Adam Scott outspoken against golf in the Olympics

Published

on

Aussie Adam Scott is far from keen on the idea of golf’s participation in the Olympics, and isn’t afraid to voice his opinions.

According to a report from Reuters.com, Scott doesn’t think that golf needs to be in the Olympics, and he doesn’t care about winning a medal at the Rio Summer Games in 2016.

“Whether I win an Olympic medal or not is not going to define my career or change whether I’ve fulfilled my career,” Scott told Reuters at the Wells Fargo Championship. “It’s nothing I’ve ever aspired to do and I don’t think I ever will.”

[quote_center]”It’s all about the four majors and I think that’s the way it should stay for golf,” Scott said.[/quote_center]

There’s no lines to read between there — Scott doesn’t think golf should be in the Olympics.

“To go and play an exhibition event down there (in Rio) to meet some athletes [in other sports] in the middle of the major season, I don’t think any other athletes in their sport would do that.”

Does he really think golf in the Olympics is merely an “exhibition?”

“Yes, I do, because I don’t believe a lot of sports belong there,” he told Reuters. “It’s gotten away from where it started.”

So will he play?

[quote_box_center]”I’m not definitely ruling it out, but certainly I’m not planning my schedule around playing the Olympics,” Scott told Reuters. “I’m planning my schedule around playing majors the best I can. If I can fit going to the Olympics into that, it might be a bit of fun, then lucky me if I qualify. But if not, I’m not going to miss it, that’s for sure, and I’ll enjoy watching [the major Olympic sports].”[/quote_box_center]

To clarify, Scott doesn’t think golf should be in the Olympics, but if it fits into his schedule, he might make the trip.

Point made, Scotty.

We have young men risk their lives to defend their country, I don’t understand why some golfers would decline a chance of represent their country playing a game of golf . Maybe afraid of drugs testing, injury, and lastly playing for free

The only golf at The Olympic Games should be amateur with handicaps of plus to scratch

Adam is correct. Though I love the game of golf, it is not a sport it is a game.
    Here are my criteria:
    1. Can you smoke cigars/cigarettes and drink beer/alcohol while doing it?
    Then it’s not a sport, it’s a game.
    2. Can 5 year olds and 95 year olds do it?
    Then it’s not a sport, it’s a game.
#. When real athletes retire from their sport do they still do it?
    Then it’s not a sport, it’s a game.
Golf is not a sport, it’s a game.

#2 and #3 apply to a large variety of sports.

Focus on your game AS and not the politics… if he doesn’t want play, DON’T!

I am glad he will speak his actual opinion about it, and not just say cliche sports answers that are PC
Good for him, and I agree with him completely

As long as we still have Badminton and Table Tennis, the Summer Games will be just fine.

Well said Adam. Golf, like Tennis should not be anywhere near the Olympic Games. In truth the Olympic spirit is dead. You have people who work in a job to keep their sport like canoeing going and in theory Rory will turn up in a private jet. Can’t see some Golf superstars slumming it in the Olympic village.
However……..Golf is an individual sport…so make it no caddies, no pin positions, no yardage books etc. That would be interesting to watch….

Adam Scott must not care about promoting the game of golf to those who haven’t been exposed to how great of a game it is. It’s all the fans that have given him the opportunity to benefit greatly from his success and his talent. If there were not spectators at PGA Tour events and watching on TV, the players would be playing for pennies. The Olympics is a great way to expose golf to so many countries that don’t play it, and many of these countries do have the wealth to get into playing it. He’s already made his millions, but come on Adam, pay it forward to the next generation like Arnie and Jack did!

Totally agree I’ve been opposed to the idea since day one. Ryder cup, presidents cup, for international team competition and world golf championships for individual. Enough.

Olympics should be for amateurs, not professionals imho. It was that way in the past but of course, it’$ about money, people might pay top dollars to see the top ranked athletes in the world but not if they are great unknown amateur athletes.

I agree that golf can do without the Olympics, however there is a history of strange sports ( or percieved sports) being part of the Olympics. In the early 1900’s at the Paris Olympics someone won a gold medal for Architecture…..so why not golf? Go figure.

Of course he is right. Golf is not an Olympic sport. Neither is tennis. Neither are a lot of other sports they’ve included. It’s all a money grab by the IOC. If I were in the shoes of guys like Adam Scott, I would opt.

I don’t even think it should be an amateur event. There is already the World Team Championships every other year.

I would agree with other’s comments – golf is unnecessary at the Olympics. They already have 4 majors plus other important tournaments that bring worldwide attention. And as AS said the Olympics weren’t built around golf either and just don’t seem right being there.

I am glad that Adam spoke out. Golf has four majors, of which the Open Championship and US Open are paramount. Olympic golf is unnecessary.

Maybe Adam is afraid he can’t pass the Olympic drug testing???

The olympics have denigrated into a cash grab for contractors with little regard for the externalities on the local economies.

Olympic golf could be fun to watch, however it would be like judging the best poker player by one level in the WSOP. Someone can run hot for a week and have bragging rights for 4 years?

Couple thatwith the negative side effects from the IOC contractors and a multitude of other issues and you are left with an overblown week of golf that would have been better under the banner of the USGA/R&A, where ethics are vastly more common than the IOC and millions are not wasted to build a new course.

I am sure he will change his opinion if they let him use the broom putter. As long as it fits his agenda he’s all for it.

golf in the olympics isn’t for you scotty !
golf is about as big as it’s ever going to get in Australia

it’s for China where they pump lots of money into any sport in the olympics and value an olympic medal well higher than any golf tournament!

  20. Matt

    May 14, 2015 at 9:10 pm

I completely agree, and doubt it will get much attention.

Just another reason for me to like and respect Adam. The Olympics or the IOC is totally corrupt. Stick to the basic sports in the summer and winter olympics and stop adding stupid crap like NBA pros paying amateurs. Keep golf out of the Olympics.

  22. Golfgirlrobin

    May 14, 2015 at 7:36 pm

I tend to agree with him. Unless you’re going to go with a format other than stroke play, I don’t see the point. Maybe some variation of the NCAA format might be more interesting.

  23. acemandrake

He’s right. Olympics = Cash Grab

  24. J

    May 14, 2015 at 6:09 pm

He makes a good point. Every week is essentially an Olympic event. The worlds best players compete weekly. Maybe Olympic golf should be like boxing where only amateur golfers are permitted to compete. Might help grow the game that way.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
