Is there an unforgivable mistake for a first time club build?
In our forums, our members have been sharing advice for first time club builders. WRXer ‘PatrickJDawes’ is looking to build his first set of irons, but is understandably a little anxious, and reaches out to fellow members saying:
“I’ve been digging back through threads here and watching a bunch of YouTube videos. I’ve found some great info—like how to calculate swing weight without a swing weight scale—and I’ve been trying to pay attention to all the tips and suggestions along the way.
That said, I’m still a little terrified that I’m going to mess something up. I’m planning to go with steel shafts, since from what I’ve read, they seem to be a bit more forgiving if you make a mistake.
So I have one question for the more experienced builders out there: Is there really a mistake I could make during the build process that would 100% ruin the clubheads?”
And our members have been sharing their top tips in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- MickeyTankBank: “Unless you torch to the point of melting or send a poorly glued head into a lake, not a lot that will 100% ruin a clubhead. The vast majority of mistakes can be fixed.”
- SBH9458: “My humble suggestion is take the oldest wedge you’ve got and pull its shaft… and work your process by building it a couple times. Figure out the way you’ll do this with all our lessons learned built in. Everything from Swingweights to grips to ferrules to cleanup. It all adds up to you getting what you want after your build. Cheap at the price for lessons learned that don’t involve 8 irons.”
- Cwebb: “To leave epoxy finger prints on them. I have a hard time forgiving that.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Hi my name is Tiger Woods. Long time reader, first time commenter.
I am now a professional and have my clubs built for me by my sponsor, TaylorMade, but there was a time when I built some of my own clubs, particularly wedges. And one time I built a nice wedge but didn’t have a ferrule for it. So I put it together with no ferrule. The no-ferrule wedge had the guys on the internet laughing at me. If you look hard enough you might find pictures of it.
