Tony Romo will tee it up in a PGA Tour event next month

Tony Romo will make his PGA Tour debut at next month’s Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship in the Dominican Republic.

Romo, who has unsuccessfully tried his hand at U.S. Open qualifying in the past, was granted a sponsor’s exemption into the field. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback maintains a +0.3 handicap.

He’s in the field (as an amatuer) for this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he said

“As an athlete, I think you always want to play and compete. Obviously, I have a passion for golf and I’ve been doing it at different tournaments throughout my life. I think it’s an honor to be presented with that opportunity and get a chance to play with some of the best players in the world and get to test your game and see what you got.”

The current CBS NFL analyst was mum on the prospect of pursuing a professional golf career, but No. 9 clearly understands it’d be an uphill battle.

“You never know how good you are until you go play and perform, and ultimately, the odds going against these guys are not great. I think we all know that. But I think that’s what makes it really fun and enjoyable, and I also think the challenge that’s presented is what a competitor really wants.

Romo failed to qualify for last year’s U.S. Open. He made it to sectional qualifying in 2010, but was ultimately forced to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts.

PGATour.com’s Mike McAllister, was willing to daydream about the possibility of Tony Romo: Professional golfer.

“More important, for the first time in his life, he has the time, the health and the desire to make golf a daily part of his life. So maybe he gets more invites into TOUR events. Maybe he sees progress. Maybe the competitive juices flow just like they did when he quarterbacked the Dallas Cowboys.”

“And maybe one day, he chases membership onto a professional tour. Consider this: Romo has 13 years to fine-tune his game for the PGA TOUR Champions. He could follow the same path as another former NFL quarterback, John Brodie, who retired from the NFL at age 35 and eventually became a Champions member once he turned 50, even winning one event.”

And for what it’s worth, die hard Cowboys fan Jordan Spieth had this to say about Romo’s professional prospects

“He’s going to practice it all the time. That’s all he’s been doing. Yeah, I think that’s not out of the realm at all.”

In some sense, Stephen Curry’s performance at last year’s Ellie Mae Classic on the Web.com Tour, readjusted our expectations for professional athletes playing professional golf. While it’s tempting to say 37-year-old Romo doesn’t have a prayer of playing professionally, who knows?

One thing is for sure: There will be a few more eyeballs trained on the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship next month, which is the point of sponsor’s exemptions after all, right?

Rory McIlroy made it two wins in as many years at Augusta National, seeing off the challengers on a dramatic Sunday to slip on the green jacket once again. The victory earned Rory a whopping payday of $4.5 million, with Scottie Scheffler his closest challenger earning $2.43 million for his sole runner-up finish.

CBS’s Sunday Masters coverage slammed by golf fans

While Sunday was a dramatic day at the Masters, many golf fans were left feeling frustrated by the CBS final round coverage.

There were plenty of moments that golf fans took to social media to air their frustrations on Sunday over, including a lack of shots being shown throughout the day, being behind the live action, confusion over the approach shots of the final group on 18, and providing an angle for the winning putt where the cup couldn’t be seen.

Here’s a look at some of the criticisms that were directed at the CBS coverage throughout the day on X:

The surprise club Tommy Fleetwood says is key to his Masters chances

Tommy Fleetwood goes in search for the first major victory of his career again this week, with the Englishman proving to be a popular pick at Augusta National.

Fleetwood’s best showing at Augusta came back in 2024 where he finished T3, and while speaking at his pre-tournament press conference, the 35-year-old emphasized the importance of his 9-wood in his pursuit of the green jacket.

Speaking on Tuesday to media, Fleetwood said:

“It’s a great 9-wood golf course. I think it’s always been — I can’t remember when I first put like a 9-wood in or a high lofted club, but it’s a perfect like 9-wood golf course. I’ve had that in the bag for a few years.”

The Englishman continued, revealing that his strategy for the week won’t just be to hit driver off the tee as much as possible:

“Yeah, it’s funny really because I know Augusta is probably associated with being fairly forgiving off the tee in a way, so you think you can whale around driver a little bit. But I don’t necessarily think that’s always the play for me. I think there’s holes that set up really well where I can draw it with the mini driver if I’m feeling less comfortable with the driver and things like that.”

That strategy he believes will make his TaylorMade Qi10 9-wood extra critical this week in Georgia:

“The biggest thing is the 9-wood for me. If I can put myself in position on the par-5s or the 4th long par-3, like it — for me, I can’t really hit that high 4-iron, so 9-wood helps me a lot.”
