Forum Thread of the Day: “Moving from players irons to game improvement irons”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from jjnorris2 who due to a lack of free time on his hands is considering a move from his AP2’s to game improvement irons. Our members discuss the best options for jjnorris2, while those who have made the switch in the past due to similar circumstances share their experience.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • dmeeksDC: “Game improvement irons these days are a lot more player profile than they used to be. Mizuno 919 Hot Metals would be a great choice. So would the Hot Metal Pros or the 919 Forged. All are more forgiving on mishits vs the AP2.”
  • Chris_NH: “I did exactly this a couple of months ago. I was as low as a seven a few years ago and loved my Ping S58s. But as my index has climbed up to its current 12, and my iron play became the weakest element of my game, I decided to seek more forgiveness in my irons. I swapped to the Ping G400s. I was expecting a bit more forgiveness, but I wasn’t prepared for just how much better I hit these: higher trajectory, more forgiveness, and MUCH more confidence. All I can say is I should’ve done it earlier.”
  • Jokbal: “I went from playing about 40 rounds in the summer to now about 12-15 rounds after baby #2. Ball striking hasn’t suffered much although I’ve now switched to Srixon 745’s from MB’s. Where I saw the most noticeable deficiencies were in my short game (chipping & putting). I used to love putting, thought of myself as a good putter, its so bad now.”
  • golfjam: “My index is 2.8 and played blades for 20yrs. Switched to HMP and my GIR improved, you don’t have to hit it perfect, and it will still fly like you did. I’m getting old, was losing distance and got it all back plus a little more. It’s very workable too, draw, face, low etc… Only downside you will get a “flyer” once in a while when you hit it good. Like 20+ yards out of nowhere.  Personally the trade off is worth it, four iron should be a driving iron, it’s so long and easy to hit I retired my five wood.”
