Good Thursday morning, golf fans, as day one of the RSM Classic gets underway.

1. CME Group Tour Championship pumps up purse, extends sponsorship

Field Level Media report…”The season-ending CME Group Tour Championship will have an $11 million purse, an increase from previous years, and a record $4 million winner’s check in 2024, the LPGA Tour announced Wednesday.”

  • “The runner-up for next year’s event in Naples, Fla., will receive $1 million, with every competitor in the 60-player field earning at least $55,000.”
  • Additionally…”The CME Group has extended its sponsorship of the Tour Championship through 2025.”

2. Zhang ready for a break

Golf Channel’s Amy Rogers…”On the eve of the CME Group Tour Championship, Zhang admits to feeling fatigued, in need of a break, and says the biggest lesson she’s learned in her first six months on the LPGA has been realizing there are times she needs to say ‘no.’”

  • “I feel like energy-wise we’re yearning for a little bit more of just that little break. I just hope to end the year off with the best efforts I can put out on the golf course,” Zhang said Wednesday. “I’m definitely taking a little bit more of a break in the beginning of the year before starting off the rest of the season with plenty of golf tournaments to play.”
  • “The Tour Championship will be one of the last events Zhang plays until the spring. She’s no longer listed in the field at the Grant Thornton Invitational in December and says she plans to return to classes at Stanford in the first quarter of the new year, which begins in January and runs through March.”

3. Dome down: Air-supported covering of TGL venue collapses

Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard…”The dome over SoFi Center, the custom-built South Florida complex that will host the inaugural TGL season, collapsed Tuesday evening, the league confirmed in a statement.”

  • “An overnight failure to the temporary power system used during the construction phase caused partial deflation and limited damage to the air-supported dome section of the site. The dome section has been further deflated by our crew and will remain down while they work to remedy the situation,” the statement read.

4. Team Thomas-Sainz takes Netflix Cup

Reuters report…”Justin Thomas and Formula One driver Carlos Sainz were the first winners in the Netflix Cup, which had quite a bit going on in this first-of-a-kind event Tuesday at Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas.”

  • “…Thomas and Sainz defeated the tandem of Tony Finau and Pierre Gasly in the closest-to-pin contest on the final hole after the four-team field was cut in half following eight holes of match play.”
  • “The competition qualified as silly at times, but the spectators lining the course to watch seemed to find it entertaining.”
Full piece.

5. “No chance” Rahm replaces Rory on policy board

Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine…”Rahm was asked for his reaction to McIlroy’s abrupt resignation as a player director during his pre-tournament press conference Wednesday in Dubai, where he’s competing in the DP World Tour’s finale. The 29-year-old Spaniard said he didn’t expect the news, and he didn’t waste any time in shutting down the possibility of him taking the position before anyone could ask a follow-up.”

  • “Oh, you won’t see me there,” Rahm said. “Absolutely no chance. I’ve been asked a couple times if I have any interest, and I’m not going to spend, I don’t know how many meetings they have, but they are six, seven, hour plus long. I’m not here for that.”
Full piece.

6. Mickelson thorny in memo response

Our Matt Vincenzi…”After seeing the memo, Phil Mickelson took to social media to have his say on the changes that we are currently seeing on the PGA Tour.”

  • “What an amazing change of philosophy in 2 years. “If it’s not 100% owned and controlled by the PGA Tour it will be viewed as hostile.” Ed Herlihy and Jay Monahan October 30, 2021. Thank you LIV, PIF, His Excellency and all the players willing to stand up to Jay’s threats and disparagement to force positive change.”
Full piece.

7. Hovland, wholesome as ever

Our Matt Vincenzi…”This week, Viktor Hovland will be teeing it up at the DP World Tour Championship. During his pre-tournament press conference, he was asked what he’s spent his $34.5 million earnings on from this year.”

