Best setup for a high handicap weekend hacker? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing the best setups for high handicappers. WRXer ‘SkrappyHacker1’ kicks off the thread with his current setup:
“Current set up:
10.5° driver
16° 3w
4-PW game improvement irons
50, 56 RTX 4 wedges
Putter
I’m thinking about switching my 4, 5 and 6 irons to hybrid style irons like the Wilson Launch Pads. Good idea to help my game?”
And our members have been sharing their advice in our forums.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- boggyman: “Keep your driver and fairway, then 4-SW in the Launch Pads. You’ll thank me later. Stupid easy to hit. Then play golf and enjoy being out on the course.”
- herkyjerk: “I shoot mid to high 80’s and don’t even carry a 5 iron. Hybrids and woods and clunky things are your friend. Make peace with that, and the game will be much more fun. I have buddies that try to hit forged blades and 4 irons and 70x shafts, and I beat them half the time.”
- sociojeje: “Some people just don’t hit hybrid well. If you hit your wood well, then probably you are good with hybrid though. Buy one hybrid first (probably 4; 22-24 range?), then see if you like it.”

What’s the perfect mini-driver/shaft combo? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing Mini-Drivers and accompanying shafts. WRXer ‘JamesFisher1990’ is about to purchase a BRNR Mini and is torn on what shaft weight to use, and our members have been sharing their thoughts and set ups in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- PARETO: “New BRNR at 13.5. Took it over to TXG (Club Champ but TXG will always rule) in Calgary for a fit. Took the head down to 12, stuck in a Graphite Design AD at 3 wood length and 60g. Presto- numbers that rivaled my G430Max but with waaaaay tighter dispersion. Win.”
- driveandputtmachine: “Still playing a MIni 300. The head was only 208, so I ordered a heavier weight and play it at 3 wood length. I am playing a Ventus Red 70. I play 70 grams in my fairways. I use it mainly to hit draws off the tee. When I combine me, a driver, and trying to hit a draw it does not work out well most of the time. So the MIni is for that. As an aside, I have not hit the newest BRNR, but the previous model wasn’t great off the deck. The 300 Mini is very good off the deck.”
- JAM01: “Ok, just put the BRNR in the bag along side a QI10 max and a QI10 3 wood. A load of top end redundancy. But, I have several holes at my two home courses where the flight and accuracy of the mini driver helps immensely. Mine is stock Proforce 65 at 13.5, I could see a heavier shaft, but to normal flex, as a nice alternative.”

I’m an old frt too. I have Ping I500 from 6 iron on up. Got fitted. Love em. I have an old and a new Mizuon longer iron. The old is a 24 deg Fli Hi GFF looks like a driving iron. I like it som much that I went for a lower loft same club, but they don’t make a GFF now, so I got a Mizuno 18 degree MMC hybrid/util/driving iron/whatever. Not super easy to hit but I use it on tee for long par 3, and fairway. I have an ancient Adams A3OS red boxster “iron” hybrid, from around 2008. It is my true rescue from the junk, ivy, Oakmont rough (yea, right me at Oakmont). It was made with what was then cutting edge CNC milled maraging face. It is still in the bag. I can hit it off the tee over 200 yards. Don’t ask about driver tho. My curved spine does not handle shafts over 42 inches. I fight a vicious sway when I reach that long a shaft. Bottom line is find a hybrid that works for you. Give Mizuno a tryout if you can. It is hard to think of any metallurgy better than Mizuno.

herkyjerk said “and I beat them half the time”. Thats because you spend the other half of the time worrying what clubs they are using.
