Forum Thread of the Day: “Who has the smoothest swing you’ve ever seen in person?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from Hankshank, as he asks fellow GolfWRX members what the smoothest swing they have seen live is. Plenty of players get a mention, and for different reasons, but for our members, Ernie Els and Fred Couples are quite dominant in this category.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Johnnypenso: “I saw Fred Couples at the Canadian Open back when he first came on tour.  His real swing looked more like his practice swing.  I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how he got such distance out of what looked like a slow and smooth swing.  Looks are deceiving I guess.”
  • playa: “Not a huge name golfer but John Senden has the most relaxed, rhythmic swing you would ever see. Like the Bruce Lee analogy of letting your body be water, Senden becomes the golf swing.”
  • 95124hacker: “Go to an LPGA event and watch petite young women drive the ball 250 effortlessly.”
  • 15th Club: “With all due respect, I think that anyone on this board now, who is barely old enough to have seen Sam Snead play at a time when he was not yet well into his sixties; that is the one, pure, shining example.”

Underrated, but, people always wanted to swing like him because he was very consistent, is Bruce Lietzke

Sam Snead. He could reach back and really bomb it and you didn’t see the effort. This all with older equipment. Players had to swing smooth to hit that smaller sweet spot. Thanks for putting up this question.

Take a look at Wild Bill Mehlhorn. Google . ““lLost Swings Biill Mehlhorn”. See Hogan’s quote about this player! All joints bent , relaxed. As they should be!

Seve Ballesteros could swing as smooth as anybody IMO.

Yeah because he wasn’t too concerned about where the swing directed the ball, he was more concerned about spraying it all over the map with that unique and strange action of his lol

What GolfWRXers are saying about Japanese brand Shimada iron shafts

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been sharing their thoughts on irons shafts from Japanese company Shimada. WRXer ‘Erchuccc’ is interested in the iron shafts and would like a comparison to his Modus 105’s, and our members have been having their say in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • BD14: “I’m currently gaming them on my CB301. I can’t compare them to the modus, but I get higher launch with them than my KBS Tour 90. Also, I normally play regular flex shafts (low swing speed), but I’m stiff in the Shimada Nine9. I find them very consistent for me.”
  • kcsf: “I’d had Shimada tour lites in the past and found them to be very smooth and consistent. I know that’s a different model than you’re asking, but I think you’ll really find them to be fantastic shafts.”
  • Vanbilxmchi: “I like Shimada NINE9; they feel very smooth; I think they are very similar to Oban CT. However, when I assembly them to my irons, it seems they have a bit smaller diameter to fit into 355 hosels. I have to use shim.”
  • chicolax2: “Great shaft company. I play different shafts, the tours, however, I highly recommend the quality of the shafts from Shimada.”

What GolfWRXers are saying about the most compact distance irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing compact distance irons. WRXer ‘msd71’ is on the hunt for new irons and says:

“Hitting 50 this year and thinking about moving to some players’ distance irons. I’m pretty much the last holdout among my group when it comes to traditional lofts, alternating between MP-63s and some Yonex blades.

Any suggestions as to which irons I should look at if my top 2 priorities (besides distance) are short heel-to-toe length and low offset?”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum, with TaylorMade’s P770’s proving very popular.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • 20six: “P770.”
  • Ripken08: Apex19s.”
  • Thinnedout: “Of the current offerings: Mavrik Pro, Apex 21 and Apex Pro 21. Depends how sleek you want to go.”
  • GHIN n Juice: “P770 were designed specifically for this purpose.”

The ‘knock down’ bag – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing a theory and strategy often employed by Phil Mickelson. WRXer ‘ExtraStiff’ kicks off the thread saying:

“In one of Phil Mickelson’s 2021 Masters interviews, he says he considers going game improvement irons around Augusta because high and spinny/attacking is usually the shot of choice. But he uses less forgiving clubs at a lot of other venues cause he is hitting ‘knock down shots’,… taking a couple of clubs extra, and taking some speed off it to keep trajectory and spin low so wind and such is less of a factor.

Anybody here playing two sets of irons for this reason, or have any thoughts? Are there any other pros that have suggested this philosophy?”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts on the strategy in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • jvincent: “Phil is the ultimate WRXer. That said, he actually has the skill to pull this off. I’d say there may be a handful of guys on here who actually have enough skill to do this kind of thing.”
  • acemandrake: “Ben Hogan said he always used more club on approach shots. That way, his swing never changed. He also liked to aim for the middle of the green.”
  • PEI_Golfer: “This just seems like Phil being Phil and overthinking something. He is talented enough that if he wanted to hit it higher, he would just hit it higher. It is almost like trying to give yourself an excuse for poor play with the clubs he is supposed to be the most comfortable with.”
  • cardoustie: “I have more success with smaller short irons (7-PW) … and I hit a load of knockdowns … it’s my preferred shot inside 155. I have 9 sets of irons right now but no full set of SG!”
