Tour pros vs. the R&A: Hot takes on Twitter

Published

on

The R&A chief Peter Dawson and his cohorts elected to send golfers out Saturday morning of the Open Championship amid gale force winds.

Play lasted 32 minutes before the governing body thought better of the decision, suspending the tournament for more than 10 hours until the winds died down.

The decision was quickly questioned and rued as both Louis Oosthuizen and Brooks Koepka had balls blown off major-tournament-speed greens.

Predictably, the players who were unlucky enough to tee it up during the 32 blustery minutes weren’t happy, and an ad hoc discussion of the cost/benefit of modern green speeds ensued as well (and will surely continue).

Here’s a sampling of the pros’ takes on Twitter from Saturday at the Open.

Not competing this week, darling of the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, Michael Putnam, voiced his disappointment at the stoppage of play from his breakfast table. Sidebar: do Frosted Mini Wheats straddle the line between “kids” and “adult” cereal, or are they firmly in the kids camp?

Screen Shot 2015-07-19 at 1.32.48 PMAnalyst Dottie Pepper, who is on course this week, begged the question many people are asking. Of course, this question begets another: What would slower greens and the existing equipment yield? Surely the hasty demise of the Old Course’s record 62.

Lee Westwood gave voice to players’ sentiments as they twiddled their thumbs, waiting for news from tournament officials regarding the resumption of play. Westwood hit the progress of announcements on the head.
Screen Shot 2015-07-19 at 1.46.15 PMDarren Clarke did Westy one better, screenshotting the update as he received on his phone with faux enthusiasm.
Screen Shot 2015-07-19 at 1.46.31 PMAs mentioned earlier, Westwood knew what was coming with the announcements…
Screen Shot 2015-07-19 at 1.46.39 PMLuke Donald tweeted this “live shot” of R&A officials monitoring the winds on course.
Screen Shot 2015-07-19 at 1.47.38 PMIan Poulter sympathized with the fans who got to see like a collective three hours of golf punctuated by a 10-hour delay Saturday.
Screen Shot 2015-07-19 at 1.47.46 PMMore updates…
Screen Shot 2015-07-19 at 1.47.57 PMFinally, Trevor Immelman (not in the field this week) offered what you can assume is a take representative of pros’ feelings about Saturday at the Open Championship.
