I find the 10.5* Driver & 13* 3metal lofts to be oddly close to each other. Usually a 8 or 9* Driver would be better paired with a strong 3, not having a 2.5* gap. Works for him for now but it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if he subs out his driver or both clubs for different lofts from time to time per course & conditions…and good or bad juju. 😛

The lofts of the wedges also caught me by surprise, being 8* apart but I really dig the 51* & 59* lofts in general!

Quite the bag variety, like mine + 10,000% greater skill than me!

That Piretti putter is money but boy howdy does it rip off the Kirk Curries of old, right down to the milled surfaces. Only difference is the one piece head/neck, more akin to Scotty’s of course. Pretty flatstick tho!

I thought I was the only one still using the golf pride tour wrap cords. The best grip they ever made. They’re getting really difficult to find since they have been discontinued. Do I have to be a tour player to not be stuck with crappy multi-coumpound only last 6 month grips?

I did. Two hours before he won. Great deal. Just to see what it’s all about

Fellow WRXers, I’m pretty up to date on irons, but honestly don’t pay much attention to the OEM Japanese market products. Hoping someone can help me out with the model year of this Legecy Black irons? Are these supposed to be the RAZR X forged version of the US market?

    • JL

      Sep 24, 2013 at 9:16 am

It’s hard to say, since in the European website these are the most up to date, but in Japan it’s a year or two behind. I wouldn’t think these are on par with the RAZR X. These are a more expensive line.

The legacy Black is premium forged at Endo, so top of the line quality. With the smoked finish they look really classy. The one Stenson is using is actually the 2011/12 model, there is already a new Legacy Black iron out in Japan/Asia. They are not sold in the US because they are too expensive for the typical US golfer to consider.

I believe he may have a small deal with Taylormade for playing the driver. They have been all about pushing out congrats to him. Their tweets are usually reserved to staff members, so I’m guessing he’s on board, albeit a small deal.

Notice how he did not use the SLDR driver to win this? He stuck with hiw Callaway Diablo for the win because he could not hit the driver worth a damn, wonder if anyone else noticed this?

      • Tim

        Sep 23, 2013 at 12:38 pm

Noticed that to. No SLDR. I didn’t see him use it once on Sunday. When you’re hitting a 3 wood 300yds, why would you need a ‘driver’.

          Sep 23, 2013 at 1:18 pm

He used it on one hole actually :p

When you extend a 3w half an inch & it’s 13*, combined with his swing, it’s not surprising in the least he hits it 300yds. I’m sure there are several guys on tour that could do the same when wielding the same club specs, hence Lefty’s no-driver Open win.

Wow, million dollar question is will he change any of that…??? Also, just how old is the “blue” shaft…is there an updated version or is this the old standby?

    Sep 22, 2013 at 1:54 pm

His 3 wood and 5 wood are only .5 inches long? Wow, they look longer to me.

    • Anthony

      Sep 23, 2013 at 8:00 am

The post says +0.5″ so no they’re obviously not simply half an inch long. Why are people so hellbent on bashing these WITB posts?

    Sep 22, 2013 at 5:58 am

He had a SLDR driver with a white shaft.

And the legacy black is a cavity forged signed Roger Cleveland. Looks nice. Was it ever released outside Japan?

    • christian

      Sep 23, 2013 at 3:44 am

Yes, in Asia. It’s available here in Thailand where I live at the moment. I’ve been eyeing them for a while now.

With his mix of TM, Cally, and Cleveland parts, I am guessing he doesn’t have a deal with any of them. At most a limited club contract like mentioned by above. The callaway legacy blacks actually look really nice. Specifically the newest japanese version. Although it’s very expensive. I think he ones he is playing are the european versions.

Sure those are legacy black? If so, I take it they are being skinned with RAZR X badging or those are old images?

    • Jack

      Sep 2, 2013 at 9:56 pm

Looks like you don’t frequent these WITB enough, as yes they do mix new and old pics. I think they tried to clean it up, but probably don’t have resources allocated to do so. This has been complained about many times in the past BTW.

No, I frequent these all the time, just thought it was egregious enough this time to chime in 🙂

          Ben,

Stenson did indeed play the Callaway Legacy Black Irons at TPC Boston.

Zak- do you have any insight when he switched to the Legacy irons vs. Razr Tours? It appears that he uses some of the more forgiving irons.

Also, is Stenson currently signed by a specific manufacturer? I thought I saw a Callaway logo on the back of his hat but couldn’t tell for sure.

            • Zak Kozuchowski

              Sep 3, 2013 at 12:03 pm

The Legacy irons are more compact and less forgiving. Maybe the looked and/or felt better?

Stenson is endorsed by Piretti, a putter manufacturer. He carries a staff bag with the company’s name on it. Can’t be certain about a limited club contract with Callaway or tee up money for his driver, wedges, golf ball, etc.

The Legacy series are not that compact, pretty GI. The legacy BLACK however is a bit more compact with less offset, a players CB. JDM stuff. If he was on a full sponsorship with Callaway he probably would not be allowed to play these forged JDM beauties.

I saw him use a Callaway x hot 5 wood this week

Yessir, and Callaway’s clubs in general are solid, I also think they have great golf balls as well! It’s also nice to see him use Cleveland wedges which are the best of the best. He sure used his clubs to his advantage by winning this great tournament 🙂
