Is this TaylorMade’s new M1 driver?
Images have leaked of what appears to be a new TaylorMade driver, which is rumored to be called the M1.
On Thursday, TaylorMade released a video that teased a new driver release on Oct. 8, telling golfers to “expect the unexpected.”

TaylorMade officials did not confirm the validity of the leaked images, which show a side view, top view, and face view of a 460-cubic-centimeter driver.
The images reveal a two-tone crown design that appears to mix two different materials, presumably titanium and carbon fiber to save weight from the upper, rearward part of the driver head. That would further TaylorMade’s recent design initiative of moving weight lower and more forward in its metal woods to create a higher launch and less spin for more distance.
While there is no image of the sole of the driver, the side-view image shows TaylorMade’s Front Track System, which houses two sliding weights in TaylorMade’s R15 drivers that allows golfers to tune center of gravity (CG) position for more fade or draw.

Welcome to the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
In the last two PGA Championships held at Valhalla, Tiger Woods won in 2000 – when he famously pointed his golf ball into the hole during the historic duel with Bob May – and Rory McIlroy won the 2014 event, basically in the dark on the final hole.
The point is, history shows that Valhalla tends to produce top-tier champions and plenty of drama.
This week at the 2024 PGA Championship, GolfWRX got its first up-close look at what some of the LIV Tour players have in their bags in 2024. We also caught back up with a few PGA Championship legends, such as Rich Beem and John Daly, and we dove into the bags of PGA Sectional qualifiers, too.

1) Brooks Koepka’s new putter
Koepka was previously using a Scotty Cameron T5.5 putter with a slant neck, which he used to win at the beginning of the month in Singapore on the LIV tour. This week, however, he tried a T5.5 with a plumbers neck instead of the slant neck, and it’s immediately going in the bag. According to Scotty Cameron Tour rep Drew Page, Koepka already loved the head, and now finds the plumbers neck a bit more familiar to the blade-style putters he’s used throughout most of his career.
2) The lead tape king returns, with putting goggles
Phil Mickelson has always been one of the GOATs when it comes to lead tape usage, so it was no surprise to see his 64-degree custom Callaway wedge slathered with slabs of lead tape on the back.
The big surprise was that lefty was spotted using ProAim putting training goggles on Wednesday during his warm-up session.
The ProAim goggles are helpful to find center lines and ensure proper alignment to the target.

3) Dobyns’ old-school gamer setup
Speaking of lead tape, check out Matt Dobyn’s old Titleist 718 T-MB irons, which are so loaded with lead tape that the club is nearly unrecognizable.
Respect.
The head professional at Meadow Brook Club is making his sixth start in a PGA Championship, and he’s using a throwback Callaway GBB Epic driver with MOI-boosting lead tape and adjustable weight placements.
As GolfWRX Forum user “InTheBag” pointed out in our Matt Dobyns’ WITB thread, he has the type of setup that makes you want to hide your wallet: “I don’t know Mr. Dobyns, but one look at that bag tells me he can take your money,” writes InTheBag.
Spot on.
4) John Daly’s custom Sub70 irons and wedges
We first saw John Daly using $750 direct-to-consumer Sub70 659-CB irons and TAIII wedges at the 2023 PNC Championship, and he still has them in the bag, but he’s since stepped up the customization on the Sub70 clubs.

5) DJ’s custom putter
Dustin Johnson has always been one to test multiple putters week-to-week, and he has a keen eye for different alignment lines and crowns. This week, he’s opting for a completely gray TaylorMade Spider Tour “T3.0” prototype with a short slant neck.

6) Patrick Reed still rocking GrindWorks irons
Patrick Reed knows his stuff when it comes to equipment, and he’s a prolific tester. Still, however, the GrindWorks PR-101A irons are squarely in the bag after his departure to the LIV tour.
The most notable new addition to Reed’s bag is this Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond 3-wood.

7) Beem’s Scratch set
Rich Beem, who won the 2002 PGA Championship at Hazeltine National, came to the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla with a bag full of Scratch Golf irons, which are loaded with lead tape and equipped with some of the coolest custom ferrules in professional golf.

8) Jon Rahm’s 10-iron
Before going to LIV, Rahm was using a Callaway Apex TCB pitching wedge.
Now, he’s using a Callaway Apex TCB “10 iron.”

