Nike Golf’s new commercials are… well, watch for yourself

Published

on

Nike Golf brought out the big guns — Tiger Woods, “Frank,” Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Michelle Wie — for a new series of 30-second commercial spots. In fear of swaying your opinion on the videos, I’ll let you watch them first.

Okay, now that you’re all caught up, let’s talk.

What’s going on with Nike Golf? After ceasing to produce golf equipment, the company is clearly in a rebranding phase. It’s releasing golf shoes inspired by famous basketball shoes, and is certainly going for a more punk style with its stubby collars and flatbrim snapback hats.

It’s odd because while Nike is going for a new look in attempt to capture what’s assumed to be a younger audience, it seems to be caught somewhere in limbo. The new commercials from Nike seem like an ode to the company’s past — when Tiger Woods was dominating golf and Nike was dominating commercials — but anyone who “gets” the Frank reference or the tone of the commercials is older now, probably with kids and a job. And the older crowd doesn’t strike me as the target demographic for joggers, snapbacks and shiny gold shoes.

Also, the commercials kind of miss the boat on what made the original “Frank” commercials so successful; the Frank commercials were funny. Like laugh out loud funny.

For a refresher, check out some of the old Nike Golf commercials below.

Of course, my sense of humor is my own, and maybe you find the 2017 commercials to be hilarious. In that case, feel free to throw your favorite G-rated insult at me in the comments below. Just know that I stand by my own opinion that the new golf commercials aren’t funny, and they certainly don’t make me want to buy a “golf” shirt with stubs for a collar.

Last thing, why would Day have taken the keys out of the cart in the “longest drive” commercial — has anyone ever taken keys out of a golf cart and brought them to the tee?

Anyways, it’s time to vote.

What do you think of Nike Golf's new commercials?

The commercials miss the mark. You can tell what they’re going for but they just don’t get there. It’s supposed to be dry humor amongst buddies, but the acting and direction is not good. A good director or skilled actor probably would’ve done better. If Harold Ramis or Judd Apatow had directed these, they’d probably be great because they’d be able to get Day, Rory, Wie, and Tiger to put on a good show. Or maybe they wouldn’t… They’re golfers, not actors. All in all it’s B- execution by Nike and the crappiness falls on the directors, writers, and editors most likely. I bet they never make it to mainstream TV. *cringe*

    Almost uncomfortable to watch.

Why not? It’s good to see the top golfers having fun and being themselves outside of a golf tournament. You want them to be relatable, and acting like normal buffoons I think they are. Even Tiger.

Did like the Frank one. The others are ok but, will never compare to the original Frank ones and the old one with David Duval slinging the driver.

Have to agree they are good, and funny . Nothing wrong with a laugh or two on the golf course. The ones thinking that they are not right for golf should get a life and relax. I’ll bet the good looking lady on the car commercial gets their every attention . That’s all it is folks advertising .

    rating the commercials humor…..Meh

It looks bad, Someone at Nike must have just realized how much over paying they are doing for their golf athletes…… and only then realized they are providing nothing in return.

Nike apparel and shoes were down last year to the likes of Adidas, Under Armour, FJ, Oakley and Travis Mathew…..Nikes golf shoes look especially hideous and cheap for 2017

Why over analyze a fun light hearted commercial? You have Nike’s 4 biggest stars (and some of the most popular people in golf) in a foursome together needling each other just like everyone of us does with our buddies in our foursomes. I am pretty sure every generation can relate to that.

These are the worst Nike commercials I’ve seen in a long time (possibly ever) and that goes right in line with their latest apparel line, too. Absolutely horrible.

Why so many shanks? Let’s have some fun with golf. These commercials are fun and lighten the mood, which golf needs.

These are great. I think they are made for early 30’s golfers that are taking off early on a Friday afternoon…nothing wrong with that. And you didn’t NEED to know the old commercials to get the “Frank” reference, it’s screaming at you.

Funny commercials to golfers, but Nike, and other golf companies, need to make the game fun and exciting. These commercials don’t do that…

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
