Brooks the bully? Brandel Chamblee weighs in on DeChambeau-Koepka feud

The beef between Brooks and Bryson has been what all golf fans have been talking about over the last couple of weeks.

What began with a leaked viral video showing Koepka’s disdain for his rival soon spilled over onto social media, where the two traded barbs.

But it was last weekend where the feud threatened to get ugly, with fans at the Memorial being removed from the grounds for taunting Bryson with shouts of ‘Brooksy’ – with Koepka then taking to social media to offer those fans free beer.

Golf analyst Brandel Chamblee, who has had his own little back and forth with Koepka in the past, took to his Twitter recently to express his take on the feud, and in typical fashion, the 58-year-old didn’t pull any punches, saying:

“As a parent I was sadly aware of increased bullying in schools & when I see the back & forth w/ “Brooksie” & Bryson, I wager kids are watching to see what’s acceptable behavior. The “cool kids” no doubt will think it’s ok to pick on who looks/thinks differently. #notcooltobully”

Golf fans have interpreted the “cool kid” in Chamblee’s take to be Koepka, with the different thinker to be Bryson, and it’s a comment that has stoked a lot of strong responses.

“A mutual feud is significantly different than bullying..” wrote one Twitter user in reaction to Chamblee’s take, with one commenter responding, “It’s not really a mutual feud when the overwhelming majority of the public shots have come from Brooks.”

“Calling a professional athlete the wrong name in the midst of a public feud is not bullying.” wrote another user, with another supporting Chamblee’s view saying, “Well said. Rivalry in sport is great for viewing, but the Brooksy thing has gone too far.”

In terms of golf feuds, the Bryson-Brooks one is certainly more polarizing than most.

Lol at all of the reactions. Personally, I am of the “nothing to see here folks crowd.” I feel like BK and BD are secretly conspiring behind the scenes with this bogus media beef to benefit their own interests. Anybody remember the episode of South Park where Jesus and Satan had a boxing match and all of South Park placed their bets on who they figured would come out victorious when in the end, well…

Brooks encourages the behavior while at home, but complains about the crowd behavior following him and phil at the pga.

Case reports and small studies indicate that anabolic steroids increase irritability and aggression,75 although findings may be confounded by personality traits that are overrepresented in steroid users (i.e., antisocial, borderline, and histrionic personality disorder)78 and use of other drugs.79 People who misuse anabolic steroids report more anger than nonusers,80 as well as more fights, verbal aggression, and violence toward their significant others,81 sometimes called “roid rage.” One study suggests that the mood and behavioral effects seen during anabolic-androgenic steroid misuse may result from secondary hormonal changes.82

I think its funny how no one else ever talks about how other PGA pros have also voiced there dislike for Bryson. Brooks definitely says the most yet there are a lot of other pros that say things too. JT, Rory, Speith, Tiger, Reed, Nicholas, Gary Player and im sure many many others. Lets be real Bryson probably doesnt have a lot of tour friends and I dont think he cares nor do they. And honestly no one really says much; slow play, drive and chip bad for the game, slow play, slow play…you’ll get it after a few mins… 🙂

Everyone saying this is two alphas going at it is full of it. Have you ever watched Bryson at all? His YouTube, him on other people’s YouTube etc? Bryson is a bro not an alpha. I was a fan of brooks for awhile until he started whining about everything. Slow play, steel cleats, the color of sunsets all while spreading his butt cheeks for sports illustrated. Bryson is a bro but brooks is a garden utensil. Brooks puts the ho’ in mike honcho. (Ricky Bobby reference)

Brooks’ input has always been largely negative in tone. Very alpha-chode. He lost his friendship with DJ who’s chill AF.
Bryson gives off a “Go for it! Chase your dreeeeams!” vibe. Very life affirming. Yes he’s self-promoting and sometimes obnoxious but basically a very nice kid.
    Team Bryson period.

Bryson doesn’t seem like a “very nice kid” to me. He more reminds me of the arrogant frat boy, the starting quarterback and captain of the football team, and every other narcissistic teenager who has ever been told all of their life that they are a gift to the world and given everything they ever wanted along the way.

