If you have to swing at 100% to make the shot then you should club up? – GolfWRXers have their say

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing whether or not you should club up if you need to swing at 100% with a certain club to hit the shot. WRXer ‘jjfcpa’ concluded at the range this week that: “trying to swing at 100% (or even close to it) typically results in a much less than 100% result”, and our members have been having their say.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • MtlJeff: “Mostly agree, however, I would say that some scenarios (like needing to hit a wedge over a tree) require you to make a full swing with a specific club. But in 99% of situations, yes.”
  • jwadds19: “There is no right or wrong answer here. Every golfer and every swing is different. I don’t think you should risk a shot over water knowing that only your best can make the carry all the time, but that doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t ever hit that shot. Some people hate flying greens, so they know if they miss short at least they can see where their miss is.”
  • James the Hogan Fan: “For the general fairway shot with an iron, or from the tee, and assuming 100% means beginning to lose control to squeeze extra distance, I agree with the advice above. As others mentioned, a shot could have other, secondary objectives like clearing an obstacle or overcoming a bad lie, where this is not true. But as a basic and general rule, I like it.”
  • Old Tom Morris: “Some days when swinging and striking it very well I feel like stepping on a short iron, and it serves me well. Other days it would be better to club up and put a smooth swing on it.”
