Emiliano Grillo wins 2016 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors

One shot. One opportunity. That’s all a PGA Tour player gets to seize Rookie of the Year honors, and for 2016, Emiliano Grillo captured that trophy.

The Argentinian became a familiar name in the golf world in the 2015-2016. After winning the 2015 Web.com Tour Finals, Grillo won the 2015 Frys.com (which is now the Safeway Open), the first event of the 2015-2016 PGA Tor season. He continued his stellar play throughout the season, finishing in the top-20 in three of the four major championships, and ultimately 11th in the PGA Tour’s 2015-2016 FedExCup.

To win the R.O.Y. honors, Grillo beat out a strong class, including one-time PGA Tour winner and #SB2K16 participant Smylie Kaufman (Shriners Hospitals for Children’s Open), and Si Woo Kim, who won the Wyndham Championship.

Previous winners of the trophy, which was first given out in 1990, include John Daly (’91), Vijay Singh (’93), Ernie Els (’94), Tiger Woods (’96), Brandt Snedeker (’07), Rickie Fowler (’10) and Jordan Spieth (’13). Grillo is in good company.
