DP World Tour names the one LIV golfer yet to pay their £100k fine
Several players were fined £100k by the DP World Tour for competing with LIV Golf and have since settled their debt, with the tour waiting on just one former member to divvy up.
The man in question?
Sergio Garcia.
On Wednesday, the tour released a statement reporting,”The DP World Tour today confirmed it has received membership resignations from Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Richard Bland and Lee Westwood who were sanctioned for serious breaches of the Tour’s Conflicting Tournament Regulation committed last June.”
Sanctions and fines were imposed on 17 players in total, something the tour says was “a consequence of their own choices,” and has now revealed that 16 of those have paid the fine – around $126,000. Garcia is the lone debtor.
The four were among many that challenged the punishments, initially finding judgement in their favor and allowing them to compete at some of the most respected of European events, including the flagship BMW Championship at Wentworth.
However, nine months later, Sports Resolutions finally reached a verdict in favor of the ruling tour. The verdict allows further sanctions to be handed out to rebel players, prompting Wednesday’s resignations.
During the Masters in April, the former Ryder Cup star said he was unaware of this latest update on the European side of his career.
“How can I talk about something I don’t know?” he said. “Obviously I don’t look at the news, so I don’t know what happened. I’m not going to talk about something without all the information that I need.”
The 2017 Masters champion also said he wasn’t ruling out a return to the DP World Tour, saying he will “see how the year goes”. Latest revelation reveal that to be something of a long-shot.
Thursday’s updated statement states, “Sergio Garcia has not paid his £100,000 fine, nor has he given any indication that he intends to. We will therefore take appropriate action if he continues not to respect the Sport Resolutions panel’s decision.”
The statement concludes there is more news to follow,“Details of further sanctions for players who breached the Conflicting Tournament Regulation by playing in subsequent conflicting events without a release, will be announced next week.”

On Tuesday, Chris McKee, a Toronto writer and radio host, wondered aloud on his X account if Phil Mickelson will be a commentator after his playing days are over.

Mickelson saw the post and responded, saying he’s not interested in moving from the course to the broadcast booth.

While I believe many fans would like to see Phil in the booth, his idea of “Pro’s vs Schmo’s” could certainly be intriguing.

This week, the PGA of America made some surprising announcements regarding the field of next week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla.
The event now will feature 16 LIV players with Talor Gooch, Dean Burmester, David Puig, Adrian Meronk and Patrick Reed receiving special exemptions.
PGA Tour player, Dylan Wu, took issue with how the exemptions were used and went to X to share his thoughts.

Jesper Svennson ranked 108th gets in. Tim Widing 120th gets in. Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald gets a spot. A bunch of guys get leapfrogged even though they’re ranked higher than others. Seems like they just invite whoever they want. Unfair to the guys on the edge like Chan and SH

Just seems like the world of professional golf is in a weird spot and I love that the tournament invited a handful of great LIV players but figure out a correct system for a major championship where guys know they’ll be in or not. ???? @NUCLRGOLF @Daniel_Rapaport @acaseofthegolf1

Fans who replied to Wu seemed to agree that a more definitive ranking system for the PGA Championship should be established.

On Tuesday, the full field for the PGA Championship at Valhalla was released. In some surprising news, a handful of LIV players were granted exemptions including Dean Burmester, Patrick Reed, Lucas Herbert and Adrian Meronk.
The most surprising omission was Louis Oosthuizen. The South African has been one of the most consistent players on LIV this season, and also won two DP World Tour events in the fall.
According to the AP’s Doug Ferguson, Oosthuizen was actually given an invitation, but declined due to “personal commitments”.
Turns out PGA offered Oosthuizen an invitation. He turned it down because of personal commitments. Not sure what those were.

In total, there will be 16 LIV golfers teeing it up next week at Valhalla.
