Tiger Woods’ ‘Actual Back Up’ Scotty Cameron putter sells for monstrous amount at auction

The bidding for Tiger Woods’ “Actual Back Up” Scotty Cameron Putter” has ended.
Bidding opened on November 3rd at 5:00 p.m. and ran until November 18th at 10:30 p.m. and was held by Golden Age Auctions, with the final sale price being recorded as $267,865.20.
The item came with a description from the company which read:
“Oh do we have a story to tell. We’d heard about this legendary “actual backup” putter, and the story surrounding it, many years ago. This putter originates from Rand Pallis, the longtime Scotty Cameron distributor and super collector, who received this putter directly from Scotty Cameron himself. It then traded hands privately a couple years ago for an amount that made it one of the most expensive pieces of golf memorabilia in history. But now, it finally reaches the auction block, and its story can finally be shared with the masses.
So here we go…
Tiger Woods’ coveted backup putters are usually issued a Scotty Cameron Certificate of Authenticity with the generic nomenclature of “Made for Tiger.” As legend has it, Tiger Woods has only used a single red dot Scotty Cameron putter in tournament play – his famous gamer that is Tiger’s prized possession and worth upwards of $10 million.
But what if that weren’t entirely true…
Without further ado, we bring to you what we have dubbed Tiger’s “Secret Gamer.”
As the (admittedly unconfirmed) story that follows this putter goes, Tiger Woods once, during a moment of frustration, caused damage to his famous red dot gamer. The putter was rushed to Scotty Cameron to perform the necessary repairs. During the few days it was out of Tiger’s possession, he was forced to put another red dot putter into play – supposedly the very red dot putter offered in this auction.
To be clear, this story may never be confirmed by the parties involved, but it is a story that has fascinated us for years. And when Rand Pallis sent this putter back to Scotty Cameron in 2015 for a Certificate of Authenticity, the COA came back with the curious (and important) description of Tiger Woods’ “Very rare actual backup putter.” Scotty Cameron deliberately chose to indicate that this was no ordinary backup putter made for Tiger Woods, but instead was Tiger’s actual backup putter. If true, this putter may one day become the first Scotty Cameron putter to eclipse the $1 million mark.
This putter bears a striking similarity to Tiger Woods’ trusty gamer, including the blacked-out rubber PING grip, blank tri-sole, thin top line, and soft rounded heel and toe. We spoke to one prominent Scotty Cameron collector who said it is his understanding that 7 or so genuine Tiger red dot “backups” exist, including the offered putter. When another well-regarded collector was asked whether a Tiger backup will sell for $1 million one day, his response was “100%.”
The Tiger Woods putter came with a certificate of authenticity from Scotty Cameron.
