Tiger Woods will not play golf in 2016
It’s official: Tiger Woods will not play in the PGA Championship, or any other professional golf tournament this year.
Today, Woods withdrew from the PGA Championship, and Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, sent an email to GolfChannel.com that said Woods is:
“Continuing to make progress, but simply not ready for PGA. Will not play in the ’15/’16 season and will continue to rehab and work hard to then assess when he starts play for the ’16/’17 season.”
Woods has not played professional golf since last August’s Wyndham Championship where he tied for 10th, but failed to qualify for the PGA Tour’s 2015 FedExCup Playoffs. He underwent two back surgeries in the fall, and while he has been spotted playing and practicing golf, Woods has maintained that he is not yet physically ready to return to professional golf, and is not sure when he will be.
Woods will be replaced at the PGA Championship by Harold Varner III. It’s the season’s final major, and takes place July 28-31 at Baltusrol in Springfield, New Jersey.

The former Ryder Cup player believes Woods isn’t putting himself through the rehab process because he feels some sense of duty. “I don’t think he needs to do this,” Feherty said. “He wants to do this. He really really does. But I am not sure that he can. I am not sure he is in any way clear on whether the can either.”

Lucien Favre, I suppose, coach for football team Borussia Mönchengladbach until the beginning of last season, when he quit suddenly (even though management, players and supporters all wanted him to stay) because the team wasn’t doing well. At least that was the story as it came across in the media. The truth behind it seems to be that he had health problems, though (I think he was suffering from a depression, but that’s more based on a rumor, I have nothing to back that up) and just did not feel like he could keep doing his job.

Headline appears misleading. Steinberg’s statement was different – not 15/16 season but when commencing in 16/17 season… not saying its likely but a calendar 2016 start in a lower profile event like the Shriners or RSM isn’t ruled out

Look. Tiger is never going to be “Tiger” again, but it would be fun to see him back on tour and mixing it up a bit with the younger crowd. But I don’t think that is going to happen. One, I’m not sure if his body will ever be able to fully rehabilitate itself. Whether it’s his swing, age, or PEDs, I’m not sure his body will be able to repair. Two, I’m not sure Tiger himself will want to be out there trying to make cuts. If he had the ability to dominate again, that’s one thing; but I think whenever he comes back he’ll struggle to keep up. When you’ve been at the top of the world with regards to performance and success, why would he want to grind it out every week to make cuts. Like I said at the beginning, I wish he would go out there and mix it up again—I just don’t think that’s going to happen.

highly improbable now given his age, health, and the last major he won was 8 years ago

Almost all players with multiple majors fall into the pre 32-34 or post 32-34 age catagory when they were winning their majors – all the way back to Hogan and Palmer. Very rare (except for Jack) for a player to win majors in their early to mid 20’s and in their mid to late 30’s. In 2008 Tiger was ~33 years old – no post 34 majors for him (as of yet???)
