Wunder: My top 3 favorite bags on tour right now

Published

on

#3 Scottie Scheffler

100 percent committed to what works with little reference to what’s new and could perhaps give him an extra 10 yards. After a career year, the U of T grad showed the world exactly what he was capable of.

Driver: Ping G400 LST (8.5 degrees @7.75)
Shaft: Fujikura Atmos Black Tour Spec 7 X

3-wood: Nike VR Pro Ltd (15 degrees)
Shaft: Aldila Rogue Black 110 M.S.I. 70 TX

Utility: Srixon ZU85 (3)

Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400

Putter: Scotty Cameron Circle T Newport

Ball: Titleist Pro V1

#2 Tommy Fleetwood

Fairway Jesus will have a new bouquet of TaylorMade weapons in his bag for 2021, but in 2020 his bag was a gear junkie’s dream. Fleetwood’s ability to shift set makeup, mix brands, and simply just pull it off is what we all want for our free agents. If you can, you should, right?

Driver: Titleist TSi3 (9 degrees @ 8.25, D2 Surefit)
Shaft: Fujikura Ventus Black 7 X (tipped 1 inch, 44.75 inches)

3-wood: Titleist TSi2 (15 degrees @ 14.25, C1 Surefit)

Grips: Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord (D, 3W, 5W, wedges), Iomic Sticky (Irons)

Ball: Titleist Pro V1

#1 Bernhard Langer

Talk about not caring what it looks like. Bernhard Langer’s bag is the epitome of if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. On any given day, he could carry 2 to 3 irons that are 15-plus years old, hybrids (with shafts that don’t exist anymore) that are 10-plus, and a putter—well Google it and do the math, it’s an antique.

Driver: Ping G400 (9 degrees)
Shaft: Graphite Design Tour AD IZ 6X

3-wood: TaylorMade SIM Max (15 degrees)
Shaft: Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7X

Hybrid: Adams Idea Pro (18, 22 degrees)
Shaft: RT Technologies Midas X

Irons: (4,5) Artisan CB. (6) Adams Idea Pro MB, (7-9) Artisan MB, (PW) TaylorMade RSI TP
Shafts: Hogan Apex 4

Wedges: Cleveland 588 RTX (56- 10), Vokey SM7 (60-10K)
Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400

Grips: Golf Pride V55 (set at 11:30)

Putter: Odyssey 2-Ball Long

Ball: Titleist Pro V1

Honorable Mention: Scott Piercy

Lead tape lovin’, 10-finger gripping awesomeness. Since his split from Titleist, he has added a bit of flavor to the bag with a Callaway driver, TaylorMade 3-wood, and Artisan lob wedge, but overall it’s probably the most fun bag to just look at. I mean the guy still has 680’s!

Driver: Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero (10.5 @9)
Shaft: Fujikura Pro 83X but has since switched into a TPT prototype

3-wood: TaylorMade M3 HL (17 @ 15.5)
Shaft: Aldila RIP X 80TX

Hybrid: Titleist TS2 (19 A1 Surefit)
Shaft: Fujikura Fuel 95X

Irons: (4-PW) Titleist 680 Forged
Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100

Wedges: Vokey SM4 Custom (52@53, 56@58) Artisan (62)
Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400

Putter: Scotty Cameron Go-Lo

Ball: Titleist Pro V1

Grips: Golf Pride Tour Velvet MID

No clue where he gets those iron shafts but you can still get those hybrid shafts from RT Technologies. The owner, Robbie Newton, livers here in Northwest Arkansas and I love those shafts. Have his Midas in my hybrid and the Zeus Proto LT in my driver. Some smaller tour players still use his equipment.

No wonder Langer is such a slow player. He can’t find anything in that OCD nightmare of a bag.

Why, because he’d not a whore like all the rest of the cookie cutter golden spooners? What a DB.

If it works, leave it alone. Just re-gripped my 40+ year old Anser2 with a Lamkin Sinkfit Grip that costs more than the value of the putter! LOL! Re Bernhard Langer, such a great competitor and roll model. Love to watch him play.

Ryan Palmer is another bag that is awesome.

Where do you suppose Langer is getting Apex 4 shafts to use in his irons? Is he buying old Hogan’s and harvesting them, or is there some supply somewhere?

I think Langer has had them for like 40 years. I’m sure he has a stock pile somewhere of them from when Royal Precision made them back in the day. Either that or he’s pulling them from set to set, I’d imagine steel can be pulled many times.

Interesting clubs at top of bag – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, users are talking about top of bag setups that are non-traditional or thought-provoking in some way. Original poster @SuperSpurs106 inquired about other members who might use unorthodox set-ups to help with gapping issues or weak spots.

They wrote:

“I currently have a PING G430 driver, TM Qi35 3W and a TM Qi4D 7W. Driver and 7W are fine but can’t get on with my 3W and have always struggling with this club over the years. Thinking of adding a 2H which I know would look odd. Just wondering if anyone else had a weird set up at the top of their bag?”

Our members in the forum have offered up their thoughts and personal experiences with non-traditional top of bag set-ups, and their reasoning for thinking outside of the box to begin with. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • BowMain42: “Don’t worry about what “looks” odd. If the club does what you need it to do, it’s the right club.”
  • scooterhd2: “I cant hit 3 woods either. Thats why I roll with a unicorn XL Hibore 2 wood. 400 cc head at 16 degrees of loft and its just a monster 3 wood off the tee. Off the deck, we are playing the f6 baffler. 5 wood at 41.75 inches and its easy to control.”
  • phizzy30: “I had driver, 3 metal, 2/4 hybrid once upon a time as a higher ss player. 4 hybrid is gone and in place is a driving iron nowadays. I don’t think what you’re proposing is weird in anyway, however the yardage gap might be glaringly huge between driver and 2 hybrid. What is it about your 3 metal that has got you all messed up? You could always go 4 metal with shorter shaft and see if that works.”

Members of the Mini Driver Club – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, one user has gone searching for fellow users of a mini driver. In a post, @TightFade asked for other mini driver users to chime in with their weapon of choice, the reason for employing a mini, and what club follows it in the bag.

@TightFade asked:

“What mini are you playing? What spot in the bag did it take over? What’s the next club after it? For me: Elyte mini 13.5. Replacing 3w. Next up club looks like it’ll be 5w.”

Our members in the forum have been sharing their own bag setups featuring the mini driver, and the various reasons they purchased one in the first place. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • RCGA: “Ping G430 Max 12* ‘Thriver.’ Next club is a 4w and 2i (I play a weird course).”
  • JMB3: “R7 at 12.75 with Diamana BB 63s. 3w replacement. Next Club: Elyte Ti 5w at 17*.”
  • ColdOkieGolf: “R7 15.5 turned down to 13.5 It replaces the 3w. I found it surprisingly easy to hit off the deck, and it’s very rare that I need or want to hit something beyond 250 from the fairway, so next club is my 7w.”
  • ChaosTheory: “I’m sub-90 MPH with driver. But I’m able to hit DOD. I have been wanting something like the R7 15.5, so I just ordered one. I have a spot in the bag so nothing has to go. But I could see it replacing my trusty 4 wood, which I never use for approach shots. Just tee shots and lay ups. If I drop the 4 wood, I will turn my 7 wood down to ~20 degrees and will have good gaps. I recently tried a thriver build: 12 degree driver turned to 14, with a heavier 44 inch shaft and added head weight. I hit it great. Very accurate and not overly high, but the problem was that it sometimes went as far as a typical drive. And that’s not what I needed. So I will probably turn the 15.5 up to 16.5 or even 17.5. It’s all theoretical at this point. ?”
