Lexi Thompson’s shirtless Golf Digest cover

Published

on

LPGA Tour player Lexi Thompson is on the cover of Golf Digest’s May magazine cover, the Fitness & Power Issue, and she’s wearing just a towel, a golf glove and stretchy pants.

Screen Shot 2015-04-02 at 11.52.20 AM

The magazine finally put an LPGA Tour player on the cover, and it seems as though Golf Digest is progressively pushing the limit of how much clothing is acceptable for the cover of a major golf magazine.

Digestphoto

In 2013, Golf Digest put current Fox Sports anchor Holly Sonders on the cover of its fitness issue. Last year, Golf Digest chose Dustin Johnson’s fiance Paulina Gretzky for the cover. This year, it’s No. 9-ranked LPGA Tour player Lexi Thompson.

Some people, like Lexi Thompson, will think it is an empowering image of a strong, physically fit woman golfer.

On the other side of the fence, people will find the cover — with a woman wearing nothing more than a towel — overly suggestive and unnecessary.

And then there’s this guy with a slightly different opinion on the matter.

What do you think of Lexi Thompson's Golf Digest cover?

This cover is ok, the one with paulina gretzky offended me. she’s on the cover because she sleeps with a tour pro that can’t play the short track

All of you men should have given up long ago on trying to understand women, just grin and nod and move on. Lexi looks great though.

    OK guys, I’m confused.

So activists suggest that women being forced to wear tops is discriminatory, and equality means that women should be allowed to go topless. Rallies are held in support of this.

Now, a fit, healthy, empowered women chooses to go tastefully topless for a magazine cover, and its stated as being exploitative and sexist.

If I was a woman, I’d be completely confused. So if I empower myself, and believe that divisions between the sexes are societally created, then I can take off my top, knowing that I am supporting breaking down societally discriminatory practices. However, to do so means I am then accused of being exploited, and allowing my body and image be used to further propagate these stereotypes.

Man, some days it is much easier being a dude.

Let’s face facts… men like the female form. She is a fine specimen of this. Why is this viewed as criminal to enjoy viewing this, and why should Golf Digest be ashamed of catering to the realities of human nature? Grow up people, sex and the related is a part of life, embrace and enjoy it (in this case in the form of a cover of a magazine). I am so sick of this objectification of women angle. Men aren’t saying oh here’s a pretty gal let’s hate and belittle women because we as men enjoy looking at we deem are pretty women. They’re saying, here’s something pleasing on the eye, and it’s on a golf magazine, which I’m also interested in; that’s a great combination. That’s it that’s all.

So because it’s part of life, a women should be judged only by her attributes ? GD is a magazine about golf and this women is knowed as a golfer not a playmate. I would like to hear your opinion about any women of your family who could be judged at work not about her effort but her body instead.

I agree with MHendon no doubt about it! I will also say that many guys hit it long, but the vast majority of guys don’t come close to 263 avg. Not to mention Lexi would more than likely win the mens club championship at their local club.

All of the comments from the article are missing the point. The point is that this article is being written about Golf Digest. That’s why she is shirtless. Is is objectifying women in order to get the magazine more exposure? Absolutely. But that’s how marketing works. For the longest time, “Any press is good press” was the saying. These days it’s not quite as true as pitchforks are longer and sharper than ever. However, something like this does exactly what it was supposed to do.

Yeah, the design team could have done a little better with her hair style. Echoed earlier, she has a dude’ish tone goin’ on. Bigger hair and a photo chopped hour glass waist line would not have hurt.

Actually, two women golfers, Ariya Jutanugarn and Yani Yseng, average over 273 yards per drive. They average longer than the 7 worst men’s drivers on the PGA Tour. Also, Lexi is actually closer to 264.

Golf Digest should be R rated for some of the pictures and articles that they put in to their magazine. I mean I understand sex sells but really its called a golf magazine for a reason. If they want to do a body issue like espn’s , magazine that’s fine but I would rather they talk about golf more than showing some young woman golfer with just a towel covering up her front side just to sell magazines.

Apart from her looking hot, I’m pretty sure it’s not a towel. Looks like a long sleeve shirt of some kind to me. Have a close look at the image if you’re not overly offended. I know I’m not. I was quite happy to study it nice and closely.

The point is that “she” was the one making the decision to be photographed in this manner. I’m sorry that this doesn’t agree to your 1920’s perception of what a strong and fit female athlete should look like, but she does appear to be quite confident in the photo. And by the way, it’s a fitness issue, so it has nothing to do with people playing golf topless.

