Forum Thread of the Day: “The perfect senior bag set-up?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from platgof and revolves around what is the perfect bag set-up for senior players. Stressing a need for “clubs that help elevate the ball and give me a chance to keep the ball in play”, our members divulge to platgof what they feel is the ideal bag set-up for seniors.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say on the subject at the link below.

  • SwingBlade: “Nowadays not really sure what a “senior golfer” really is. I think the way to address these issues is to define handicap range and swing speed of driver and current distance and trajectory of maybe a 6 iron and an 8 iron. Other big question is the extent to which ball compression is really taking place. I play with guys aged from 50-80, and their sets vary from super forgiving sets up to players sets with blades and stiff shafts. I’m 72 and driver is still around 250-275, 6 iron is 170, 8 iron is 150, PW is 125, 56 is 100-105, 60 is 65-85. Get fit for your clubs, continue to take lessons, perform stretches and yoga moves constantly, and if necessary, do stretching in a hot shower before heading to the range. Maybe most of all don’t define yourself as “senior” at 50, 60, or even 70. My favorite “senior” is now 100 years old, but he was still walking and carrying and shooting par at 80.”
  • jjfcpa: “I’m definitely a senior golfer at 71 years old. Here’s my bag setup and like the OP, I’ve spent a lot of money getting to this point and feel pretty good about my current bag, but with money in my pocket, there’s always room for improvement. Considering the PXG 0211’s.Driver – Tour Edge EXS 10.5 Epic Flash – Heavenwood and 3w Callaway Rogue X – 4h, Cobra F9 – 5i -PW, Callaway MD4 – 48, 54, and 58, Scotty Cameron Newport 2, Oncore Elixir. As you can see, I’m not a brand fanboy. I go with what seems to work for me.”
  • Hertsjoatmon: “While not a senior, I decided to go with a very senior style set up for the forgiving nature of such clubs rather than anything else. Had my driver swing speed checked yesterday and I was swinging 94-97 on the range but more like 85-90 on course. I had decided that I need to stop taking it too seriously as a really high handicapper and play just to enjoy the game. I don’t get much time to practice, so not looking to shape shots etc.”
  • sdandrea: “67 years old with a left knee replacement and right shoulder replacement (right knee replacement pending). My game relies on finding the fairway and keeping it in play (12 handicapper). I rotate a lot of irons thru the bag, but the consistent set up is a driver that I can hit straight, a lofted FW that I can advance the ball in play, some hybrids down to 27* loft and then 7i to wedges for scoring.”
  • larryd3: “I’m 63. I have S flex shafts in the M4 driver 12* turned as low as it will go, in the Epic 15* and in the H1 hybrids. In the PXG irons, I have R flex i70 steel fiber shafts through gap wedge, and the Vokey’s have stock shafts, but I’m going to re-shaft them to match the irons. I had the putter fit at Club Champion, and it was definitely worth the fitting cost.”

xi graphite shafts (100 gram) are as tip and butt stiff as any steel shaft
but the soft mid section reduces vibration, kick and torque
therefore are especially good for arthritic issues.

Having slowed down a little, arthritis in my knees and not hitting as consistently as I’d like, I got my current setup in 2017. Got it down between Mizuno JPX EZ and Ping G’s, and the G’s won me over. Got my distance back, loved the flight and feel with the XP95’s. Entire bag is Ping except driver.
