Today from the Forums: “Mid to high handicappers – What club helped you lower your handicap?”
Today from the Forums, we take a look at an interesting discussion amongst mid to high handicappers who found a specific club or clubs that helped them lower their handicap. WRXers have been mentioning their “magic” club in our forums, with a wide variety getting a mention.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- mantan: “G400 Max driver. Having confidence off the tee and being able to drive the ball consistently (for me) was a game-changer. Shot my personal best, dropped my handicap over the course of the year and played the best golf of my life last year. So of course, in WRX fashion, I just ordered a Cobra SZ Extreme.”
- agolf1: “Dropping long irons. Fairways or hybrids as the replacement. Just don’t have the swing speed or strike consistency to hit something with less loft than my 5-iron.”
- BiggErn: “I’m a mid-single, but I can tell you what will drop it. Get in play off the tee whether it’s with driver or an iron. That doesn’t mean bisecting the fairway just not taking penalty strokes. Take your medicine on the 1 out of 10000 shot instead of trying the hero shot. Don’t pi$$ shots away around the green. From the sand just get it on. The rest eliminate or greatly reduce the skulls and duffs. Lastly, minimize the three-putts.”
- scomac2002: “That’s easy: for me, it is the long putter. If you have back trouble, you don’t practice much. The long putter allows you to develop an address position with the putter in hand that is easy on the back, thus allowing more practice. More practice leads to better putting. Better putting means less putts per round and the handicap drops accordingly. Next would be the 5 hybrid. It’s so versatile; off the tee, for lay-ups and approach shots. Gouging balls out of the rough. You can even bump and run with it from off the green. When all else is failing you, the 5 hybrid will keep the ball in play and save you strokes.”
- luckypolk: “Getting wedges with the correct bounce and grind for my swing and course conditions.”

Have now settled with 5 wedges a 9iron ,4 hybrids, 5 & 3 wood plus Driver. Handicap down from 14 to 11. As an over 70 year old have realised how short game wedges are essential and that hyrids are the answer as swing speeds drop .

Pretty tough question. I also have a Ping G400 MAX, shortened the shaft by 1″, and my shaft is a 70 series. I also went to a 36″ putter with a slight toe hang. If I could just figure out my shots around the green I’d be in business.