    Apr 2, 2015 at 4:43 pm

Because I am a regular reader of GolfWRX, my question is not what is underneath Lexi’s towel, but rather what the specs are on her driver. Head model, loft, hosel adjustment, shaft model, weight, tipping, overall length, swing weight, hot melt…

    • Chuck

      Apr 3, 2015 at 2:40 pm

So to answer my own question…

She plays an interesting mix of shafts per her 2014 GolfWRX WITB. She had a bag full of Cobras (Is she still with Cobra? What is Cobra doing now with its tour pros?) and had Project X 5.0’s in her irons and a Fujikura SIX X-flex in her driver. I’d take it from that, that she loads a club much like a strong club player. The PX 5.0’s are actually reasonably stout, and the Fuji SIX is a lightweight tip-soft shaft that is not very firm-to-flex designation. Annika Sorenstam played a SIX S-flex that was tipped significantly to a certain CPM per the Callaway techs.

Cover states Lexi and other women who outdrive you. Her driving distance avg is 263. She ain’t outdriving any guy under 60 who make solid contact and has a proper driver fitting.

    • ATurner

      Apr 2, 2015 at 3:52 pm

Sorry, but actual facts aren’t on your side. Every data source has average male golfer driving the ball between 204 and 226. Just thought you should know.

      • Philip

        Apr 2, 2015 at 11:32 pm

Only, because they do not know how to use their driver or get properly fitted. Most of those same men regularly hit their 3 woods 225+. Yet, they still try and pop out one with the big dog 200+.

      • John C

        Apr 3, 2015 at 2:33 am

No they don’t. If you don’t believe me, check out the stats for the LPGA Tour driving and PGA Tour driving. 5 men hit it below 270 on average. 2 women hit it over 270 on average.

      • Scooter McGavin

        Apr 3, 2015 at 7:14 pm

This argument is dumb. The quote says she drives it longer than the average male golfer, which is true. JD randomly put these conditions on it saying “not longer than guys who make solid contact, get fitted, blah blah”. Ok, yeah, that might be true if you narrow the group you’re talking about to that, but that’s not what the article said, so there’s no point arguing this. Why can’t we all just get along?

      • Fact Checker

        Apr 8, 2015 at 10:43 pm

Fact: something that truly exists or happens : something that has actual existence… Speculation: the forming of a theory or conjecture without firm evidence. I’m pretty sure that means your argument is based on your assumption about how many people are fit and how many people hit it solid of which you have no data. On the other hand, the facts were stated as the average is between 204 and 226. I have seen the ladies play and I have seen many average men play. My speculation is that she drives it past 90% of the guys at our club. 264 AVERAGE (not her longest) is pretty long. When some other bozo brings up the PGA Tour average, I’m flabbergasted. In case they didn’t realize it, there are about 250 players who play the PGA Tour each year and most all of them would be ranked in the top 500 on PLANET EARTH! Therefore, they are in no way relevant to the “AVERAGE” guy. I’m seeing quite a few players out there with “driver envy”. Also, just for the record, I do wish they would occasionally put female golfers on the cover simply for their on course accomplishments. However, Lexi Thompson is an incredible player. She is fit, strong, beautiful, classy and a credit to young women in many ways. She appears to have her life in order and has many accomplishments to demonstrate correct priorities. I fully understand why she is on this cover and I would not be surprised to see her on a Vogue cover at some point later in her life. Some of that is very factual and some is simply my speculation based on circumstantial observation.

Also, the average PGA Tour PRO driving distance is 289. And that’s with the big hitters driving that number up. If you think that the average hacker even “with proper fitting” sniffs within 20 yards of that….

    • DaveJohns

      Apr 2, 2015 at 7:21 pm

What do you average on your drives? Not how far do you hit your better ones, what do you average? I’m not a big guy (5’7″, 150lb) and I have a driver that fits me quite nicely (MP-001) and my average driving distance is probably somewhere around 250-260. I will occasionally push 300 or better, but certainly don’t average anywhere near that. I play in a men’s league with a bunch of what would qualify as average golfers. I’m easily in the upper 3rd in average driving distance. She definitely outdrives the majority of everyday men’s golfers on average IMO… she also looks smoking hot on the cover.

      • John C

        Apr 3, 2015 at 3:32 am

Lexi is averaging 263.9 per drive right now. The shortest men’s driver, Mike Weir, is at 265.2. The two longest LPGA Tour drivers actually outdrive the 7 shortest PGA Tour drivers.

          Apr 5, 2015 at 5:42 pm

On the contrary ,, we (men) love the way you look… So what would happen if we don’t like the way you look?? Then what do they complaint about???

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
