Please keep in mind, that there is no norm for flex. It would be interesting to see cpm numbers for his shafts. But even if the cpms indicate, that he plays softer shafts in his irons compared to his woods, it still would be for a reason. Most likely, he gets want he wants to see and feel from his setup. Some players like a stable and even harsh feel in one type of club, while he/she prefers a different feel from another type of club. Fitting a player is not a one way street.
Regards,
Michael

Last I checked we were here talking and he has made an excellent living playing golf….Is it out of the norm for a tour pro? I don’t have a US Open

If he played a stiffer flex in his irons, maybe he would win occasionally!

He’s older and has shot a 59 and now a 58. I think he knows what hes doing.

Interesting that he uses x flex in woods, reg in irons, and s400 in wedges. People need to stop kissing his butt in this comment sections. If reg flex was so easy to control, why does mr control Jimmy not have them in his entire bag? The answer is because KBS play stiffer, and his reg are hard stepped. Keep dreaming people. No legit pro would use a stock reg flex throughout his bag.

I’m 77 and I use S300. Why would I use high flying reg flex if I still carry my 7 iron 150?

People are to caught up on shaft flex. The fact is there is very little difference from R to X. Weight has a bigger impact on your swing. Several years ago when my brother played some golf he used a hand me down set of irons from my dad with R flex in them. Hit them great and his driver swing speed at the time was 120mph. Its always best to use the most flexible shaft you can control.

One plays with the shaft flex that gives the best result. I’m 70, and my irons are S300 soft stepped. They work for me.
I wouldn’t criticize what shaft someone else chooses to use to achieve their own best performance.

This is because everyone thinks you should be playing stiffer shafts than you really need. I actually play the same setup in my MP64s as Jim. I bet we have similar swing speeds with the irons. The KBS Tour R flex is a great shaft and hardstepping brings down the spin to a manageable about while still keeping the trajectory high.

I wonder why he didn’t just go with KBS Tour R+ instead of hard stepping R once?

Could it be a weight thing? Going off the KBS specs, there’s a 5g weight difference between R and R+. Now just maybe, hard-stepping negates some of that difference. Or maybe not. Or maybe, the hard-stepping does something to the weight-balance that Jim likes. I don’t know. It’s a good question. Good to ask Jim himself. I have a lot of trouble watching Furyk play; not a fan of his unwatchable preshot routine. But he seems like a nice guy to talk to off the course.

Regular flex 110 gram iron shafts hard stepped? I’m surprised by that. Must get better numbers for him than a 110 stiff flex straight in.

Exactly folks….59….I think Mr Furyk knows what he’s doing and could destroy just about anyone on Golfwrx on a the course….its about performance…any competent professional will tell you that most golfers, INCLUDING PROS, play too stiff a shaft. Its about performance not your ego.

I’m not worked up about it, just find it interesting that he plays X-stiff tipped 1″ in his driver, then R-flex in his irons.

jack nicklaus did the same thing with his irons.

I really don’t see why people get so worked up in the specs of touring pros equipment. If a regular flex iron shaft works for JF, then a regular flex iron shaft is what JF should play. He could out perform anybody on this site 9.9 times out of 10 with any flex. It’s all about feel, loading the club, and performance (not just static swing speed).

Interesting… Regular flex shafts that are hard stepped? So basically in between stiff and regular. I’m guessing he could hit a stiffer shaft but wants help hitting it higher to stop on the greens.

I was thinking the same thing….Regular shafts in his irons? I understand that they are hard-stepped, but he is playing tipped X-Stiff in his driver and fairway wood and stiff in his wedges? This really doesn’t make sense.

Must be his swing. Maybe he just likes to swing slower with his irons?
