Tiger’s swing looked sharp, back healthy at Pebble Beach clinic

Published

on

Just one day after withdrawing from the Safeway Classic, Tiger Woods gave a members-only clinic for the Tiger Woods Foundation at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club at Pebble Beach on Tuesday in which he showed off his revamped swing.

A special thanks to Twitter user @stevelutton for capturing the videos, which are worth a listen. In them, Tiger discusses hot topics including the changes to his golf swing and Nike’s decision to exit the golf equipment business.

First of all, do you see a vulnerable golfer in these videos? On the equipment side, social media postings of attendees confirm that Tiger is currently bagging mostly Nike equipment, including a Nike Vapor Fly TW driver, a Nike Vapor Speed fairway wood, Nike VR Pro Blade (3-PW) irons and Nike VR Pro wedges (56 and 60 degrees). GolfWRX Member Pure745 also reported on his Instagram account that Tiger confirmed he will change putters, dropping his Nike Method 001 for the Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS putter that he used to win 13 of his 14 major championships.

You should see my swing on the practice tee. I look like a tour player too! It’s having to call a AAA
tow truck to get me from the range to the first that I’m having trouble with. I’m thinkin’ Eldrick is
having the same isha’s. 1 full day of swing violence on a surgically repaired back is one thing, asking for 4 days from every different lie on a typical tour track is another! And asking a 40 plusser back that has been mangled since the age of 3!! Ehhh…..Eldrick, why don’t cha get with Annika and open
one ‘o dem swing academies and hang up the Nikes. Nice career homie, the game won’t forget cha, and your records will stand the test of time.

Swing looks about 3/4 to me. Nowhere near as long as when he was the top dog, er cat. Haney tweeted that his speed was way off.

Bad backs are a b$$ch. Hard to play two days in a row. I don’t expect much from Tiger, anymore.

He’s said it himself, he doesn’t play unless he’s confident that he has a real chance at winning. The circus show is getting old: “will he play” “is he gonna suck?” “will he make it through a whole tournament?”. If he tee’d it up this weekend, he would probably be asking himself the same questions, and why would he, or anyone else in a similar situation step on the tee-box to just be there, and not feel like they can win? I don’t feel sorry for him, but I also wouldn’t take any joy from his failures.

Tigers problem is between the ears, not the swing

Tiger holds himself to high standards, this isn’t the mid 2000’s when he could come out from a winter break with his B+ game and win tournaments. he has to bring his A+ game, week in and week out just to compete, the tour is so deep now, that anyone in the top 75 can win. if he ain’t at that level yet, why go out to just make a cut and sell tickets?

Tempo is beautiful, probably way enough ss to be fully competitive. I doubt, however, that he would take those swings into a tournament round. There is enough of a glimpse of his long game to surmise that there must be some other area in serious disarray. Pitching-chipping yips? No one will ever know until he puts his whole game on display. BTW, I accurately predicted his irons of choice, whiffed on everything else in his bag.

I definitely think his swing is in good order. It actually is more compact and less stress on the knees than his old one. If anything it’s even more technically correct. Having a swing that looks good is different from one that he can laser at a target though 95% of the time. However for elite golfers you really have to have you complete game together. It’s a level of accuracy and performance that is beyond what the best amateurs can achieve. That’s what he needs to improve when he says it’s vulnerable. Sure it looks good to us or in a couple of videos, but can he perform and score 8 birdies in a round at least once in a tournament? 4 or 5 the rest of the rounds? Those are high requirements in a pro setup course.

Still pulling the handle and blocking everything……back swing is just fine, but from there he is done because of poor instruction over the last 10 years……..his back will not hold up with this motion simple physics, I wrote about this years ago before his back went out the first time.

I would imagine what Tiger may have to “fix” is his “vulnerabilities” which I suspect would be his short shots from around the green. I would like to know if he did any of those during this outing. If he’s striping the ball, his back is great, then we head back to those skulls and chunks everyone saw on tv before his operations.

God Bless You Tiger. With your dad and Ben Hogan you developed an instinctively body safe motion. And then the “new and improved” golf instruction of the past thirty years threw that all away. You climbed on the treadmill of “fitness” in order to simply counteract the ill effects of the “modern” swing ravishing your body. The sad part is the whole generation that followed your lead is now on board with the same downward cycle of beat my body up everyday and then get in the gym and find my chiropractor in order to simply show up the next day. It is over Tiger. If you are blessed enough to walk without pain and enjoy life, JUST DO IT! You can manufacture a swing on the range that works around your career ending injury, it looks pathetic by the way, but you can’t play golf this way. Look in the mirror, own up to your personal reality and accept your humanity. Remember, no one has walked in your moccasins so walk tall. Get busy living or stay busy dying. You don’t owe anybody anything and the Lord obviously has other plans for you.

