Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship preview
Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship preview

The HSBC Abu Dhabi Golf Championship will boast one of the strongest fields of any tournament all year, largely due to the hefty appearance fees paid to top players. The field includes the top four players in the Official Golf World Rankings, three of the four major winners in 2011 (no Keegan Bradley) and Tiger Woods, who is making is 2012 season debut.
Woods has already been in the news once this week for his comments about Hank Haney writing a book on their time together and now hopes to make headlines this week with his play on the course. This is Tiger’s first time in Abu Dhabi, and offers an opportunity for him to get his competitive juices flowing against a strong field.
South African Branden Grace enters the tournament fresh off back-to-back victories, making him the first player since Fred Couples in 1995 to win his first two starts on the European Tour. However, those starts weren’t against full fields and did not have near the star power as Abu Dhabi.
World No. 4 Martin Kaymer returns to Abu Dhabi looking for a three peat after dominating last year’s event with a score of 24-under, but he will have to contend against players like Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald. They want nothing more than to prove to the world they can beat the “new” Tiger at his best. The question is, can they? Each of those players enters the event with their own questions. Can Westwood and Donald ever win a major? Will McIlroy build off last season? Does Sergio have what it takes to get back in the top 10, make the Ryder Cup team and win his first major?
If Tiger wins, the talk will be about Jack Nicklaus’ major record and how quickly Tiger can get there. However, if he doesn’t play well, questions will remain about how dominant Tiger can be. All eyes will be on Woods in Abu Dhabi. Will Sunday bring more answers or more questions?
The tournament is played on the 7,600-yard Abu Dhabi Golf Club designed by golf architect Peter Harradine. It features seven lakes and 90 bunkers. The tournament will air on the Golf Channel Thursday at 4 a.m. EST with replays throughout the day.

Would love to see him at Torrey this weekend, but it has been a blast watching him play with Rory and Luke. It’s a fun group to watch this weekend.
