10 Revealing Photos from the Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Published

on

GolfWRX was live this week from the 2016 Zurich Classic of New Orleans at TPC Louisiana. If you missed any of the photos from earlier this week, make sure to browse all of the galleries below.

TPC Louisiana isn’t technically in New Orleans, it’s in Avondale, but we’ll call it close enough to throw on our Mardi Gras beads and get the party started. Break out some cajun seasoning, boil up your crawfish and let’s reveal some photos from the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

A bug’s life

I’m not certain whether the bugs flew on the clubs by accident, or if they’re intentional alternatives to tungsten or lead tape.

They could be new tour-issue insects we at GolfWRX just haven’t heard about yet, which would be a first.

Speaking of arthropods, check out Jason Day’s new Spider Limited Red putter, which has a design based on a venomous Redback Spider native to Australia.

Back to reality

With no music blasting or shots of tequila at the turn. I know, Rickie, life’s tough.

A recent grip change for Rose

It’s been one year since Justin Rose won on the PGA Tour, his last victory coming at the 2015 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He recently switched to the claw putting grip, too, possibly in an attempt to claw back into the winner’s circle again this year.

At least his caddie liked the claw joke.

On the grind

You know you’ve truly made it in the world of professional golf when Bob Vokey names a custom wedge grind after you. Vokey’s J Grind was released last year through WedgeWorks, and rumor has it the grind was made specifically for James Hahn. Maybe that’s why we haven’t see the PXG staffer switched out of his Vokey lobber yet?

And check out Jason Day’s custom ATV grind alteration on his TaylorMade Tour Preferred EF wedge, or at least the permanent-marker outline for one. Let’s call this one “All Day.”

Make putters great again

1ce34c7f4e3f3efcead2751445cf6523Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan has been remixed by Bryce Harper to “Make Baseball Fun Again,” and it was only right for a golf club company to run with the quote, as well.

In other news from Axis 1, the company has a new release: Axis 1 Tour putters. Check out more photos of the new putters.

Better come correct

Does Robert Allenby really think a few strips of lead tape will keep the self-proclaimed King of Revealing Photos (that’s me) from recognizing those are Srixon Z745 irons?

It’s really only fair that Jonas Blixt gets custom irons with the colors of Sweden on his Cobra King Forged CB 3-iron, since Cobra designed its entire line of King irons and drivers around Rickie Fowler’s love for orange and black as an Oklahoma State University grad.

I would repaint my Cobra’s to my college colors as that’s an awesome idea, but the college colors are Purple and gold..sooo…yeah, not going to do that.

How about a WITB for Jerry Kelly? What are those Srixon Z MBs? What version are those? They look rounded and not sharp with triangle muscles.

Appears to be Srixon Pro 100 blades stamped to look like Z-series irons.

Game improvement iron as a driving iron? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, one user is sharing details of a recent round in which his playing partner was gaming an…unconventional driving iron.

@AbSWFPGA explained:

“Played with a kid the other day who was a good player and he used a TaylorMade qi max hl 4 iron as a driving iron. He hit it off a lot of tees and it was pretty money. I looked up the 4 iron in that set and it’s 18.5 degrees so that would make for a good driving iron in terms of loft. Has anyone done this and could share some feedback? Thanks”

Our members have been sharing their own perspectives and experiences with unique driving irons in the forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Dave33: “I just got a new set of irons, Ping I540’s, and the 4 iron is 19 degrees. That’s basically as strong as the 2 iron in my 30 yr old custom set its replacing and I used to hit that 2 iron off the tee all the time. The I540 4 iron off the tee is an awesome club. ”
  • Santiago Golf: “I have tried this a few times and they always went too high … Never really the stinger height I was looking for. I got a IDEA Pro style hybrid and it was the perfect mid launching club I was looking for.”
  • DircaDelta: “I basically do this with a JPX 925 Hot Metal Pro 4iron (19 degrees). I tried a few driving irons but honestly this probably fits me best due to the shorter length, but it’s still hot and still has a wide sole which is nice. Great off the tee, turf, and punchy shots to lay-up on par 5s or get out of trouble. It has the same shaft as my irons (Modus 120X) so I could probably get more out of it from a different shaft, but it fits what I need in terms of gapping from my 5 iron (JPX Forged) and gapping and launch from my short 5 wood. I think it’s a good (and often cheaper) route so long as you can find one that suits your eye and gapping needs. I don’t like offset so the HMP’s help in the optics department over a “more typical” game improvement iron.”