9) “Why so serious?”
Tyrrell Hatton, another LIV player in the 2024 PGA Championship field, channels his inner Joker to ask everyone, “Why so serious?”
10) Block’s “Proto” iron, from address
As you probably know by now, Block switched out of his old TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC 2014 irons, and into a full set of TaylorMade’s new “Proto” irons. We’ve already seen the Proto 4-iron in the bags of Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa, but this is our first look at the higher-lofted irons in the set.

Actually, PING G30 has outsold TM this year as the #1 driver. TM has lost market share year over year as they cram way too many models into the market. That is why the M1 “Mother of all Drivers”, originally designed 5years ago was brought back to life. They needed something really significant to win back consumers.

Yeah because the pros clubs are exactly what consumers get? I hope you realize the fault your making… and to clarify, Taylormade is not the number one new sold driver. It depends how you look at it. Yes they sell the most drivers, but over 50% of their annual sales are from closeout or previous models. As far as new club sales, Ping would be number one, followed closely by Callaway.

I don’t mind that TM and some others continue to release new gear…it shows they are still spending a lot on R&D and like to release it to the public. There are early adopters that pay the price every year to get the latest and greatest, and they get bragging rights fwiw. For the rest of us, having the early adopters around to pay up for the latest tech while we wait for the inevitable price drop, helps us get the latest tech right around when the new and latest is announced. Sounds reasonable to me, maybe not such a great business model for TM but that is their issue not mine.

You know when I do anything in live, I don’t think hey is this going to be better for me? I think what is the resale value of this gonna be in a few years. I don’t think hey Im gonna go get fit properly for a driver since I dont hit mine well. I think what is my trade in value going to be in a few years. SHM

I’m actually starting to wonder who the people complaining are. There’s no doubt TM’s gear release is (too) frequent (for some), but this is nothing new. •Are people actually thinking their little “oh another driver from TM”, joke still holds water? •Do these people actually own TM drivers? •If not, are they just sad for other TM owners resale value? If so, that seems weird.
This all seems bizarre to me. (I currently bag a G30, but have had plenty of TM drivers and sold them at completely reasonable prices, I think their drivers a great….not as great as a G30 mind you!)

It all has to do with TM losing sales quarter and quarter and a lot of people, even outside of golf, are saying it has a lot to do with the product life cycle. The R15 for example hasn’t even been out a year yet and here we are with another new one. The product life cycle needs time to mature and sell more clubs to recoup costs. You can’t do that by making a new one every 6 months or so. You have to have a longer period of time. Me, I don’t care about re-sell value, because if I trade in to a new one, I’m already committed to the price of the new one, whether I get 100 or 400 for a trade. However; from a business stand point, the constant new release is not good for profits. So that has a lot of people worried. Has TM learned their lesson yet on quick life cycles? Clearly no they haven’t.

Nothing to to with Release cycles. Callaway has release more and more often and they are in the black. Its all about inventory and real life projections and forecasting. You can release 100 drivers a year if you wanted if you control your inventory appropriately. The release cycle bashing is just that bashing…
Don’t forget you have a choice as a consumer to buy what you want to buy. In fact I would say its your responsibility to research and educate yourself to your purchases and those products. If you don’t then you are to blame. TaylorMade or any other manufacture is not putting a gun to your head to buy anything. Marketing is marketing. Everyone is going to say its the best. Not one company goes out and says its average or mediocre. Hell look at marketing for womens bras. Its either the most comfortable and best supporting or its the most sexy. Its never, this bra will only be good for a few hours or its only going to give you some support.
All the release cycle haters need to grow up and get over it. You are just adding to the negativity of golf.

Guys, stick with manufactures who offer a longer cycle. These manufacturers are clearly comfortable with the knowledge that their equipment will continue to perform for the duration. Titleist and Ping are the clear front runners when it comes to this. The re sale value of their drivers remains relatively high, representing even better value for the consumer. Recent tour victories include players who still use older equipment, the only difference is the quality of the shafts, shafts are the engine in any golf club. Get fitted and get the correct shaft and you should be good to go.

Actually, I believe the only reason why Titleist is on a 2-year cycle now is because they sell enough of their Pro-V balls. If their balls didn’t perform as well, they’d be trying to compete with their clubs but they don’t have to.

