Scott slips, Every wins Arnold Palmer Invitational
In an unexpected finish, Matt Every bested Keegan Bradley and Adam Scott to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational, his first victory on the PGA Tour.
Every, 30, was 4-under through his first 13 holes on Sunday, but he faltered with bogeys on Nos. 16 and 18 to finish at 13-under. That was still one stroke better, however, than runner-up Keegan Bradley.
The real story was the collapse of Adam Scott, the No. 2-ranked player in the Official World Golf Rankings, who with a victory would have vaulted into the No. 1 spot for the first time in his career.
The 2013 Masters Champ stood on the No. 1 tee with a three-shot lead at 15-under on Sunday, but he struggled from the start. He made bogey on the first hole and on two more of the next six holes to let the field back into the tournament. By the time he made it to No. 10, he was tied with Every at 13-under.
The nightmare continued for the 11-time Tour winner when he made two more bogeys coming in, including a three putt for par on the par-5 16th hole that wiped out all his momentum. A birdie would have kept Scott within reach of Every, but it was to no avail. The putter, which was a weapon for Scott in his first two rounds at Bay Hill, became his undoing over the weekend as he missed five putts under 10 feet on the final day.
Late drama was provided by Keegan Bradley, who birdied Nos. 16 and 17 to get within a shot of Every and hit a perfect drive on No. 18 that left him with just 169 yards to the hole. With Every watching on, Bradley hit his 8 iron approach to 28 feet leaving him the famous “Tiger Putt” for a birdie and a sudden-death playoff. Unlike the world No. 1, who has made that putt on more than one occasion, Bradley’s putt slipped by left side of the hole to give Every his first PGA Tour victory.
“I kept telling myself, maybe it’s going to be somewhere special,” Every said about his first win. “This is really cool. I still can’t believe it.”
Every, an alumni of Golf Channel’s Big Break reality television series, moved from No. 31 to No. 7 in FedEx Cup points with the win, and earned his fifth top-10 finish in 11 starts this year.
Other notables in the top-10 included Henrik Stenson and Francesco Molinari (T5), Brandt Snedeker (T8) and Ryo Ishikawa (T8).
Next week the PGA Tour heads to San Antonio, where Martin Laird will defend the Valero Texas Open against a field that will include five-time major champion Phil Mickelson, Every and Jordan Spieth.

If Tiger choked like Scott just did, that would be the story, along with these other headlines: What’s wrong with Tiger? Why is he always dating white women? Did he make a rules violation? Did he eat too much fried chicken?

Anchored putters don’t always fail since he did win the Masters last year with it. Ditto Ernie Els. They are an alternative for struggling putters. What will always be true is that until every one of them are gone from tour play, I’ll always root for the guy without them. Nothing personal against the guy using them, but I think they’re just against the rules and glad they’re on their way out. JMO…

Ignorance by definition is lack of knowledge or information. I believe my comment is informed and correct. A fact even. How is that ignorant? May I suggest you consult a dictionary to check the meaning of the big words you are using before trying to have a go at someone in your posts. Who’s the ignorant one now?
