Fowler follows in Woodland’s footsteps with driver swap

Published

on

It seems that Rickie Fowler has influenced Gary Woodland’s bag setup this season. The pair potentially have bounced equipment ideas off each other. Woodland’s equipment make-up currently features the custom high-offset Cleveland wedge, designed initially for Fowler, along with the same switch in putters, going from a low-torque flatstick to a center-shafted Scotty Cameron GoLo putter.

Now it looks like Fowler is following in Woodland’s footsteps. At the RBC Heritage, Fowler has switched drivers, changing from his Cobra OPTM X and into the Tour, low-loft Max K model that Gary Woodland used to win just a few weeks ago.

The new model in Fowler’s bag still features UST Mamiya LIN-Q PowerCore White 6TX shaft.

It’s no surprise that Fowler is testing the new head out, though, after talking with Cobra Tour Rep Ben Schomin.

This is an interesting and good story,” Schomin told GolfWRX. “By mid-December last year, we had him fit very well into OPTM LS, X and Max K. I think that’s a strong testament to our new lineup.”

Schomin added, “He had three distinct drivers and the biggest decision was trying to decide which worked best at that time. He’s played the majority of the season with OPTM X, but has also played a couple of tournaments with OPTM LS. His overall driving stats have been good.”

Fowler, who’s made 6 of 8 cuts this season, with his best finish on the PGA Tour coming at the last Signature Event, a T9 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, currently sits 18th in Total Driving. It’s the best return he’s seen in the stat since 2018. So why the change?

Well, according to Schomin, “(Rickie) has confidence in all 3 and wants to test drive their performance on the track.”

With the lack of a driver really needed around Harbour Town, and the potential to hit it on only a few tee balls around the short but tight setup, it might just be the best place to “test drive” a new big stick.

Spotted: Titleist GTS USWO headcovers

Published

on

GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore was at Riviera Country Club this last week in Los Angeles for the U.S. Women’s Open. While browsing the photos, I spotted a recent major trend in headcovers. That is, the Titleist GTS headcover line expands the majors theme.

Seen on the bag of Natalia Guseva were the red, white, and blue Titleist GTS covers. This is the third time we have seen limited-edition Titleist major covers, the others being at the Masters and the PGA Championship. But with the launch of the GTS line back at the Texas Children’s Houston Open in March, this is the first time we have seen Titleist come out with major themed head covers for the season (driver headcovers through hybrids).

Check out some photos below.

At the Masters, we saw the familiar Masters green, white, and yellow. While the PGA Championship design was colors synonymous with the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team. This shows the season major drops continue full steam ahead for major OEMs. New opportunities for each major for designs and themes, and who knows, maybe a lucky spark for a player and a major championship for their resume. It gets the wheels turning for what major theme headcover you would keep on your bag for the whole season!
