The driver shaft that dominated the talk at Rory McIlroy’s Christmas dinner

Talk at Rory McIlroy’s Christmas dinner revolved around a driver shaft, but not just any driver shaft.

The shaft in question? Of course, it’s the $800 Korean AutoFlex shaft, which has been on the lips of all golf equipment junkies after Adam Scott became the first man to use the shaft in tournament play at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Speaking to media before this week’s WMPO, McIlroy revealed how his father was bending the 31-year-old’s ear over the shaft throughout his Christmas dinner.

“Don’t get me started about that shaft. All I heard about at Christmas dinner from my dad was this AutoFlex golf shaft. All I heard at Christmas dinner was my dad saying, ‘Can you get me one of these?’ Everyone is hitting it 20 yards longer. I swear, it’s all I heard about.”

McIlroy also told the media that he has tested one of the shafts but found it difficult to adjust to its unique characteristics. However, the Ulsterman was impressed with how Adam Scott performed with it last Sunday when the two played in the same grouping.

“I tried one of the members at Seminole’s, and I didn’t have the stiffest one, like the one that Adam (Scott) plays, but it just felt so — I felt if I swung hard I was going to break it. I felt like it was going to snap. But he definitely gained some speed with it. Adam was hitting it a long way on Sunday.”