  • “Nothing, not necessarily materialistic thing but I took my Mum on a nice trip to Malta and we went there hung out and ate good food and checked out some places and site see’d a little bit so that’s the stuff that’s cool.”
  • “The Norwegian had a fantastic season, winning the Memorial Tournament, the BMW Championship and the TOUR Championship.”
  • “Hovland’s answer is another example of why he is one of the most well-liked golfers in the world.”

8. Herman drops case against Tiger

Our Matt Vincenzi…”Tiger Woods’ ex-girlfriend, Erica Herman, has dropped her lawsuit against the 15-time major champion. She also dropped her appeal to the NDA she had signed when beginning her relationship with Woods.”

  • “Back in May, Florida judge Elizabeth Metzger heard Herman’s case to have the non-disclosure agreement nullified and determined that there was no evidence or any sexual harassment or abuse and therefore states that the non-disclosure agreement must be honored.
  • “The judge gave an 11-page ruling and said the implication of sexual misconduct was “vague and threadbare”.

Morning 9: Monahan: Pleased with progress | Rory resigns from PGA Tour Policy Board

Published

on

By Ben Alberstadt with Gianni Magliocco.

For comments: [email protected]

Good Wednesday morning, golf fans, as we gear up for the RSM Classic.

1. Monahan: “Pleased with progress” at policy board meeting

PGATour.com staff report…”Commissioner Monahan also wrote in Tuesday’s memo that the PGA TOUR remains focused on negotiations toward a Definitive Agreement with the PIF and the DP World Tour after a Framework Agreement between the parties was reached June 6. Commissioner Monahan said the TOUR remains focused on the negotiations but characterized the progress as “deliberate,” citing the complex nature of the negotiations.”

  • “The Framework Agreement also generated what Commissioner Monahan described as “unsolicited, but unsurprising” interest from outside investors, and several of those proposals were reviewed Monday by the Independent Directors and Player Directors, with input from Allen & Co., the TOUR’s investment bank, and The Raine Group. The potential final minority investor or investors will be selected “in a timely manner,” Commissioner Monahan wrote.”
  • “Maintaining and growing comprehensive player earnings is one of several criteria the TOUR is using in evaluating investors’ proposals. TOUR management also has designed a potential program that would award players equity in the newly formed PGA TOUR Enterprises.”
  • “This would be a unique offering in professional sports, as no other league grants its players/members direct equity ownership in the league’s business,” Commissioner Monahan wrote. “We recognize – as do all of the prospective minority investors who are in dialogue with us – that the PGA TOUR will be stronger with our players more closely aligned with the commercial success of the business.”
Full piece.

2. New board member

ESPN’s Mark Schlabach…”The tour also announced that Joseph W. “Joe” Gorder, executive chairman of Valero Energy Corporation, has been unanimously approved to replace former independent director Randall Stephenson on the policy board.”

  • “Stephenson, a former AT&T chairman, resigned in protest over the PIF deal.”
  • “I am honored to be joining the PGA Tour Policy Board,” Gorder said in a statement. “I’ve truly enjoyed my engagement with the PGA TOUR through the Valero Texas Open, and I am excited to step into this role for the PGA TOUR and its members, as we continue to cultivate growth and success for this proud organization, its passionate fanbase and its engaged communities.”
Full piece.

3. McIlroy: “Loose lips sink ships”

Via BBC’s Ian Carter…”The bids were discussed by the tour earlier this week, but details are scarce. “I think if you were in the middle of it, you would see that there’s a path forward,” McIlroy said.”

  • “It’s just that no one on the outside has any details. Loose lips sink ships, so we are trying to keep it tight and within walls. I’m sure when there’s news to tell, it will be told.”
  • “More from McIlroy…”I think getting something done sooner rather than later is a good thing,” McIlroy said.”
  • “Because you know, even if we get a deal done, it doesn’t mean that it’s actually going to happen.
  • “That’s up to the United States government at that point, and whether the Department of Justice think that it’s the right thing to do or whether anti-competitive or whatever.
  • “Even if a deal does get done, it’s not a sure thing. So yeah, we are just going to have to wait and see. But in my opinion, the faster something gets done, the better.”
Full piece.

