YouTube sensation ejected by Brooks Koepka at Open Championship party

Published

on

British YouTube sensation Rick Shiels this week revealed how Brooks Koepka had him removed from the VIP section of a Scottish nightclub during the running of the 150th Open Championship.

The popular ex-professional has been a worldwide hit on social media, with many fans pointing to the manner of his presentation and demeanor.

A typical example of a recent comment reads, “in some way your videos have rekindled my desire to get back out and play again,” so it’s hard not to feel some sort of sympathy when hearing his latest podcast, despite the humor behind it all.

He starts the tale of last Saturday night, a day after the four-time major winner had missed the cut at St. Andrews:

“So it’s Saturday night, I’m out and having a nice time, just as I was Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night… St Andrews is a good place for this, lots of good places… shout out to Dunvegan who very much looked after me with a VIP pass, a shout out to Sounder Bar, which also looked after me, and also to an establishment called ‘The Vic’,” said the man who tried to break 75 on The Old Course just days before the big event.

“Now ‘The Vic’ is the place where you end up at the end of the night. I didn’t realise St Andrews had this establishment, which I absolutely fell in love with, okay?”

“So luckily enough I got quite friendly with the manager after spending just about every single day in there, I spent a lot of money in there… I’ve not checked my bank account yet… so I walk in, through I go and they tell me they’ve got Brooks Koepka upstairs in VIP… I think ‘sweet’.”

“So we go upstairs… it’s VIP, but it’s not VIP. It’s just a bit of a roped off area. Just IPs. So we get to the rope, there’s a security guard there, and it’s busy, quite popping. Then a guy in VIP, who I didn’t know, puts his hand up and says ‘these two can come in’. So I’m looking around thinking whatever, walking in, this is alright isn’t it, champagne everywhere, I’m having a good time. I’m thinking this is where I could turn into Shielsy in a minute!

“So I’m in there. I lasted, guy… a grand total of 90 seconds. I come in, it’s like a U-shape VIP bar. I go round the corner and end up talking to Sam Westwood, Lee Westwood’s son, who reckons he can beat me. I’m like okay, whatever, no problem. That conversation was short and very brief, and then I turned to my left and I see Brooks.”

So I see Brooksy, here’s there, I’m thinking this is cool. I might introduce myself. Dream scenario… he will come up to me and give me a big hug and say,”Rick, love your videos pal, that was the dream, let’s have some champagne, let’s have some Sambuca.”

“He missed the cut. This was Saturday. I’m like, here we go, Brooksy. So I turn to him and he looks at me right in the eye and he taps the security guard next to him, the bouncer, turns back to me, points at me, points at my mate Neil, and then indicates to the bouncer to remove us from the VIP section.”

“I’m like, what have I done to offend Brooks Koepka?! So I’m like this is really embarrassing now… 90 seconds ago I walked in here like cock of the land and now I’m walking out with a tail between my legs.”

“This is now a feud… Brooks Koepka, why did you kick me out of VIP? What happened?!”

Koepka revelled in the story of his humble pathway (mini-tours in Europe etc.) to major champion and I was a big fan for a while. 2022, turns out he is a complete d-bag. I have no opinion on Rick Shiels.

Rick calls himself “Shielsy”? Haha. Rick is kind a knob. His videos are annoying and he thinks he’s better than he actually is. Definitely not a “sensation”. Good on Brooks for doing that.

Cool story. I think Rick Shiels is irritating, makes boring content and isn’t any good at golf. Brook has won four majors and seems to have the personality of a cardboard box.

While I’m disappointed by this story, I’m not at all surprised.

Koepka worked overtime to keep his feud with DeChambeau going – frankly, he acted like an ass through much of it.

He’s not the owner of the place, he’s a GUEST. It’d be the owner’s call re: who the owner considers a “VIP” entitled to access, not Koepka’s.

More & more, stuff like this reveals Koepka to be a mean SOB who’s capable of playing very good golf.

Tour pro says Tiger and Rory are not doing enough to stop LIV Golf

Published

on

In an interview with The Irish Times, DP World Tour player Mike Lorenzo-Vera shared his belief that taking down LIV Golf would be a fairly straightforward task.

