post with more information as it becomes available.

See what GolfWRX members are saying about the Titleist CNCPT irons.

Forum Thread of the Day: “European Tour looking into an incident involving Matt Wallace and his caddie from the BMW International Open”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day surrounds an incident involving Matt Wallace and his caddie, Dave McNeilly, which occurred on Sunday at the European Tour’s BMW International Open. After hitting a shot in the water on 18, Wallace appeared irate with his caddie, which incensed many of our members, as well as plenty of social media users.

According to bunkered.co.uk, the European Tour stated in an email to the publication that they are looking into the incident over allegations of abuse.

A limited number of clips of the incident have surfaced online.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • buckeyefl: “Sky Sports analyst Rich Beem: ‘I’m sorry, but I just don’t enjoy watching that. I know you’re intense but get over yourself.’”
  • Steele47: “Just looked at Wallace’s twitter. He congratulates the winner Andrea Pavan and also noteworthy, makes a point to compliment Pavan’s caddie. LOL.”
  • OldTomMorris: “It’s a pattern with Wallace that he goes after his caddy so often like this and golf commentators, analysts even fans have picked up on this. There has to be a base level of respect and decency; it appears that Wallace often falls short of that.”
  • golfgirlrobin: “He’s getting roasted on his own Twitter account. People don’t seem that amused.”

WRX Spotted: Ping Glide 3.0, Glide 3.0 Eye2 wedges

Published

on

Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and in the case of the golf world, we had been hearing rumblings of a new Ping Glide series for a while (since the introduction of the Blueprint irons, at least).

This week, at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, we now have an idea of exactly what’s coming with the beginning of Glide 3.0 wedges tour seeding.

Like a lot of initial releases, we don’t have the full tech breakdown, but I’ll make a few assumptions

  • Material: Based on the popularity of the i210s and the feel they offer golfers (so soft), the new Glide 3.0s are made from the same steel and utilize the same 50-percent softer Elastomer CTP.
  • Hydropearl 3.0? A finish designed to repel water and greatly improve consistency from the rough and wet conditions, its been working on irons and why stop there?
  • COG Shifting: Looking at the cavity, Ping engineers have been playing with a LOT of mass around this head. That is one of the cool things about wedges is, beyond the putter, they are the heaviest heads in the set. More mass equals more COG relocation. It’s noticeable in the comparison below.

Notice the back of the top line

There is a lot more mass higher in the LW vs PW

  • Sole grinds: This is where Ping continues to step up there game in the wedge category. And like previous families of wedges, there appears to be a lot of options in design. We should see some TS options in the bags for players at the Open Championship if it’s dry and firm.

Beyond grind options, we also have totally different head options with a Glide 3.0 Eye2. Let’s be honest, this makes a TON of sense since other companies have been borrowing design traits from the Eye2 for the last couple years for their wedges. Why wouldn’t Ping utilize its own already popular design and update it for modern turf conditions?

We will have to wait and see how close we are to what the tech specs will be but like with most things Ping, the release to tour is usually a tell-tale sign that you should be seeing these in store, on shelves and ready to pre-order very soon.
