LPGA pro calls out commentator who questioned shot selection at Chevron

Never shy of coming forward, this time last year, the 39-year-old spoke last year about the change of venue for the first women’s major, saying the move from Mission Hills to this week’s venue at the Woodlands was “bittersweet.”
“I wish that there was more willingness from all parties, including the people (making decisions) here, to have found a way to make it work so that we could’ve stayed here [Mission Hills].”
The three-time LPGA Tour winner has also spoken outwardly of her troubles both on and off the course, telling ESPN of her memory of her mother’s words, “Even in the darkest of nights, there will be a beautiful sunrise.”
Given that, does anyone think a lake full of snakes was ever going to put off the 39-year-old from playing any shot?
Starting on the 10th hole for her second round, Kim was already outside the cut line when she drove into the lake on the par-4 15th hole.
Off came the shoes and socks, and after being helped down the steep bank by her caddie, she chose her club and prepared to play from the bank, well outside the hazard marker.
Despite the NBC analysts fearing for her safety, in a move typical of her character, Kim had no worries about playing from the water.
“There are snakes here, in some of these water hazards,” claimed Tom Abbott of the host broadcasters. “I’m not so sure I’d want to do that.”
Co-commentator Morgan Pressel beefed it up further, saying, “I think there’s more than snakes in some of these water hazards,” before Abott confirmed he thought “this isn’t a great idea.”
“I don’t know she really has a choice,” said Pressel, recognising Kim’s place on the leaderboard, two shots off the cut at 1-over par.
In the end, our heroine did well to make bogey, her first dropped shot of the day, and, sadly, the start of a five-over round of 77.
It didn’t stop her from taking to her Twitter account either, posting the clip with the header, “Wow, @TomAbbottGC, I never took you to be such an unimaginative golfer. Cheers, my guy.”
Wow, @TomAbbottGC I never took you to be such an unimaginative golfer. Cheers, my guy.
Also, assessed the area and saw no signs of snakes or gators. Besides, I’ve had a good run and I go when I go. https://t.co/rVn4cOQvZz

Brandel Chamblee says this technological development was key to Phil Mickelson winning major championships
While speaking with GolfWRX, Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee shared that he believes the solid core golf ball helped Phil Mickelson win major championships.
“One of the consequences of the solid core golf ball coming around was it put the straightest of hitters in the rough.”
“Phil started winning majors in 2004, I don’t think that’s any coincidence. I think he started winning majors after the solid core golf ball came along and put everybody in the rough.
And so [Phil] is like ‘I got you in the rough, I’m going to kick your a**. This is my game. I’ve been in the rough my whole career. I can go over trees, through trees, around trees.’
Because he’s got that amazing creativity and Phil is an underrated iron player, phenomenal iron player. Great, great great out of the trouble. If you put the top-40 players on a list and ranked them in terms of accuracy, he would be 40th.
So, I think that was one of the consequences of the solid core golf balls was it allowed Phil to win major championships.”
Mickelson went on to win The Masters in 2004 as well as five additional majors from 2004-2021 including three total Masters, two PGA Championships and an Open Championship.

Former Augusta National employee pleads guilty to transporting stolen Masters memorabilia; Arnold Palmer’s green jacket among stolen items
The document was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
Since then, more details have emerged about the case.
According to Darren Rovell of Cllct, one of the items that was stolen was Arnold Palmer’s green jacket.
The Chicago Tribune also reported that Globensky was able to steal the merchandise due to his role as a former warehouse coordinator at Augusta National who oversaw the Masters merchandise that was sold.
Rovell states that “A source with intimate knowledge of the case said an Augusta National member, who knew the jacket was missing, contacted a well-known collector who had gained a reputation for tracking down rare items. The member’s goal was to return the jacket to Augusta under the guise of purchasing it in a private sale.”
The plan worked, and the man agreed to sell the jacket for an agreed upon price of $3.6 million. After the sale was complete, the FBI swarmed the house of the thief.
Cllct also reported that Globensky pled guilty in a federal court in Chicago on Wednesday and now faces up to 10 years in prison.
The Chicago Tribune adds that Globensky’s plea deal includes an agreement to provide the government a cashier’s check for $1.5 million in the next few days.

Brandel Chamblee says this is the primary reason why Rory McIlroy hasn’t won a major in 10 years
It’s been ten years since Rory McIlroy won his last major championship. When he walked off the green of Valhalla in 2014, many golf fans thought the Northern Irishman would win a handful more by the time 2024 came around. However, McIlroy has come up short in the decade that’s passed since that day.
While speaking with GolfWRX, Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee gave his opinion as to why McIlroy has come up empty.
“I just think he can’t find a place mentally where he plays his best golf.”
“If you go back and look at what he did from 2011-2014, in that stretch, he led roughly 20% of the rounds he played in major championships. His game has not fallen off, not one bit.
He’s, on paper, pretty much the same player he was. He’s not quite the ball striker he was 2011-2014, not quite, but he’s made up for it with his short game around the greens and on the greens. He’s almost the same player.
“Yet, he’s led just two rounds beginning with the 2015 Masters to the 2024 Masters. I just think that tells you he can’t find the proper way to prepare, the proper way to ease into a round. When he’s needed to play his best, he’s played his worst. When he’s played his worst, he’s then followed it up with his best golf. That’ll tell you that he’s just not in the right place mentally.”
Chamblee did say that he believes his win at Quail Hollow last week may have a positive impact on McIlroy’s chances going forward.
“I said last week, and I believe it, that beginning in the final round on Golf Central that I thought that round could echo. It could influence how he plays not just this week but the rest of this year and going forward. He needed to go out and dominate.”
McIlroy will look to end the major drought this week at Valhalla.
