PGA.com and the golf world lost a huge advocate and friend today as Jim Huber, – host, speaker, moderator and writer of the popular “A Sense of Huber” on PGA.com – passed away Monday, January 2, 2012 at the age of 67 after being diagnosed with acute leukemia.

Jim’s award winning talent to write, host and moderate was well known – but his passion for golf; playing, watching and promoting golf was something that the PGA of America and PGA.com will always hold near and dear. And even more, his friendship to those lucky enough to know him was his greatest contribution of all. He will be sorely missed as a friend, a colleague and a mentor.

Turner Sports President David Levy has released the following statement:

“The Turner Broadcasting family suffered a great loss and we are saddened by the passing of our colleague and friend, Jim Huber. A terrific Emmy Award winning journalist and essayist, Jim made so many contributions during his more than 27 years with our company. He was a gentleman and wonderful individual and will be deeply missed. We send our condolences to his wife, Carol, and son, Matt.”

Other tributes and thoughts that have been coming in include:

Allen Wronowski, President of The PGA of America:

“Anyone who knew Jim Huber beyond his wonderful words in front of a camera or in print understood that he had a special gift. Jim made us all pause and feel a bit better about ourselves. He applied his passion for the game of golf to support The PGA of America at our National Awards program, creating an Oscar night for us all. At the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, Jim added a Midas touch to the season-ending reward for golf’s major champions. We will long remember and cherish his fireside chats, and the twinkle in his eye as he met with the game’s finest players. Golf lost a wonderful friend, and The PGA of America extends its deepest sympathy and prayers to his wife, Carol, and son, Matt.”

The 2012 U.S. Ryder Cup team captain, Davis Love III:

“A highlight of a good round of golf at a major tournament was a chance to sit and chat with my friend Jim Huber. On and off camera he was a friend to Robin and me since we joined the PGA Tour. Our prayers go out to all the Huber family.”

Golf icon and the subject of Jim’s 2010 book “Four Days in July” Tom Watson:

“We will sorely miss Jim and his Huberization of the events, people, and places in our wonderful world of golf. His grand storytelling and the way he treated his fellow human beings are what I will remember most about this fine gentleman.”

More details and tributes to follow, as we share this heartbreaking news with the PGA.com community.
