5 Wood vs. Hybrid vs. Driving/Utility Iron – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing where they stand on the 5-wood vs Hybrid vs UI dilemma. WRXer ‘Michboomin’ kicks off the thread, saying
“I play an Apex 3i w/ MMT 105TX, and it’s fantastic, can hit every shot; I recommend this set up to anyone. However….I like to tinker, and something keeps telling me to try a 5 wood. I tested out a Titleist 2 hybrid last season and wasn’t a fan, hybrids just don’t feel solid to me.
Just curious what you guys like to play and why.”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- lefthack: “I love my 5 wood. I am still playing with other clubs; I am currently using the GAPR Lo 3 and thinking of getting the Lazrus 2i. I have also thought about a 7 wood just because. I took my 3 wood and GAPR Mid 4 out, so I have room for something at the top.”
- PEI_Golfer: “I prefer a hybrid and have settled in nicely with my 19* TS3 (set to C1) with AV Raw Blue 75X. Very stable and quite straight now vs. the out going stock EFW T1100 S and X. Tried to replace it with a Sim 5wd this year, and it just didn’t work out. I dabble with DI’s, but the hybrid is as long and more versatile.”
- Ger21: “I swapped a 5w for a 2 hybrid, as the 5 wood would balloon too often. Both, though, are much longer than a 3iron, so I also carry a 3 hybrid that replaced a 3 iron. Prefer the 3 iron from the tee, but the iron is much more usable everywhere else.”
- SteelieD: “I finally ditched the hybrid and put a 5 wood back in the bag. Hybrids and I just never got along.”

When you get old (77) your bag looks like this : D, 3w, 5w, 7w, 5h, 6h, 7,8,9,pw, gw, sw, and lw.
Hit a wood or hb into all par 4’s and 3’s. May get to use a short iron on a par 5. I moved up to senior tees, 5850, at age 70. Now play 4 par 4’s that were over 380 from the ladies at 300 to 320. Now about 5650. Starting to get fun again last 3 rounds I shot my age or better thanks to short game.

I will keep this setup until something breaks:
– 16.5 fairway wood (4 wood, regardless that it says 3 on the club)
– 915h #3, 21 set at 20. A 2.5 iron with both hybrid and wood characteristics.
– 4 iron from 24 to 22, 5 iron from 27 to 26, 6 iron at 30 ….
