Why Dustin Johnson loves his TaylorMade 7-wood

The 7-wood is back in style and it was the first club the World Number One hit in Thursday’s opening round at Riviera.

Dustin Johnson pulled his TaylorMade SIM Max 7-wood on the driveable par-4, and the club which he estimates that he carries 255-yards ended up rolling out 305-yards: “I hit it pretty much where I wanted to, it was just left of the green. It actually went a lot further than I thought” said Johnson.

The 21-degree club equipped with a Project X HZURDUS Black 95 6.5 shaft has been one of the reasons behind Johnson’s sharp ascent to the summit of the sport. After bagging the club at the PGA Championship back in August, DJ’s form has been otherworldly and reads T2-1-2-1-T6-T2-1-T11-1.

Speaking to Golf Channel following Thursday’s round, Johnson told the publication at Riviera why the club made its way into his bag and what it gives him that he can’t get from another fairway wood.

“I had a hybrid and then the 5-wood. A 5-wood and my 3-wood I hit like the same distance, so (TaylorMade) made me a 7-wood. When I first looked at it I’m like, I thought I was going to hit it straight in the air, but I hit it and it came out kind of nice and low with some spin. I was like, all right, put it in the bag.”

After putting the club in the bag, Johnson has earned over $20 million in prize money, and by the looks of his form since the PGA Championship, the club may be the secret ingredient behind the success.

    I am putting a PXG 7 wood in my bag for the 2021 season…..I may consider a project x shaft…..

    Hey, he has the same 7W as I do cept his is likely X shaft and tuned to perfection where mine’s a reg off the rack, but I use it a lot.

At GolfWRX, we believe the best hybrid for your game is going to be the one that gives you the greatest opportunity to both score and save shots during your round of golf.

In 2024, we have seen a continued expansion of hybrid options from every manufacturer with models designed to fit golfers of all skill levels and clubhead speeds. Some manufacturers offer models all the way down to 8-iron-replacement lofts.

That being said, ultimately the best way to find the best hybrid or hybrids for you is to work with a professional fitter using a launch monitor and gap them accordingly. The difficult part is a lot of people don’t have easy access to fitters, launch monitors, and club builders — so at GolfWRX, we have done a lot of the work for you.

We want to give you the tools and information to go out and find what works best for you, and we’re offering recommendations based on exactly what you need from your hybrids.

We have again broken our 2024 best hybrid list into two categories.

Most versatile hybrids of 2024

Titleist TSR2

“Forgiving speed and performance,” is the branding for the TSR2. TSR2 hybrids remain slightly longer with a classical shape. Center of gravity is lower and deeper in the TSR2 for higher launch and maximum forgiveness.

Ping G430

In all of the G430 fairway woods and hybrids, Ping developed Carbonfly Wrap in a bid to deliver more distance by positioning the CG closer to the face line in design to maximize ball speed, resulting in higher, longer carries. The lightweight composite crown wraps into the heel and toe sections of the skirt, creating weight savings of 10 grams, which are reallocated to achieve a lower CG and increase ball speed.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke
