J.J. Watt beats his predicted score at Erin Hills by 30 strokes. Hmm…

Published

on

Sandbagger, too humble, or is Erin Hills really just too easy?

J.J. Watt, an All-Pro defensive lineman for the Houston Texans, took to Erin Hills with some buddies on the Monday after the 2017 U.S. Open to try his luck on the track many are calling “too easy.” He’s obviously a great athlete, and is known as a super humble guy, but he predicted a score of 147 and shot a 117! I guess it turned out he doesn’t “suck” as bad as he thinks he does.

Or maybe the course is really just too easy like everyone thinks it is?

  • “If J.J. Watt would have played Oakmont in ’73, he’d have shot thirty strokes higher than his prediction, not thirty strokes lower!”  –Johnny Miller, probably

But as Stephanie Wie pointed out, he may have lost one of these sweet Texan-logo’d golf balls in the process.

  • “See I told you that fescue was unfair… even though I was totally kidding.” — Kevin Na, probably

Watt also took to Instagram to provide a few live updates during the round, which seemed to have been interrupted by a bit of inclement weather.

  • “But what’d he think of the setup, though?” — Adam Scott, probably

Thirty strokes lower than a predicted score obviously raises some sand-bagging concerns, especially with what appears to be a pretty good golf swing, but trying to project an exact score when you’re slotted to shoot way above 100 is no small task. It’s not like he predicted 110 and shot 80 — that’d be more of a red flag.

It’s just nice that in the wake of every media member in existence calling golf dead because “there’s no Tiger Woods replacement,” and “there’s too many first time winners now,” that people are still excited about playing golf.

And people always say you need patience at a U.S. Open venue… how about playing behind a foursome that shoots a combined total of 508? That’s a lot of strokes.

I would have slit my wrists waiting on every tee box. I hope to God they let every group play through while they hid their Easter eggs all over the course.

Why should he do that? Do pro athletes owe “the troops” special favors that you don’t?

Dude can’t play a round of golf without being criticized? The internet is a scary place.

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