4. Jin Young Ko slated for MRI on knee

Amy Rogers for Golf Channel…”Jin Young Ko will be playing through injury for the third straight year at the CME Group Tour Championship.”

  • “Tuesday at Tiburon Golf Club, the two-time Tour Championship winner was seen wearing a brace on her left knee in preparation for the final event of the LPGA season. Ko declined to talk, but her team told GolfChannel.com that the former world No. 1 suffered a knee injury at The Annika and that she began experiencing pain on the fifth hole during the first round of last week’s event. Ko purchased a knee brace on Monday and wore it during Tuesday’s nine-hole practice round and during her time on the practice putting green. Ko’s team said she’s experiencing discomfort when she both walks and swings.”
Full piece.

5. McIlroy “probably” putting a new driver in play

GolfWRX report…”Ergo, McIlroy would relish the opportunity to see if he could level up his off-the-tee game even further (the Ulsterman was second in strokes gained: off the tee in 2022-2023).”

  • “It’s anything but surprising, then, that McIlroy has been practicing with the club and told the DP World Tour social media team, “You’ll probably see a new driver in the bag this week.”
  • “I still want to go out there and try to win the golf tournament, but it could be a good time to test it out in competition,” McIlroy said of the new TaylorMade Qi10 LS driver.
  • “We’ll have to wait until Thursday’s opening round at Jumeirah Golf Estates to see if McIlroy does in fact put the club through its competitive paces.”
Full piece.

6. Chris Kirk given Courage Award

PGATour.com staff report…”The PGA TOUR announced Tuesday that Chris Kirk has been named the recipient of the PGA TOUR Courage Award.”

  • “Kirk, 38, took a leave of absence from the TOUR in May of 2019 to address issues of alcohol abuse and depression. He returned to the TOUR later that year after a break of more than six months, regained exempt status in 2021 through a Major Medical Extension, and in 2023 earned his fifth PGA TOUR title and first since 2015.”
  • “I didn’t really feel like I was going to play golf again much less be here with all of you and to have won again on the TOUR. I’m really just blown away,” Kirk said Tuesday after receiving the award at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia, where he is playing this week’s RSM Classic. “I’m beyond thankful for my family, especially for Tahnee for staying with me and supporting me through these difficult years. I just am so blessed and thankful to currently live a life better than I could have ever imagined. Just the mental clarity that I wake up with every day is an absolute blessing and a gift.

7. Rory resigns from PGA Tour Policy Board

Adam Woodard for Golfweek…”Rory McIlroy resigned from his position on the PGA Tour Policy Board on Tuesday ahead of the Tour’s final event of 2023, the PGA Tour has confirmed to Golfweek. The news was first reported by the New York Times.”

  • “McIlroy, 34, has been the Tour’s most vocal advocate in the two years since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and LIV Golf joined the scene and has also spent considerable time in leadership positions with the Tour. The four-time major champion was a member of the Player Advisory Council from 2019-21 and served as the PAC Chairman in 2021. For the last two years, he has been a Player Director on the Policy Board.”

8. Justin Thomas and Carlos Sainz win Netflix Cup

Reuters report…”Pro golfer Justin Thomas and Formula One driver Carlos Sainz were the first winners in the Netflix Cup, which had quite a bit going on in this first-of-a-kind event Tuesday at Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas.”

  • “The duo hoisted the Cup together in the postmatch ceremony, with Thomas then drinking from the Cup. Then Sainz had his turn, and he dropped the trophy, which broke.”
  • “Thomas and Sainz defeated the tandem of Tony Finau and Pierre Gasly in the closest-to-pin contest on the final hole after the four-team field was cut in half following eight holes of match play.”

Morning 9: Phil aids pro | Rory details Ryder Cup rage | Tiger falls to career-low ranking

Published

on

By Ben Alberstadt with Gianni Magliocco.

For comments: [email protected]

Good Tuesday morning, golf fans, as we gear up for the RSM Classic.

