Reed beats Spieth in a playoff to win the Wyndham Championship

Published

Just two weeks after his 23rd birthday, Patrick Reed defeated 20-year-old Jordan Spieth in a playoff to secure his first PGA Tour victory.

After missing a short birdie putt to beat Spieth on the first playoff hole, Reed hit his tee shot on the second playoff hole into the woods. The ball ended up just shy of the out-of-bounds marker, but Reed found an opening with his 7 iron, hitting his approach shot to 7 feet. After Spieth missed a 10-foot putt for birdie, Reed holed his birdie putt for the win.

The victory earned Reed $954,000 and 500 FedEx Cup points, moving him into 22nd place going into next week’s Barclays. Runner-up Jordan Spieth moved to eighth in the standings and earned his seventh top 10 of the season.

Spieth made things interesting in the final round, with a flawless 31 on the back nine that got him into a tie with Reed at 14-under. On the first playoff hole, Spieth appeared out of it after he hit his tee ball into the woods, leaving himself 25 feet for par. But Spieth holed that putt to put pressure on Reed, which may or may not have influenced Reed’s miss.

Golfweek’s Adam Schupak tweeted this after the round: “@JordanSpieth says caddie Michael Greller told him before the bomb on the 1st playoff hole: “Why not?” Must be nice to have ice in the veins” (sic)

To add to the youth-themed leaderboard, Brian Harman (26) and John Huh (23) finished tied for third.

There was some good sportsmanship shown towards one another in they’re playoff.
