High spin, high MOI irons. Do they exist? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing whether high spin, high MOI irons exists. WRXer ‘SMAC43’ kicks off his search, saying:

“Love the forgiveness but hate the low spin. Seems like all the newer more forgiving irons (apex cf, p790/770, jpx forged, i500 etc.) are all distance rockets. Are there any larger and more forgiving heads that don’t have the hot face technology?”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum – with TaylorMade’s P770 irons proving to be a popular choice.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Shupe: “P770 has really consistent spin numbers. I’m a lower spin player, and they are fine for me). Get them a little weaker, and you should be fine. I play blades, and the p770s fit in well at the very top of the bag, so I don’t have to play a hybrid. TaylorMade nailed the mix between player/distance iron. Give them a try.”
  • Feelingofgreatness: “Pxg 0311 P model. Very forgiving and not super low spin.”
  • Jakra1234: “As a fairly high spinning player. I spun the p770 7 iron at around 6200 and a 46 descent angle. That’s about right where I wanted it, and it was the only club to do it. Only reason I say this, is relative to other clubs like the jpx 921 forged, the mp20 HMB, p790, and Callaway x forged, all of them spun much less and had a lower descent angles, believe it or not. Way too many people look at spin w/o looking at descent angle. I would not call the p770 low spin clubs actually, I personally find them incredibly controllable. They are kinda in a field of their own right now and definitely worth a hit.”
  • Jamie_Tee: “I’m after a similar thing and play MP20 HMB. Reasonable PW loft at 46 degrees. Not much offset to my eye. Forgiving but not aggressive low spin.”

Spotted: Titleist GTS USWO headcovers

Published

on

GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore was at Riviera Country Club this last week in Los Angeles for the U.S. Women’s Open. While browsing the photos, I spotted a recent major trend in headcovers. That is, the Titleist GTS headcover line expands the majors theme.

Seen on the bag of Natalia Guseva were the red, white, and blue Titleist GTS covers. This is the third time we have seen limited-edition Titleist major covers, the others being at the Masters and the PGA Championship. But with the launch of the GTS line back at the Texas Children’s Houston Open in March, this is the first time we have seen Titleist come out with major themed head covers for the season (driver headcovers through hybrids).

Check out some photos below.

At the Masters, we saw the familiar Masters green, white, and yellow. While the PGA Championship design was colors synonymous with the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team. This shows the season major drops continue full steam ahead for major OEMs. New opportunities for each major for designs and themes, and who knows, maybe a lucky spark for a player and a major championship for their resume. It gets the wheels turning for what major theme headcover you would keep on your bag for the whole season!
