What GolfWRXers are saying about the most underrated golf balls of all time
In our forum, our members have been discussing golf balls which they feel have been massively underrated by the masses. WRXer ‘BeerPerHole’ kicks off the discussion with his two choices of Lynx’ Black Cat and Top Flite’s D2 Feel, and our members have been weighing in with their thoughts on the subject.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- hagimihale: “From a purely distance perspective, the Callaway HX Hot were (at that time) longer than anything else I tried. One tee shot in particular stands out. I was gaming Mizuno MX-23 (with S300 shafts) at the time, teed off with a 4i on a short (330yd) par-4. No wind, hole ran straight from tee to green with no dogleg. Typically tee shot with my 4 was around 200yds. I flushed it, one of those shots where there was no sensation of impact. Got up to my ball and I was just inside 90yds to the green. It was at least a 230-yd 4-iron. I know I flushed it, but that ball was long when you hit it on the screws. Of course, it didn’t have the spin or feel around the greens that ProVs etc. have. But if you were in a scramble and it was the long drive hole, this was the ball I’d switch to…”
- Kentendo: “The Hogan Tour Deep was the real deal and completely underrated.”
- Golf64: “Wilson makes great balls, but doesn’t get the notoriety like the other big OEMs.”
- aquapig: “Callaway Supersoft.”
- blazman11: “I really liked the Wilson FG Tour X. I held on to my last half dozen for about 3 years until I finally hit the last one in the water about 8 months ago.”
- MattM97: “Srixon Z-Start line and the Q-Star Tour. Both usually overlooked by people usually going for the Titleist or Callaway balls, but they’re just as good and several bucks cheaper. Enjoy both but prefer the Z-Star XV as it works for my game.”
- tom.lockhart: “For me – the most underrated ball of all time is the RBZ Urethane. It was long, low spin off the driver, great greenside spin and cheap. When that ball was discontinued and TM “replaced” it with the project a – it was just never the same. Now I have to say it’s the AVX, that ball was built for me. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but for someone who has always struggled with too much spin, and a VERY high/ballooning ball flight – this ball has been a savior for me. I’m straighter and longer off the tee than ever before, my irons have straightened out and gained about 10 yards, and I can still hit the ball high enough and with enough spin to hold greens with every club except my 3Wood. That ball single-handedly dropped my handicap about 2 strokes last season – and this season is just starting out.”