Profits from balls alone aren’t enough to drive the business. Titleist has longer cycles because it knows its consumer base better, and it isn’t owned by some big world wide company either like TM is. Titleiest knows clubs aren’t traded in as often so they give their product more shelf life with longer cycles in order to capitalize off of it and minimize any profit loss. Not to mention that it gives them more time to hit their breakeven point. If TM was hitting the breakeven point every 6 months and returning positive sales and profits then everyone would be complaining why Titleist doesn’t follow suite.

Their hard goods sales are flat and their growth is driven by golf balls and soft goods. Facts. I know most on WRX hate them and their inconvenience, but unfortunately they are facts.

Have worked in the industry for 11 years now and agree. Titleist’s business is driven primarily from ball sales. that being said, They also know their market and know they arent going to be the mass producer. I respect their understanding of their fit in the market and that they try to promote their clubs to the competitive amateur and advanced golfers.
For those who are interested, the brands with the highest resale value in golf are, Scotty Cameron, Odyssey, Ping, Callaway and Titleist.
Conicedently, these are the same brands that, despite making minor improvements from time to time, know their technologies, and have a shorter life cycle.

The new 915 125 rogue is the real deal and why most pros use this combo. I find it. Quite hot off the face. Enjoy being in the lake or out of bounds with your TM especially since it’s not the swing but the club apparently. Oh btw I think that’s a penalty.

cool looking is the ony thing TM does in order to sell the 3rd and 4th offering each year. no change in tech just a fancy cool cobra like grafic that ill appeal to alot of people when underneath its almost the same peice of shit they are selling that it real loud and horibly not forgiving. Tour Exotics XCG7 beat the pants of taylormade drivers in robot teting but with no fancy paintjob or cult following, people who only acre what they look like at the range wont bbuy it, they was the aw and looks over performance. you all now who you are, us titleist people or the mizuno blade people are the same way. but with them loosing oney i am curios how thye plan on changing the prt of the addidas company that is bring the whole compay down adn killing stock prices which is taylormade golf.

Love the TM hater comments. Haven’t changed their product all year but yet I don’t see anyone bashing callaway who has come out with how many drivers in the last year? Exactly! Before you start posting comments make sure you do your due diligence and do a little research. You look ignorant.

Head shape looks like nike drivers….has more meat out on toe and shallower in heel area….maybe it’s color scheme doing that, idk….looks good to me but I just know it’s not much different than what’s already out…..no need to drop $450 for something that’s going to do same thing as what I got already

In a strange way, it’s good that the TM release cycle is so short. TM makes a few bucks off the early adopters that are willing to pay the exhorbitant release prices, and the average Joe doesn’t have to wait long for the price to be cut in half as the new latest/greatest “innovation” is announced.

I Like it. Versa alignment for my driver, I stuck with jetspeed and didn’t pull the trigger on R15. Had a guy change grip over on my jetspeed and the club slipped in the vice. He chipped the paint on the head of my beloved jetspeed. GRRR it’s gotta go and this looks like my new driver. Don’t have to choose between black or white, has awesome alignment and hopefully no up charge shafts and this will be mine by years end.

Disclaimer, if you are rather new to the game of golf do not fear you can still shoot in the 70’s with less then $500 drivers and $800 sets of irons..and you can also break 80 with less then $48 a dozen golf balls…….all the fancy high priced golf equipment is out there for you when you get a good job and have nothing better to spend your money on (all High end Country Club members disregard these comments as keeping up on the first tee with the Jones is very important).

Naming it M1 leaves a lot of room for sequels, I’ll bet the price will be in the same range as the new Calloway Bigger Bertha, $500to $600, good luck TM.

Yes This is the new driver. It’s also going to have a weight that moves front to back. They are going for a lighter head due to the TP R15 Swing weights getting out of control

Um….the r15 heads were all under 200gms which is almost 10 lighter than SLDR…at 45″ and a 70gm rogue silver shaft the swing weight is barely D3…and the drivers that are longer get lighter weights from the factory this year….hardly out of control…

Not sure how that is possible. Same 57 gram shaft, same grip and the head is almost 10grams lighter…do the math…

Not only are they all continually releasing new drivers; we are seeing more of this exact innovation. Carbon fiber crowns; weight being moved by the graham to squeeze every last iota of performance out of head design.

I loved that driver so I actually am considering a test drive if this is actually the head profile and an indication that TM is going high end on production materials for non tour stuff…

Looks really sharp. That 2-tone look is similar to some of their spider putters.The sole looks to have better aerodynamics from what I can see next to the rail. Can’t wait to try it in Oct.