1. Mickelson aids pro with Q-School prep

Our Matt Vincenzi…”Phil Mickelson has taken a lot of heat over the past few years. Whether it be his unpopular move to LIV Golf after calling the Saudi’s “scary mother fu*****” to author Alan Shipnuck, or the story from the famous gambler Billy Walters that Phil bet close to a billion dollars over the course of a decade, it’s been an endless sea of negative headlines.”

  • “However, over the weekend, Mickelson went above and beyond to help an aspiring PGA Tour player, as shared by “Monday Q Info” on X.”
  • “After the first stage of Q-school I sent @PhilMickelson a DM, asking him to help @markbaldwin1 get ready for 2nd stage. I didn’t tell Mark because I never thought phil would respond. Instead, 3 hours later Phil said yes. And this weekend Mark has had “the coolest experience.”
  • “I cannot explain how hard this was to not tweet about over the last two weeks. I wanted to respect Phil’s privacy and although obv great content the goal was for Mark to get ready for Q-School so I didn’t want to cause any distractions, and that is Phil’s backyard.”
Full piece.

2. Rory raged

Our Matt Vincenzi…”While doing an interview with the “Irish Independent“, Rory McIlroy shared some more details regarding the argument he had with Joe LaCava at the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone.”

  • “The altercation stemmed from a report that indicated Patrick Cantlay was not wearing a hat during play as a protest for not getting paid during the Ryder Cup. After he drilled a clutch putt in the match against McIlroy, the United States team all waved their hat in support of Cantlay. LaCava joined in while on the green and according to McIlroy, went on a bit too long.”
  • “Here’s what angered me, my relationship with Cantlay is average at best. We don’t have a ton in common and see the world quite differently.
  • “But when I saw he was getting stick on the 17th and 18th greens, I tried to quieten the crowd for him. And I don’t think Fitz and I were afforded the same opportunity to try and hole those putts to halve the match.
  • “I hit a decent putt but I under-read it basically, and Fitz hit a good putt but left it short, right in the jaws.”
  • “I shook Joe’s hand, and Patrick’s hand. Those three putts he made on 16, 17 and 18 were fantastic, and under that pressure, to give your team a glimmer of hope going into Sunday was big balls. So, all respect to him.
  • “There was a bit of argy-bargy at the back of the 18th green with Fred Couples and Thomas Bjorn – and that’s fine – but as I’m walking back to the locker room I can feel this red mist coming over me: ‘No! That wasn’t right.”
  • “As we’re getting up to leave I’m like, ‘I’m going into their locker room now to sort this out, and Shane was like, ‘No Rory. Bad idea.’”
Full piece.

3. More TGL team members announced

PGATour.com report…”Atlanta Drive Golf Club (GC) announced Monday that Patrick Cantlay, currently the fifth-ranked player in the world, seven-time PGA TOUR winner Billy Horschel and six-time PGA TOUR winner Lucas Glover have joined the team representing Atlanta in TGL, the new tech-forward, primetime team golf league developed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TMRW Sports in partnership with the PGA TOUR.”

  • “The trio joins Justin Thomas to complete the inaugural Atlanta Drive GC roster.”
  • “This is a special day for Atlanta Drive GC and AMB Sports and Entertainment,” said Dick Sullivan, CEO, PGA TOUR Superstore and executive overseeing Atlanta Drive GC. “With these elite players joining Justin Thomas as the members of our team, we have put together a player roster that illustrates what we want Atlanta Drive GC to be – competitive, consistent and always in contention to win.”
Full piece.

4. Twins tee it up at RSM

Paul Hodowanic for PGATour.com…”There’s a unique bond between the brothers centered around a shared dream: Playing on the PGA TOUR. Each was a highly-touted junior golfer recruited by top Division I schools. They briefly veered off their inseparable path, choosing different colleges before Maxwell transferred after two seasons at the University of Georgia and joined David at North Carolina. Both have remained tantalizing prospects. David ranks fifth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Maxwell ranks 30th.”

