Did Rory McIlroy just take a shot at his own equipment move?



Rory McIlroy just isn’t having it.

The defending RBC Canadian Open champion continues to refuse to have anything to do with the LIV Golf series, seemingly surprised and upset that many of his on-course rivals have jumped ship.

On Wednesday, the four-time Major champion re-iterated his desire to stick with the status quo, giving tradition and history of the game amongst his reasons.

“I’m a self-confessed golf nerd, historian, traditionalist. Most of the oldest events in our game are national opens,” said McIlroy, who mentioned his five national opens, six if you include Hong Kong’s. “One of the great things about our game is you can in some way compare yourself to historical figures, figures that I’ve never met before.

“I look at a trophy that my name’s on and Walter Hagen’s name is on there or Gene Sarazen or Byron Nelson or Ben Hogan or Jack Nicklaus or Arnold Palmer or whoever it is, and I think that’s one of the coolest things about our sport that not a lot of other sports can sort of tap into.”

“You look at the Canadian Open trophy and you look at the names that are on that. You’re putting your name in history by winning these national championships,” said McIlroy, ranked No. 8 in the world.

He seemingly then had a little jibe at the likes of Dustin Johnson and Ryder Cup team-mates Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Greame McDowell and Ian Poulter by confirming, “Honestly, it’s something that money can’t buy or it’s something that money can’t give you.”

McIlroy has also told reporters this week that,”any decision you make in your life purely for money usually doesn’t end up going the right way.”

Whilst this was a phrase among a host of paragraphs discussing the you-know-what tour, was he talking from experience?

In 2013, a young McIlroy joined Tiger Woods as brand ambassador for Nike Golf, explaining this was for “a number of reasons.”

At the time, he explained, “”It’s a company and a brand that resonates with me. It’s young, it’s athletic and it’s innovative. They are committed to being the best, as am I. Signing with Nike is another step towards living out my dream.”

His initial struggles with the new clubs were widely reported although he did win two majors with the set – the 2014 PGA and Open Championships – before Nike decided to stop producing clubs and concentrate on apparel, the famous ‘swoosh’ appearing proud on McIlroy’s cap at press conferences this week.

Whatever the outcome with that lucrative deal, he is adamant that he isn’t going anywhere, let alone the LIV tour, at the moment.

“I can spend a lot of time at home with my family if I want to, prioritize the majors and there is nothing about my schedule or my life or my earnings or anything that I would change.”

      Yes. Let’s talk about China and Nike’s Human Rights Violations and the massive amounts of money made by Nike from exploiting children in their factories. Rory can play high and mighty and look the other way…but we all know he’s a puppet for the PGA and Nike.

    What is the LIV business model? Oh wait there isn’t one. The Saudis are just throwing money at the greedy pros with no self respect in order to make their image look better and the pros are the saudi lapdogs. LIV has to give tickets away because no self respecting fan will watch this 54 hole exhibition and see it for exactly what it is, sportswashing or if you prefer, PR.

      Hahaha… exactly! I just don’t see how this LIV Tour is going to be sustainable despite how much money the Saudis have to throw it’s way. At the end of the day, this seems more like a transitional Tour for the 40-so things who are no longer competitive on the PGA Tour and who would’ve probable played the PGA Tour of Champions. I mean, seriously, who really wants to tune in to see Charl Schwartzel? Lovely guy, but…

Report: Major sponsor becomes first to urge PGA Tour to hold peace talks with LIV



According to The Telegraph, a major investor is urging both the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour to have “peace talks” with LIV Golf.

Johann Rupert, who is the chairman of Richemont, a Swiss luxury-goods maker, has invested over $100 million into the sport of golf.

South Africa’s richest man issued a statement to tournament spokespeople at St. Andrews for this weeks Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

“This is the Home of Golf and we are all here to celebrate golf,” the spokesperson said from St. Andrews. “There needs to be a cessation of hostilities which are threatening the future of the game we all love. People need to talk to each other to find a solution.”

There doesn’t seem to be any type of negotiation imminent between the rival tours. According to LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman, Jay Monahan hasn’t returned any of his phone calls since the inception of LIV Golf. Commissioner of the DP World Tour Keith Pelley has also expressed he doesn’t have much desire to work with Norman.

Patrick Reed and Peter Uihlein got a sponsors invite from Rupert. Although Reed withdrew with a back injury, many believe that Rupert was sending a message with how he used his sponsors invite.

Report: LIV Golf closing in on deal to PURCHASE airtime with major network



According to Golfweek, LIV Golf are closing in on a deal that will see the breakaway tour televised on Fox Sports 1.

The report indicates that LIV Golf will be paying Fox to air their product, which is unusual of television deals. Typically, the media company will pay a rights fee to the sports league to air the tournament.

Golfweek speculates that this move “will be widely interpreted as a failure to attract serious commercial interest in what it is offering.”

LIV Golf CEO had reportedly been shopping his product around to multiple media companies just as recently as a few weeks ago.

“We’re talking to four different networks, and live conversations where offers are being put on the table,” Norman told ESPN. “They can see what we’re delivering.”

LIV was still angling to receive a rights fee in the second year of the deal, but Fox reportedly declined to accept their proposal. Fox will be willing to renegotiate a rights fee at a later date.

The final two LIV events of the season, including a match play event at Trump Doral in Miami, Florida are planned to be shown on Fox once the deal is completed.

The arrangement is not yet finalized.

Couple pull off insanely cool Masters-themed wedding



There are golf fans, and then there are golf super-fans.

Matt Ziance, a former marketer for NBC Sports and the Golf Channel, proved that he and his wife Kate were simply obsessed by the sport, by making their nuptials an homage to the greatest of the traditional tournaments – the Masters.

The wedding, on July 3rd this year, involved not just a nod to Augusta, and a Masters-themed cake, but an entire exhibition!

Included in the day were:

  • The couple’s nephews dressed head-to-toe as ‘ring caddies,’ dressed in white Master’s overalls and carrying the rings in golf-ball shaped cases.
  • Kate’s flower girl carrying a bucket of tees, balls and rose petals.
  • Personalized signs at the First Presbyterian Church featuring the Masters logo, with tables carrying the traditional Masters flag.
  • The duo’s entrance involving an attempt at a long-range putt
  • 5000 cookies, baked by Kate’s mom and referencing golf themes
  • Matt wearing an Augusta green jacket for the service, and golf socks, tie and custom Nike clothing for the reception party

The couple started playing golf together since their first date in 2020, and estimate they played over 60 rounds together last year.

No matter how many times they may have played, or the dedication shown to the sport, neither Matt and Kate have ever been to Augusta, though continue their bid at each lottery raffle.

Oh, and Matt also managed to arrange former associate Jim Nantz to present a short introduction and welcome to the guests – using his famous phrase – “Hello friends!”

As Matt says, “It was a wedding unlike any other.”
