U.S Open Tour Truck Report: Tuesday

Published

on

Another busy day in the trucks (see yesterday’s report here) and the recurring theme is lots of fresh wedges, 7-woods, and hybrids to combat the nasty rough at Winged Foot.

Word on the street is the golf course is so tough that no amount of tinkering can really make a difference. It’s the U.S. Open at Winged Foot—you either showed up with it or it’s gonna be a long week. Not the time nor place to try and find it.

Callaway tour truck

  • Adam Hadwin put the new Prototype Apex MB21 in the bag (5-9) with Project X Rifle 7.0 shafts
  • Kevin Kisner switched into the Aldila Rogue Black 130 MSI 60 TX in his driver
  • Tom Lewis moved into the Mitsubishi Chemical D-Limited 60 TX in his driver
  • Erik van Rooyen put a Mavrik Sub Zero (tour only) 7 wood in play with an MCA Diamama DF 80 TX

Titleist tour truck

  • A general note: As expected, lots of hybrid and fairway wood testing for numerous players
  • Tyler Duncan put a TS2 21-degree hybrid in play to combat the rough
  • Ian Poulter put a TSi2 7-wood in the bag with the new Aldila Tour Green 85 TX shaft
  • Titleist will have at least 20 of the new TSi drivers in play

Ping tour truck

  • Matthias Schwab added a G410 7-wood to his arsenal with an Aldila Tour Blue ATX 85 TX shaft
  • Taylor Pendrith also put the G410 7-wood in play with a Project X Smoke Green 90 6.5 shat
  • Corey Conners had a fresh Glide Forged 60-degree wedge with a Project X 6.0 shaft
  • Joaquin Niemann settled on the G410 7-wood over a 3-iron for that 240 gap mentioned yesterday.

TaylorMade tour truck

  • Dustin Johnson is testing the new SIM DHY  (19 degrees) with a Project X HZURDUS Smoke Black Hybrid 100 6.5 shaft, hes getting a about 275 in the air with some spin and a mid flight which is great off the tee at Winged Foot.

That DHY is an absolute cannon. I hit it a couple weeks ago and it was butter smooth, very high launching and DEEP. Only drawback I found was it was literally too straight. Hard to work in either direction.

Has JT moved to the TSi3 with a different shaft? Seen a picture on Instagram, its clear he is using a TSi driver but cant make out the shaft, it looks blue in colour and different to the ZF….

Rickie Fowler’s new putter: Standard-length Odyssey Jailbird 380 in custom orange

Published

on

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. Head over there for the full article.

…The Jailbird craze hasn’t really slowed down in 2024, either. According to Odyssey rep Joe Toulon, there are about 18-20 Jailbird putter users on the PGA TOUR.

Most recently, Akshay Bhatia won the 2024 Valero Texas Open using a broomstick-style Odyssey Jailbird 380 putter and Webb Simpson is switching into a replica of that putter at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

Now, Fowler, who essentially started the whole Jailbird craze, is making a significant change to his putter setup.

Fowler, who has had a couple weeks off since the 2024 RBC Heritage, started experimenting with a new, custom-orange Jailbird 380 head that’s equipped with a standard 35-inch putter build, rather than his previous 38-inch counter-balanced setup.

According to Fowler, while he still likes the look and forgiveness of his Jailbird putter head, he’s looking to re-incorporate more feel into his hands during the putting stroke.

He told GolfWRX.com on Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Championship that the 38-inch counterbalanced setup “served its purpose” by helping him to neutralize his hands during the stroke, but now it’s time to try the standard-length putter with a standard-size SuperStroke Pistol Tour grip to help with his feel and speed control.

Although Fowler was also spotted testing standard-length mallets from L.A.B. Golf and Axis1 on Tuesday, he confirmed that the custom Odyssey Jailbird 380 is the putter he’ll use this week at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.