  • “Now, they’ll get the first taste of their dream. Both are in the field at The RSM Classic. They are the third pair of twins to compete on TOUR this season. Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard competed at The Open Championship while Pierceson and Parker Coody both played The Honda Classic.”
  • “David qualified for the event by winning the 2023 Jones Cup, a prestigious amateur event held annually at Sea Island Golf Club in January. Former winners include Justin Thomas, Ludvig Åberg, Akshay Bhatia and Corey Conners.”
  • “Maxwell initially hoped to play his way in through the Monday qualifier but received a sponsor’s exemption shortly before the event.”
Full piece.

5. How Gordon Sargent bombs it

Golf Digest’s Luke Kerr-Dineen…”The truth is there’s no one reason why a golfer can hit a ball 380 yards. Sargent does lots of things well in his golf swing which give him his unbelievable speed. But perhaps the key move in his golf swing comes right here, at the top of his backswing.”

  • “Look closely and you’ll see as his hands and arms complete his backswing, his hips begin unwinding towards the target.”
  • “It’s a small movement, but this helps Sargent create an incredible amount of torque, which he uses to create such incredible speed.”
  • “The reason why is because of a concept called X-Factor, a really innovative breakthrough that was created and popularized by the legendary teacher Jim McClean.”
Full piece.

6. Berkshire on record-breaking blast

Craig Dolch for the Palm Beach Post…”While having lunch in Bear Lakes’ new clubhouse last week, Berkshire reflected on that moment.”

  • “When I caught that ball, I knew it was the hardest ball I hit,” said Berkshire, a 27-year-old Orlando resident who is known for his long dark hair. “It was also spinning enough to stay in the air with a tailwind. With the wind coming off the right, I had a 10-yard-wide window where the ball would carry into the fairway. It felt amazing.”
  • “Berkshire understands most golf fans focus on the yardage of his drives, but he and his peers use the ball speed coming off their extended drivers as the true barometer of their talent. Berkshire set a world record with a ball speed of 241.6 mph.”
Full piece.

7. Woodland hitting balls after brain surgery

Gabrielle Herzig for SI…”On Sept. 18, Gary Woodland’s family updated his followers that his brain surgery and tumor removal was successful. The news was a relief, but it was still unclear when fans would see the U.S. Open champion swinging again.”

  • “Now, less than two months after the procedure, Woodland is not only holding a club, but it appears that he is gearing up for a return to competition in the coming year.
  • “This journey has been very hard but I’m extremely thankful to be progressing and for the unconditional love and support from everyone,” Woodland wrote on Instagram. “You’ve all made this process a little easier for me and my family. Thank you to everyone and I look forward to seeing you all next year.”

Morning 9: Villegas a winner again | Homa victorious at Nedbank | Ko ends poor season early

Published

on

By Ben Alberstadt with Gianni Magliocco.

For comments: [email protected]

Good Monday morning, golf fans, as Camilo Villegas returned to the winner’s circle on Sunday at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

1. Camilo concludes 9-year drought

Golfweek’s Adam Woodard…”After a grueling 3,374 days, Camilo Villegas is once again a winner on the PGA Tour.”

  • “The 41-year-old shot a 6-under 65 in the final round on Sunday at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda, to win the 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship at 24 under by two shots over Alex Noren (68). The win is the fifth of Villegas’ PGA Tour career and first since the 2014 Wyndham Championship.”
  • “Entering the week Villegas had missed seven cuts across 11 starts on Tour this season but did earn a T-2 at last week’s 2023 World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico.”
Full piece.

2. Homa wins in South Africa

AP report…”Homa shot a 6-under 66 to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa on Sunday for his first win abroad.”

  • “Homa finished at 19 under for the tournament, four shots ahead of Nicolai Hojgaard to add to his six PGA TOUR career titles.”
  • “Homa secured the win with a final round that included six birdies, an eagle and two bogeys. He pulled away at the top after consecutive birdies on the 15th and 16th holes, where he drained a 38-footer on the par 3.”
Full piece.