Speaking about players who haven’t been as vocal as they should in his view, the Frenchman told the publication:

“I’m very surprised about the silence. Use your social network. What are you doing? Go ahead. Speak.”

“The [DP World Tour] players are totally against the way the players go there and come back and particularly the way they go to the law to try to avoid the fines. There are a lot of people who are on the same page.

“They are taking the money and they are just laughing in the face of people.

“The players are against the way LIV Golf is doing it. They are just scared that negative comments could come back to them. It’s time to stand up and show the European Tour has history and the players are not just little brats.”

According to the 37-year-old, if Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy spoke out more strongly against LIV Golf, they could severely limit what the Greg Norman-backed golf series would be able to accomplish.

However, in his mind both Tiger and Rory have been “too soft” in their stance, although per the publication, he admits it’s trickier for them due to their high profiles.

“If Tiger and Rory really wanted to take it down, they could. If they really want to, they could talk like myself, Robert MacIntyre or Billy Horschel for example. If they start to show their anger, I think they can do a great job by limiting what’s going on.”

Lorenzo-Vera also took some shots at Greg Norman, saying:

“They are throwing huge money to steal players because Norman is angry at the tours. It’s his last shot, how old is he 70 something?”

Lorenzo-Vera has been very outspoken on Twitter about his disdain for LIV Golf in recent months.

Lorenzo-Vera didn’t hold back when sharing his opinion on the statement Henrik Stenson released after abandoning the Ryder Cup to join LIV Golf.

He’s also said via Twitter that he hasn’t talked to any player who’s joined LIV Golf since they’ve left.

There have been plenty of differing opinions on LIV Golf since its inception, but Mike Lorenzo-Vera has made his crystal clear.

Lexi Thompson’s daily practice routine shows the dedication it takes to stay at the top of the sport

Published

on

Golf fans often opine that being a professional golfer would be the best job in the world. While that may be true for some, it can sometimes be overlooked just how much hard work it takes to play at the highest level.

Lexi Thompson, who is an 11-time LPGA Tour winner, gave us a glimpse into what her everyday training regimen entails via her instagram page.

In the post, Thompson shared the details of her practice session:

“A look inside my solid practice session today…I average practicing about 3-5 hours a day but putting alone about 2 hours. Then on top of that 1-2 hours in the gym training. So if I’m not playing an event that is my everyday schedule, hardly ever any days off”

There’s no doubt that to get to where Lexi Thompson has gotten, massive amounts of work ethic and dedication are an absolute requirement.

After putting in the work over the past few weeks, Lexi will be hoping it pays off at this week’s AIG Women’s Open where she goes in hunt of her second major.

LPGA major champ hits out at Bubba Watson and his wife over decision to join LIV

Published

on

The question is simple.

“What are the reasons you (LIV golfer) jumped ship from the PGA/DP World Tour?”

It’s been a long-held argument from those opposed to the Greg Norman-led tour that players are ignoring the human rights record of the backers — the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund.

And instead, golfers are masking the financial benefits via rhetoric containing reasons such as “more time with family,” “exciting (54-hole shotgun start) golf” and that they should be free to work for whoever they like, rather than be tied down by the leading organizations.

Latest signing, Bubba Watson, has explained his own situation rather differently.

As the series unveiled him at Bedminster, home of last week’s third LIV event, the two-time Masters champion gave his reasons for leaving the PGA Tour behind:

“My wife loved it, we prayed about it, we came to the decision and here we are. Everyone’s a team. It’s not an individual sport any more. It’s another thing we didn’t have and now we’re bringing it to life.”

An interesting explanation, and not bought by many on the circuit.

Indeed, LPGA Tour player Angela Stanford took to Twitter to show her exasperation at the statement.

The 2018 Evian Champion was making a point that many have made — pointing to the human rights record of the Saudi regime — although it wasn’t received well by everyone.

Replies ranged from the supportive, “Thank you for saying this. I don’t believe a word of his statement,” and, “nailed it, ” to ones that questioned the support provided by Arab companies for some top-class women’s events.

One poster asked, “Wait, wasn’t there just a women’s event in Saudi Arabia? Georgia Hall won in March, in SA in a Sanctioned event. Is that not ok? I’ll sit back and wait for this answer.”

As the tour continues, so do the arguments. It seems unlikely we are any nearer to harmony.
