Greg Norman discusses hustling members as a youngster, the fan abuse he suffered at the ’86 US Open in an interview with Dan Patrick
In an episode of Undeniable with Dan Patrick which airs Wednesday on AT&T Audience Network, Dan Patrick takes an in-depth look at the life of multiple major champion, Greg Norman.
During the hour-long interview, Norman discusses subjects from his early childhood, to how he got started playing golf, to some of the key moments from his playing career.
Amongst those subjects is how the Australian used to hustle members while working at a country club as a young man. In the interview, Norman states how he was making $28 a week at the time, and hustling members was a way for him to earn extra cash. Recounting a story from those days, Norman explained how the experience of hustling made him more self-assured in being able to close out a match.
“I was down $800 heading to the 17th tee, and I didn’t have $800. I was playing with this gentleman called Cyrul King, and Cyrul turned at me and said ‘You want to double?’ I said ‘Ok’, and I finished eagle-birdie and I won money, and I took their money, and I put it in the bank. That taught me a big lesson about being a strong believer in your own beliefs on how to close out a match or to not be afraid to take on a bet, or if you truly think you can execute, go ahead and execute. So, that was a big learning point.”
Norman also discussed a pivotal moment in his career, when he wasn’t able to close on a Sunday afternoon at Shinnecock Hills at the 1986 US Open. The Australian held a one-shot lead heading into the final round of the event, and Norman stated how he lost his cool with the abuse he was receiving from the fans that day, and how it was a significant learning experience for himself.
“It was interesting with the crowd reaction. They were saying ‘Go home you effing Aussie’, ‘You can’t play golf’, ‘You’re a choker’, you’re this, you’re that, so it was very hard because they get you while you’re walking between the green and the tee, when you’ve got six foot of space, and they’re just yelling into your ear.
So it was hard to focus on it, and I kind of lost my cool on one of the holes on Sunday, and I should never have done it. I went up into the gallery, and I knew who it was. There was this sea of faces, and I just swung to the right, walked right up to this guy, and I said ‘Look, if you want to say something to me, say it to me in the car park at the end of the round when I can do something about it’.
I broke the sporting code of golf, and I should never have done it, but I just had enough. It was an education for me to tune yourself out or block things out a little bit better.”
The full interview airs Wednesday, April 3, on AT&T Audience Network, DIRECTV channel 239, at 8 pm ET.

The Shark is a different dude. One of the best players ever during his prime and has made a ton of money outside the ropes in the last 20 years. Is he currently relevant not really. Fox made a huge mistake when they had him on the Open broadcast.