Brooks seems more like that high impact middle linebacker on the team, who works his butt off and just wants to make some tackles, get the job done, win the game and go drink beer afterward. Those kind of guys really don’t like the showboats on the field who think they own the world, but would cry like a baby if he ever put a real hit on them.

Personally, I fault Brooks for acting like a spoiled brat and needling Bryson for whatever petty reason he is doing. To encourage these fans who are chanting “Brooksy” and patronizing them with alcohol ….acting like they belong in a peanut gallery rather than at a professional golf tournament is the epitome of immaturity! Throw the bums out!

      • Brandon

        Jun 8, 2021 at 7:36 pm

Not really. Like 90% of what people say on social media is some type of a virtue signal. I doubt Chamblee is correct though, as I’d imagine bullying today is nothing compared to what it used to be.

This all began at least one or even two years ago. It was about pace of play. Koepka moves right along and Bryson was interminable. But then, rather than admit it, Bryson defended his pace of play as necessary for playing his game, his shots. Koepka still moves right along, but Bryson has actually picked up his pace a bit, but is still one of the more ponderous players on Tour. In a way, if people recall the grade school play yards, both of these guys would be described as brats. One guy is the smart aleck and bully. The other guy is just smart as the over-achieving know-it-all with a pocket protector and a schoolbag. Bryson knew exactly what he was doing when he walks right behind Koepka’s live interview wearing his steel spikes on the concrete walk. The problem with any pace of play dispute is that the slower player like Bryson can always “slowplay” the faster players such as Koepka. But Koepka cannot “fastplay” Bryson. As a viewer and fan, don’t need to watch Indy 500 pace of play, but I also don’t need to watch golf and feel like I’m watching paint drying either. They both should grow up and act their age.

    • Good Job

      Jun 9, 2021 at 1:33 pm

      this is a good take

    • Bob Jones

      Jun 9, 2021 at 2:14 pm

You can’t “fastplay” another player? Rory Sabbatini did just that to Ben Crane 16 years ago.

      • KJ

        Jun 9, 2021 at 4:00 pm

In that instance, Ben Crane never did speed up the way Sabbatini wanted. The only thing that happened from that instance was TV focusing on Rory, and in the end Sabbatini resulted in looking like an immature, spoiled, pouty brat. Everyone already knew Crane was slow, but if the first strategy considered is to become bratty and immature, it’s likely not to work. Just MHO. By the way, Sabbatini has since become a lot more mature nowadays.

The video that started it with Koepka’s eye rolling of Bryson walking by was petty and made Brooks look bad. Koepka doesn’t appear like the ‘cool’ kid, but rather he appears immature.

    • Kip Conner

      Jun 8, 2021 at 8:25 pm

Spot on comment. When Brooks offered to buy beer for whoever got thrown out that’s really immature to me. Kids watching him say that and they are looking for a role model and Brooks isn’t it

  21. Norm

    Jun 8, 2021 at 4:04 pm

Some are suggesting the feud provides golf a touch of the common man, a needed thing. First, golf has not been an elite sport for decades, and second, the common man is better than this.

  22. Chuck

    Jun 8, 2021 at 11:55 am

To me, this is the most profoundly uninteresting story in all of golf.

A personal feud(!?) between the two players whom I least care about.

It’s hardly a golf story at all. I keep expecting their parents, or an overly officious school board to step in.

Can the PGA Tour take their mobile phones away from them?

Butch Harmon offers club-throwing advice in funny video

The influx of club-throwing on tour isn’t to everyone’s taste, but in a fun video Butch Harmon has offered up his advice for those who plan to partake in the act in the future.

“OK, for those of you who are temperamental and like to throw clubs; not saying I agree with it or don’t agree with it because I’ve thrown a few. But there’s an art to it.” began Harmon.

The art? Location and convenience for the retrieval.

“Number one, never throw the club sideways or backward because you have to go get it. Always throw it on the line you’re going to walk on.”

Harmon then broke down the technique, which includes his top-tip of always throwing underhand,

“But then the technique is important; you want to have a nice windup and a nice load through the club. The madder you are, the more adrenaline you have, the further you’ll throw it. This one will probably only go about 50 yards, but here’s the technique. Good wind up, move into it, and always underhand.”

Check out Harmon’s advice, plus his perfect club throw in the video below!
