Forum Thread of the Day: “What if Tiger is back?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from DJGainer, who asks fellow GolfWRX members what the effect will be should Tiger Woods go ahead and regularly win once again on the PGA Tour. Our members discuss both the possibility of Woods being able to achieve that and the impact that it would have on the game of golf.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to join the discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • the bishop: “If he wins he wins, and I think ratings will be good.  But as far as the same effect as back in the late 90’s early 00’s, no.  He was younger then, in his 20’s and younger kids relate to someone like that.  My oldest son, born in 1987, began playing golf partly because of Tiger and when we’d go to the range, he’d swing hard and say “I AM Tiger Woods” like one of his commercials from the time.  I don’t think he would inspire younger kids today like he did then.  He’s in his 40’s, and his oldest kid is a middle schooler now I think.  It’ll be great for his long time fans though.”
  • straightshot7: “It won’t transform the game because he already did that. But anytime he’s in contention there will obviously be very high ratings. If he’s in the final group of a major, you will probably see some TVs exploding from excessive rating syndrome.”
  • bazinky: “Plus, just imagine if Tiger is able to win a major and is playing well enough to have an actual rivalry that isn’t one-sided? You have the young-gun or guns versus a resurgent all-time champ adding to golf history. Just look at what happened at the Tour championship (which no one normally cares too much about). It would be absolutely explosive for golf!”
  • IVM: “Tiger winning 2 or 3 tournaments a year would be amazing, and if he won a major that would be incredible. Do not forget he is a middle-aged man with a fused back if he can do this that would be great for golf. He cannot dominate as he once did as his body would not stand up to the pressure. But the above would be good enough to move the needle in golf.”

Can we talk about this when he wins a full field event on a course he’s never won on?

So if he wins the Masters (again) can we talk about it or still no?

You missed the point genius. It won’t happen so let’s never talk about it again. Time for the Tiger bandwagon to disappear and go find their next cool thing so golf can find it’s sustainable market footprint.

How many GolfWRX gearheads are still playing traditional lofted irons? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing playing traditional lofted irons. WRXer ‘cardoustie’ has been playing a set down in Florida recently, and says:

“Playing with some i3 + blades down here in FL that I grabbed on a ‘can’t leave them alone in the store deal. 4-U. Extended them and tossed on iomics. Shafts were CS lite stiff with the cushion insert .. so 107g + 9g. I forgot how much I enjoyed the lighter PING steel shaft offerings with the insert (JZ and ZZ65 are other shafts I have loved in older Ping sets in the past. (I know, wrx man card to be turned in.)

I have to say, I am not hating playing off a 47* PW vs the 44 or 45 I am used to …. just accept the irons will go a little shorter. It’s just a number on the bottom after all…Does it matter at the end of the day if your 35* seven iron flies 165 vs hitting a modern 8 that far? I think many new 7 irons are under 30*. Anyone else in the same boat?”

And our members have been having their say in our forums.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • brew4eagle: “My set has a 47* P and a 35* 7iron. The gaps work well for me, and I have played these lofts so long now that I don’t want the mental exercise of ‘ok, this used to be a 7 iron, now is it the 8 iron or a throttled down 7 iron?'”
  • b.mattay: “I play Ping S56’s, so 47 degree PW and keep it traditional through to the 6 iron. I bent my 5 iron a bit strong (26.5 degrees) and then go into a i200 4 iron at 22.5 degrees. I like having 15-yard gaps throughout the wedges and irons.”
  • cgasucks: “All my gamer irons and the ones in my basement are all old and with “traditional” lofts (if you can say a 21 deg. 3 iron to a 48d PW traditional). My FG-17s and 1971 Wilson Button Backs are really old school lofts (which are 1 club weaker than traditional lofts).”
  • Skhacker: “I bend all my irons a couple degrees weak to get as close as I can to “traditional”, but some are so jacked (even players irons) that I still can’t always get there. I like seeing loft on my long irons.”

3-woods: Ping G425 vs Titleist TSi2 – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Ping’s latest 3-wood as well as Titleist’s TSi2. WRXer ‘Nick_E’ currently plays a TSi2 and is interested in hearing from folks who have played both. Our members dig into both clubs and which one they prefer more and why.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • dalillama47: “The Ping will be a little easier to elevate from the fairway, other than that I like the Titleist on every other account. Feel, sound, etc. If you have a 16.5* TSi, it may go as far as the Ping 14.5*, and be very easy to elevate from the fairway.”
  • buckl: “Watched a TXG video on the 425 release they were testing and Ian Fraser said the shafts are the real deal.”
  • realmfg: “I decided to order the Ping G425 fairways and hybrid over the TSi. From all the reviews it just seems the Pings are perfect looking with the matte black. Seem to be just a couple yards shorter than TSi but better dispersion. I have the TSi3 Driver, so I guess if I cant handle the ping sound Ill just sell and get the Titleist…”
  • Nick_E: “I hit the G425 max 3 wood today with av orange. Although the feel was really solid and was very forgiving it couldn’t beat out my TSi2 with av raw blue. Both are solid clubs but not worth changing. I do think the av raw blue shaft gives Titleist more advantage.”

David Feherty’s Golf Channel show axed – GolfWRXers react

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been reacting to the news that David Feherty’s Golf Channel show will end after a decade on air. Golf Digest reported the story, and speaking via telephone to the publication, Feherty said:

“I don’t know what the reasons were for the decision. I think it was a combination of things. We haven’t been able to shoot any episodes because of COVID. The Golf Channel move. I don’t know. Maybe it was just time.

I think a lot of people are going to be surprised that it got canceled. It always sort of amazed me the (number of) people that watched. Ten years is a whole lot more than I thought I would do. I loved doing it.”

Our members have been sharing their thoughts on the cancellation in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • bcflyguy1: “All good things must eventually come to an end, and when they do, it does nothing to diminish their goodness. As others have pointed out, there were some dud episodes, but they were only notable because of how exceptional most of the others were.”
  • bladehunter: “David is the very definition of genuine. Flawed. But genuine. And he has a natural knack for pulling the best out of people. Watch his Matthew McConaughey interview. If you don’t want to play a round with those two, it’s you. “
  • CCTxGolf: “Yeah, he certainly pulled the best out of people. Agree with Hawk on every point. For those who haven’t watched the Condi interview, do so. She is very, very impressive, to say the least.”
  • TobesSC: “Always enjoyed the show, but the amount of commercial breaks became unbearable to me. To make things worse the way they edited the sections going into breaks/coming out of breaks were all previews/summaries, so the 1 hour show turns out to be maybe 25 minutes max.”