The dude has 10 more years until Champion’s Tour and you want him to hang it up? I guess you would’ve said that to Hogan after the car accident eh?

Looks as if he maintained his fitness and kept muscle on his frame. Just curious as to how you do that with a severely inured (twice surgically repaired) back…

Really just warmup speed, but he always played better when he wasn’t in crazy-max-out mode on every swing anyway. So were Snead, Hogan, Nicklaus, Jones, and pretty much everybody else. Few people in the current generation seem to know this. Watch what’s happening with their backs and joints by the time they’re late 30s to early 40s.

      Oct 12, 2016 at 1:39 pm

Late 30’s to early 40’s? Look at Jason Day, Justin Rose, Ricky Fowler. They all haven’t reached that age and have had serious back trouble. It’s the swing…not age.

        Oct 12, 2016 at 2:40 pm

Jason Day just withdrew because of back issues and Ricky Fowler has three more years till he is 30. His workout regime caused the issues which made him have to revamp his swing. Overhead squats of 185lbs+ will do that to anyone’s back (saw him at a private gym in Columbus, OH during the 2013 Presidents Cup).

No it won’t, it is doing the PED’s without an HGH factor involved. Muscles and can grow bigger on the PED’s but the ligaments, tendons and bone can’t hold that kind of power without injury. (Tiger is an example) Why don’t golfers then do HGH? Because then it would be to noticable and would get caught.

Blaming back issues on lifting is a farce. Lifting properly provides a strong and healthy back. By far, the best thing you can do for back health. Lifting improperly has the potential to destroy your back beyond repair.

Generosity… He wants to help the tournament out by getting the tiger “bump” because commiting will draw tons of crowd (Cash). But if his game is not ready, hes not going to take the spot of someone else in the field who has a chance or actually worked hard and qualified for it. I guess you can look at it both ways. Dont know which is the real reason (Jerk or generosity) but, either way, if hes not going to be competing for the win, it was the right decision.

I am a long-time golfer and fell into the “Anti Tiger” camp for years; however, I am finding myself rooting for Tiger and I hope he not only makes it back to winning again but wins a few more majors….just don’t break Jack’s record 🙂 I think he getting back to playing (and hopefully winning) will be great for the game.

Back looks healthy and the more time he takes, the healthier it gets. So, now it’s a question of whether he has the “grind” left in him to put in the hours upon hours and hours it takes to get his game razor sharp. See no reason to do that now. Best to wait and focus on the Florida swing and run up to Augusta.

      Oct 12, 2016 at 1:12 pm

He’s 40. How healthy do you think he can get? The body can only take so much. And he can’t get a hold of drugs to help him as he did in the past as there are more eyes on him than ever before and just as many on his advisors and doctors.
I also bet you he hasn’t accepted the fact that he can’t swing as fast or as far as some of the top 10 driving leaders on the PGA Tour, and that is eating him up inside. His ego is so big he preferred to do this hammed up clinic instead of just going out and playing a couple rounds to smile at fans on the course and shooting 80. He saw how good the guys were playing at the Ryder Cup and it shook him up in another tailspin of doubt.

That’s the problem with jerks. They look normal. Then they do irrational things. Enter tournaments, back out of tournaments, then enter then withdraw, then say everything’s fine when it’s not. Tiger, just chill. We will see you on the senior tour. Till then just calm down.

Look, I want Tiger to come back as much as anybody, but to equate some casual clinic to world caliber golf is just ridiculous.

What the mystery is is why would he commit and then pull out so soon? It’s not like he’s going to “fix” whatever he thinks his problem is within a month of committing.

      Oct 12, 2016 at 11:26 pm

I think people were just afraid that it was his back again. These videos show that it’s not (at least he can hit whatever shots he wants without any sign or weakness). It’s pretty clear that it’s other parts of his game that he can’t yet put together for not just competing but winning. Ok I don’t think his game is good enough to even compete right now. It’s likely he would have missed the cut and that’s what he was afraid of and meant by being vulnerable.