3. Alker wins Schwab Cup

AP report…” Steven Alker had to get up-and-down for par on the last three holes for a 1-under 70 that allowed him to hang on and win the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on Sunday and a payoff of just over $1 million.”

  • “Alker won the Schwab Cup a year ago. This time he did the next best thing.”
  • “Steve Stricker clinched the season points list before the postseason began. By winning at Phoenix Country Club, Alker finished second in the Schwab Cup for a $500,000 bonus. The 52-year-old from New Zealand won $528,000 for the tournament, his seventh title on the PGA Tour Champions.”
Full piece.

4. Lilia Vu takes The Annika

AP report…”Lilia Vu seized momentum early with three birdies and closed with a 4-under 66 to win The Annika on Sunday for her fourth victory of 2023, allowing the American to regain the No. 1 ranking in the race for LPGA player of the year.”

  • “Vu started the final round at Pelican Golf Club 3 shots behind Emily Kristine Pedersen, opened with three birdies in six holes and then pulled away with crisp approach shots that set up back-to-back birdies to pull away.”
Full piece.

5. “He’s moving stuff!” Rule face-off at Hong Kong Open

Golf Channel’s Brentey Romine…”It took a minute or so for Khongwatmai to locate his Callaway ball. Upon finding it, and with a rules official watching, Khongwatmai and his caddie worked to remove a large, dead tree branch from his intended area of play and later a smaller branch closer to the ball. This took about 15 minutes, as Campbell repeatedly argued that Khongwatmai and his caddie were breaking and moving other foliage while extracting the dead stuff.”

  • “He’s moving stuff all around it!” Campbell yelled, motioning toward a big clump of green vines in front of Khongwatmai’s ball. “How is this green? This is obviously living.”
  • “Campbell eventually says, “I think we’re going to need to get another official.”
  • “At that point, Khongwatmai claps back at Campbell and Smith: “You guys happy? If you’re not happy I’m not going to do it.”
  • “As Khongwatmai and his caddie continued to trudge around in the brush, there were several sounds of what appeared to be branches and such snapping and crunching, causing Campbell to again yell, “He’s just broken those branches there!”
Full piece.

6. Ogletree to return to LIV

Matt Cradock for Golf Monthly…”Along with the New Zealander, there was also success for Andy Ogletree, who has booked his spot on the 2024 LIV Golf League.”

  • “The American, who infamously played in the first LIV Golf tournament at Centurion in 2022 and finished dead last, was dropped from the circuit for that year and was left without anywhere to play. However, the 25-year-old found his place on the Asian Tour and, after a run of excellent results, he finds himself top of the International Series Order of Merit and back with full playing rights on the LIV Golf circuit for 2024.“
Full piece.

7. McIlroy wins Race to Dubai (prior to DP World Tour Championship)

Jimmy Reinman for PGATour.com…”Rory McIlroy is the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai champion once again. McIlroy’s fifth season-long Race to Dubai title was awarded on points Sunday at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa after Max Homa secured his first international victory.”

  • “Homa’s win set the stage for McIlroy, 34, to claim his fifth European season-long championship, ensuring that the world No. 2 Northern Irishman cannot be caught by Jon Rahm, who ranks No. 2 on the Race to Dubai into next week’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship.”
Full Piece.

8. Ko ends season early

Beth Ann Nichols for Golfweek…”Lydia Ko’s 10th season on the LPGA has come to an end. The woman who swept the postseason awards last year at the CME Group Tour Championship won’t be in the field to defend her title in Naples, Florida. The former phenom’s glorious comeback campaign flamed out in 2023.”

  • “For all the out-of-the-blue success stories on the LPGA this year, Ko’s struggles are by far the most shocking development. Winless on the LPGA this season, Ko finished 101st on the CME points list. While the top 100 keep their fulls cards for next year, Ko can use her winner’s status to get into plenty of events next year.”
