Saudi Golf Executive: I’ll create new majors if LIV defectors are banned from traditional big four

Published

on

There’s been speculation that the major championships may be holding LIV Golf members out of the four major championships during the 2023 season.

At the moment, it remains up in the air. However, if the players are indeed banned from participating, Majed Al Sorour, the chief executive of Golf Saudi who’s heavily involved with LIV Golf, has an idea of his own.

According to Zach Helfand of The New Yorker, LIV Golf will create their own major championships if the players can’t participate in the traditional ones.

In the interview, Sorour states that he believes the major championships are leaning towards siding with the PGA TOUR and keeping LIV golfers out.

“For now, the majors are siding with the Tour, and I don’t know why,” he said.

Sorour then added:

“If the majors decide not to have our players play? I will celebrate. I will create my own majors for my players. Honestly, I think all the tours are being run by guys who don’t understand business.”

If LIV is forced to create their own majors, Sorour didn’t specualte as to whether their “own majors” would be tournaments that are currently scheduled or additional events.

What if they make it a open event, full field with a cut for their majors. And first gets 15 million?

You think people wont watch that? The chance to see some Monday qualifier have a chance to change his life. Those 4 majors would qualify for points by everyones standards as well…..Thats when Ill start watching lol

I’m as big a LIV/Trump hater as anybody you can find. But I hope that the majors don’t “ban” any currently-eligible/exempt players. As a trial and appellate lawyer, I’d hate to see them get sued, and create some bad law.

Let the exempt players play, while their exemptions remain in effect. Let them all try to qualify for the US Open and Open Championship like anybody else. (They may be forced into local qualifying!) Let the small handful of Masters winners continue to play as exempt past champions.

As for the PGA Championship, I’m not quite sure. The LIV guys have lost their PGA TOUR status; their PGA professional status is another matter.

All in all, I just don’t want to see any sort of spiteful banning help to create any good lawsuits for LIV payoff recipients.

The Saudi Golf Tour has so much money that they can finance a trip back in time to create a major that was started BEFORE the British Open. They have so much money that they can purchase the Naming Rights to deceased golfers so that even their new “majors” will claim that winners include names such as Hogan, Snead, Palmer and Sarazen. They have so much money that purses will be $500 million with $100 million to the winner. And still…. nobody will watch. For people who “understand business,” the Saudi Golf Tour has to be the worst investment Mohammed bin Salman has ever made.
