Rory McIlroy not looking forward to Olympics as he’s ‘not a very patriotic guy’ – GolfWRXers react

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been reacting to comments made by Rory McIlroy, showing his lack of enthusiasm towards the Olympics.

The 32-year-old will represent Ireland next month at the games and has revealed that he is “not a very patriotic guy”, that he doesn’t know if there’s “much to look forward to” and is playing at the games because he feels it is “the right thing to do.”

Our members have been discussing McIlroy’s comments in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • One Putter: “Why does it feel like Rory doesn’t really care much about golf anymore.”
  • 3whacker: “IMO Rory needs to step away from reading the self-help books, they have just cluttered his golfing mind, they might have done wonders for his personal life and self-awareness, but if you listen to his pressers, he is always talking like someone who has just been thru a therapy session with a shrink…the over-analyzing over his golf swing and the mechanics and what he is working on has got him so tied up…maybe he needs to see a sports psychologist to free him up from all the other psychobabble because when he plays pure golf, he comes real close to being unbeatable.”
  • Pepperturbo: “There are a lot of people that like Rory, but I am not one of them. My dislike began years back when Tiger influenced him to dump his manager to switch to Tiger’s mgt company, and it resulted in Rory’s breaking an implied contract and big court battle. Never followed it to see how it settled but haven’t bothered with Rory since. So, what he said in that interview and another interview is sad but not surprising. Rory is all about Rory, and I don’t think there’s much to him.”
  • Go Cougs: “Yes, it is a weird thing for him to say. I see Rory as a pretty apathetic guy though, so not too shocking.”

Stopped liking him after some of his recent political comments. Also, years ago he said he identifies more as an Englishman than Irishman.

Your dream irons? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been talking about their dream irons. WRXer ‘Texas_Golfer’ asks what irons would be in the bag if money were no object, and our members have been detailing their ideal setup in our forums.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • nitram: “Bridgestone J40 Blades.”
  • jomatty: “Right now I’m coveting a set of the Callaway TCB’s. A set of the black Miura CB 301’s would be amazing as well. I doubt either one of them would be any better for me than my Apex Pro 19’s though.”
  • RolandofGildead: “Ben Hogan Icons, black DBM finish, with black onyx Dynamic Gold S400. Remove all paint fill except sunburst and iron #. Unfortunately I know myself and my game, and playing those would be too frustrating.”
  • BStrong1313: “Probably the original Nike blades or the Vapor pro Mmproto’s. Those were sleek. I’m playing z945’s now in my short irons, and those have always been on my bucket list.”
  • 14max: “I want Eye2s with modern grooves, reduced offset, stronger lofts, and a multitude of shaft options. That’s not too much to ask…”

Playing without irons? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing the prospect of playing golf without irons. WRXer ‘nostatic’ has been pondering using only a combination of hybrids and wedges, saying:

“Perhaps heretical and insane (guilty), but given the prevalence of good hybrids and good wedges, I’m wondering if anyone has forsaken their irons (or almost all of them) and gone with a combination of head covers and wedges.
Some of it is semantics (when is a 9i a 9i?), but you can get almost any wedge of your choice (I’m loving my Fourteens),

60/56/50/45 (the 45 is a 46 bent 1*). You can do something like G425 hybrids 34/30/26/22 (then on to woods of your choice). For those with slower swing speeds, 4*-5* between clubs can work for gapping. And the hybrids are adjustable, so you can hit the 34 at 35. Then you really only need a 40* club (pick your favorite 9-ish iron).”

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • NHenson815: “I am actually thinking about doing this in my next round. I am so bad with short irons and wedges that I’m better off attempting to distance control my 11 wood instead. I’ll carry a 64 degree wedge for short shots (odd that I have confidence in that but not a 7 iron – I know), but that will be the only non-wood/non-hybrid in the bag.”
  • 596: “I have more covers in my bag than not. Head covers for woods and hybrids down through 7 iron. 8 is the longest iron in my bag. You just have to get over hitting a 32* hybrid from 155. It feels weird. I’m a high single-digit handicap. Shot even par for 9 holes yesterday. Which seems to be the case lately. I’ll shoot 36 to 38 on the front, then 40 or 42 on the back as my back goes south and the heat gets crazy.”
  • Obee: “I’m not a “great” player, but thank you for the thought. I do carry 8-iron, 9-iron, and 4 wedges, so not exactly “all” hybrids/woods, though I could make that work, I’m sure.”

What GolfWRXers are saying about TaylorMade’s new 300 Mini Driver

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing TaylorMade’s new 300 Mini Driver. Some WRXers have managed to get their hands on the club, and the early reviews suggest that the Mini Driver will be staying in their bags for quite a while.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • MaineMariner: “I just got back from a TaylorMade wood fitting here in Pittsburgh. To be honest, I was mostly interested in getting some data on an outdoor Trackman setup because I hate hitting indoors into a screen. But I did really want to try out the Mini. Well, I was really not planning this, but I walked out $400 lighter. I can post some data later, but I was longer and straighter with the 300 Mini than I was with my current Epic Flash driver. I was straight smoking the ball, over and over and over again. For a mid handicapper, I was astonished at how well I was hitting the ball. Also, it sounds fantastic, which doesn’t hurt.”
  • bladehunter: “This guy is going into the bag. Hit 20 more before leaving to go to kids b-ball practice just now. And it’s one of those clubs that just wows me right out of the gate. I have only hit 4 balls off a tee with it, the rest off the deck; that’s how good it is off the deck. And I’m not hitting off a mat. I’m on tight Bermuda. This isn’t a mini driver. It’s a big 3 wood.”
  • IvanDrago: “Picked up my 11.5 yesterday. Was about 25mph wind on the course, so only used it downwind and hit some bombs. It’s very easy to hit and is a lot more confidence-inspiring than a driver on certain holes. The shaft is a noodle though. Not sure what to get for it.”
  • uglande: “I just posted on another thread. Bottom line — I love it. The sound and feel are just outstanding, and I also love the look. I will be using it solely as a 1B driver and only very rarely off the fairway. I ordered a 13.5 and will be testing it with a Ventus Blue 7x after it arrives and will report back. Very impressed so far.”
