Bryson: ‘The driver sucks!’; Cobra rep: ‘Really painful when he says something that stupid’

Bryson DeChambeau never looked comfortable on day one of the Open at Royal St. Georges, and after his round blasted his driver which he says “sucks”, before a Cobra rep scolded the 2020 U.S. Open champ for his outburst.

The 27-year-old hit only one of his opening nine fairways on Thursday morning and was candid when talking to media regarding his frustration with the big stick.

“The driver sucks!. It’s not a good face for me, and we’re still trying to figure out how to make it good on the mishits. I’m living on the razor’s edge like I’ve told people for a long time.

“When I did get it outside of the fairway, like in the first cut and whatnot, I catch jumpers out of there and I couldn’t control my wedges.”

Bryson did find something on his back nine, ending the day 4/14 for fairways hit, but it appears the 27-year-old was downcast on turning things around with his current driver face, saying that the issues have been there for years.

“I’ve realised this for years now. This has happened since 2016-17 when players stopped drawing it. There’s not very many golfers that draw it anymore. It’s not because of spin rate. Everybody thinks it’s because we’re at 2000, 1800 spin or whatever. It’s not.

“It’s literally the physics and the way that they build heads now. It’s not the right design, unfortunately, and we’ve been trying to fix it.”

Speaking to GolfWeek’s David Dusek, Ben Schomin, who along with being Cobra’s tour operations manager, caddied for Bryson two week’s ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, then had his say on Bryson’s criticism of his Cobra Radspeed driver ( 5 degrees).

Schomin, who is involved in the building process for Bryson’s driver and irons, responded to Bryson’s outburst by telling the publication that it’s “really painful when he (Bryson) says something that stupid”.

“Everybody is bending over backwards. We’ve got multiple guys in R&D who are CAD’ing (computer-aided design) this and CAD-ing that, trying to get this and that into the pipeline faster. (Bryson) knows it. It’s just really, really painful when he says something that stupid.

He has never really been happy, ever. Like, it’s very rare where he’s happy. Now he’s in a place where he’s swinging a 5-degree driver with 200 mph of ball speed. Everybody is looking for a magic bullet. Well, the magic bullet becomes harder and harder to find the faster you swing and the lower your loft gets.”

On Thursday evening, Bryson released a statement on his social media condemning his earlier comments as being “very unprofessional”.

Its a Cobra, what did he expect? It probably still sounds like a beer can too, heard over the sound of 747’s.

Phil Mickelson’s response to summary of his season is absolutely perfect

Phil Mickelson has been no stranger to speaking his mind on social media, and a recent tweet from Golf Channel’s Shane Bacon discussing the bizarreness of the PGA Champion’s 2020-2021 season was the perfect opportunity for another vintage Mickelson one-liner.

Mickelson makes the key point that he won one of the four biggest golf tournaments of the year, and while the rest of his season was marred with inconsistency, it’s the big ones that get remembered.

Bacon appreciated the comment of Mickelson, as did the rest of us, posting on our Instagram “The King remain the King”. Which sums it up nicely.

Euro Tour pro’s mother to the rescue during freak health scare at BMW Championship

In Thursday’s round one of the BMW Championship, Robert MacIntyre and playing partners Graeme McDowell and Alex Noren encountered a surprising and difficult scene on their very first hole.

Play was briefly halted after a patron collapsed. Tournament officials immediately called for an ambulance, but Robert MacIntyre’s mother was first to the scene.

Carol MacIntyre reacted instantly, comforting the man before he was eventually taken to St. Peter’s Hospital in an ambulance with a police motorcycle escort.

The 25-year old rising star from Scotland later commented:

“She knows what she’s doing. She’s done nursing stuff. She’s a jack of all trades. She’s not a doctor or can diagnose something straight away, but she knows the basics and she knew to cool the guy down. I was watching what she was doing, but there were more people than just here there to help. She’s some machine is Carol Mac.”

Amidst the chaos, MacIntyre carded an opening round two-over-par 74. The Ryder Cup hopeful needs a win at Wentworth to automatically qualify for the European team.

Steve Stricker shares positive news from Tiger Woods’ rehab

While Steve Stricker announced earlier this week that Tiger Woods will not be joining the U.S. Ryder Cup team in Kohler, Wisconsin, the U.S. captain also revealed that he has stayed in close touch with the 15-time major winner and is optimistic about how Woods’ rehab is progressing.

Stricker told Carl and Dennis Paulson on SiriusXM’s ‘Inside the Ropes’:

“I’ve talked to Tiger a lot. He’s a part of this Ryder Cup family; he won’t be able to be a captain’s assistant this time around just because of his ongoing rehabilitation to try and get better and try to play golf again, and that is going well. He’s progressing, he’s doing well, things are moving in the right direction.”

Woods suffered multiple leg fractures in a single car crash in Los Angeles in February. The 45-year old was last seen on a golf course competing with his son in the PNC Championship in December of 2020.
