TaylorMade debuts MG4 wedges with Spin Tread technology
TaylorMade today announced the latest iteration of its Milled Grind wedges: TaylorMade MG4, which we spotted a few months back on the PGA Tour. Rory McIlroy presently has the wedges in play, as does Collin Morikawa.
What’s new in the fourth generation of Milled Grind? Most significantly: grooves. TaylorMade engineers are hanging their hats on all-new, tire-inspired Spin Tread technology, in which deep laser etching between the grooves offers an escape route for moisture in wet conditions. When combined with a raw face, this results in more spin and a more controlled launch, according to the company.
“This is a major step forward in the progression of the Milled Grind family. With MG4 we have evolved our approach to wet spin and developed an all-new Spin Tread technology. We use a laser etching treatment to create face roughness, which translates to better friction and moisture channeling for optimal ball control, especially on partial shots.” – Bill Price, TaylorMade’s Senior Director of Product Creation, Putter & Wedge
TaylorMade MG4 wedges: Additional features
Increased flange thickness: Engineers refined the geometry to improve sound and feel on shots struck across the face.
Improved looks, shaping: Inspired by tour player feedback, the reshaped top line, more rounded leading edge, and hosel blend more smoothly and look more “full.” Additionally, the finish features a slightly darker tint that is designed to look better with the oxidizing raw face.
As with the previous generation MG3 wedges, the MG4 wedge faces are raw, and soles are fully machined.
“The feel component is a significant factor. By replacing the chrome-plated face with raw finishes early in the Milled Grind evolution, we were able to influence spin and also enhance the overall feel of the wedge. Adding our reconstructed backbar, with more weight positioned directly behind the strike zone, allows us to help players achieve their desired shot trajectories and spin rates with premium feel and confidence.” – Greg Cesario, TaylorMade Wedge Design Team
TaylorMade MG4 grinds
In addition to the standard three bounce options available in previous generations — low bounce (LB), standard bounce (SB) and high bounce (HB) — TaylorMade is offering alternative options within each category for the MG4 wedges.
Grinds below with details via TaylorMade.
- Low Bounce (LB): Low leading edge for added versatility and shot making in firm conditions.
- Low Bounce V (LBV): Designed for skilled players with a shallow attack angle, offering exceptional spin and the ability to manipulate face angles effectively.
- Standard Bounce (SB): All-around performance that prevents excessive digging and allows the clubhead to glide through the turf smoothly.
- Standard Bounce C (SBC): Provides increased versatility for players who prefer to manipulate face angles, without compromising bounce performance.
- High Bounce (HB): TaylorMade’s standard high bounce design is playable for skilled golfers and defies the convention that high bounce wedges are only for high handicappers. In fact, Rory McIlroy uses a HB 60° Milled Grind 4 depending on course conditions.
- High Bounce Wide (HBW): With an increased sole width, this high bounce option offers improved playability and excels in sand play.
- Tiger Woods Grind (TW): Offered in 56° and 60° lofts, each sole on the MG4 TW was inspired by Tiger’s grind. The 56° wedge is a dual sole with heavy heel relief, while the 60° has an extremely high bounce on the leading edge with a shaved heel. Designed to be supremely versatile, these unique grinds allow Tiger to take on any shot, on any course, anywhere in the world.

Cobra launches 3D-printed LIMIT3D irons
Cobra released its first commercially available 3D-printed steel putter in 2020. Now, the company is bringing its first 3D-printed irons to retail with new LIMIT3D irons, which Cobra’s vice president of product architecture, Jose Miraflor, calls “the most significant technological advancement to happen to the category in the past 20 years” and “a look into the future of golf club design and performance.”
Cobra leveraged the expertise of computational design software firm nTop to create an ambitious design: a compact players blade that offers similar forgiveness as a larger, game-improvement style club and forged iron feel.
Speaking on the partnership, Mike Yagley, Vice President of Innovation & AI, Cobra Golf said, “nTop’s computational design tools integrated with 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, allowed us to create an incredible new design that looks and feels like a forged blade but performs like a larger, game-improvement iron. No one has done this before, and we’re excited to introduce these unique irons to the world.”
As Cobra explains, more forgiving irons are traditionally larger and sacrifice feel. Due to the limitations of casting and forging, creating a more compact, better-feeling iron that still delivers forgiveness was only possible with 3D printing. The resulting profile of Cobra’s LIMIT3D irons is smaller than Cobra’s King Tour irons.
LIMIT3D irons are 3D printed for 316L stainless steel with an internal lattice structure, which allowed engineers to position 33 percent of the iron’s overall weight to the exterior for greater MOI. 100 grams of tungsten is positioned in the heel and toe of each clubhead for low CG for ease of launch and high MOI for greater forgiveness.
Additionally, using nTop’s design software and additive manufacturing allowed for a substantially faster prototyping process, which enabled engineers to test more designs and mass placements for a superior finished product.
